Due to being overly startled, Sun Meng took a long time to release the fear that had built up inside her in the classroom. Her sudden shout caused all her classmates to turn and look. The teacher also approached with concern, asking what was wrong. Ziya leaned closely against Sun Meng and whispered softly in her ear, "No matter what you saw, don't say anything to avoid unnecessary arguments."
"I... it's nothing. I just saw a spider, so I got scared," Sun Meng finally regained her composure. She released Ziya's comforting embrace, her pale Doll Face flushing with a hint of red as she stood up slowly to explain to the inquiring teacher.
"Come on, what's this? A spider scared you like this? You usually act so tough; is that just for show?" Sun Meng's explanation was both weak and helpless, provoking laughter from her classmates.
At the teacher's gesture, Sun Meng sat down, biting her lip as she listened to the teasing laughter of her peers. Tears quickly welled up in her eyes, and she suddenly stood up, catching Ziya off guard as she exclaimed loudly, "I saw a ghost! Right in the bathroom!"
Sun Meng's words were like a bomb dropped into the classroom, instantly silencing all sounds. Ziya was stunned, and the teacher was equally shocked; the classroom fell into an eerie silence.
"Mengmeng, are you okay?" After a long moment, Ziya managed to pull Sun Meng back down into her seat. The classroom remained quiet. It took the teacher a while to regain his composure; he cleared his throat and tapped his ruler sharply on the desk twice before saying, "Sun Meng, due to the incident last time, you're still not fully recovered. You need to take care of yourself; poor health can lead to hallucinations. Now, let's continue with the lesson."
The teacher's voice seemed to fade into the background for Sun Meng, who couldn't calm her racing thoughts. The gruesome image of blood and flesh lingered in her mind as she stared blankly at a spot in front of her. Ziya was captivated by her expression.
Neither Ziya nor Sun Meng knew what the lesson was about until the bell rang. The teacher glanced hurriedly at Sun Meng before shaking his head and gathering his materials as he left the classroom.
A few boys urged Zhiqing to join them outside for a soccer match against Class Two, but he declined and walked straight over to Ziya and Sun Meng instead. An Jian seemed like he still had something to say to him, but Zhiqing ignored him.
"Get out of here! I have things to do," Zhiqing said dismissively when he saw An Jian's timid demeanor. An Jian scratched his head helplessly and glanced at Ziya and Sun Meng before hesitantly leaving the classroom.
"Sun Meng, what did you see? Do you know what saying that in class could lead to?" Zhiqing asked with a hint of reproach in his tone.
"I saw a ghost," Sun Meng replied coldly. She pressed her thumbnail against the desk and began carving lines into it forcefully, leaving faint marks on the surface.
"Don't blame her just yet, let Sun Meng explain. Let's hear what she has to say," Ziya interrupted Sun Meng, noticing her fingernails were already digging into her palms. "Does it hurt? Don't be silly!"
"Go on! What did you see?" Zhiqing asked softly, easing his tone.
"I saw Ghost Baby... it was... so terrifying, a mass of blood..." Sun Meng stammered, a flicker of fear flashing in her eyes. Ziya quickly patted her back to comfort her.
"Weren't you the one who said you have a strong stomach? You want to be a doctor someday, so why are you scared? Come on, let's go take a look," Ziya said as she stood up and pulled Sun Meng along, addressing Zhiqing.
The three of them stepped out of the classroom, immediately engulfed by the noise of the campus. Various games and activities unfolded before their eyes. A group of boys and girls gathered around Huangguoshu, debating something animatedly. When one student spotted Ziya and the others, the crowd naturally parted.
It was clear they were discussing the ghost incident that Sun Meng had mentioned in class. Ignoring the curious glances from her classmates, Ziya guided Sun Meng towards the restroom.
To reach the restroom, they had to pass by Class Two. A few boys were pushing each other around on the old playground, and when they saw Zhiqing, Ziya, and Sun Meng, one of them stumbled out of the scuffle. It was An Jian, his messy hair even more disheveled than usual, a streak of blood at the corner of his mouth, and his face bruised as he ran towards them with his hands over his head.
"What the hell happened to you?" Zhiqing stopped in his tracks. An Jian was his deskmate, known for being timid and weak-willed, often at the bottom of their class rankings. The teachers had seated him next to diligent Zhiqing in hopes that he would be motivated to improve.
"They... they blamed me for not showing up yesterday for soccer practice. I promised I'd be there today for our match against Class Two, but since you didn't come..."
Ziya hurriedly handed him a tissue to wipe away the blood from his mouth. Originally listless, Sun Meng perked up upon seeing her classmate being bullied. She glared at the few boys from Class Two swaggering toward them, a hint of disdain escaping her nose as she wiped her arm across her short-sleeved shirt, adopting a stance as if ready to fight.
"Oh ho! A coward! No wonder you didn't show up today; turns out you were hiding between some girl's legs! Not bad looking!" sneered several boys from Class Two, clearly taller than all four of them. They were used to being brash and arrogant, spouting vulgarities as one reached out to touch Ziya's face.
"What do you want?" Before Zhiqing could respond, Sun Meng shouted loudly, shoving the boy's hand away and stepping forward with her chin raised defiantly, staring down at him despite their height difference.
"Hey! Tomboy, step aside. Men handle men's business. Damn coward, you’re not going to let the girls help you, are you?" A cocky guy crossed his arms and looked at Zhiqing with a mocking expression, raising an eyebrow.
"Damn it, watch your mouth! Who's the coward?" Zhiqing signaled Ziya and Sun Meng to leave, his eyes blazing with anger as he stepped forward and shouted at the group of boys without fear.
Ziya had never been in such a situation before; her heart raced in fear, and she trembled as she spoke to the boys from Class Two, "You can't bully us just because there are more of you! We haven't done anything to provoke you. Why are you picking on us?"
"Hey! Little girl, I'll give you a chance. If you agree to be my girlfriend, I'll pretend this never happened," Big Guy said as he stepped closer, reaching out to touch Ziya's face.
Sun Meng watched as Ziya stepped back in fright. Zhiqing's fist was grabbed by another boy from the group, but she charged forward and aimed for his foot, lifting her leg and stomping down without hesitation.
"Ouch!" The boy who had been bullying Ziya cried out in pain, hopping on one foot. At that moment, students from Seventh Grade Class rushed over. An Jian took the opportunity to grab Ziya and run, with Sun Meng quickly following behind, while Zhiqing also made a swift escape. What started as a minor incident became an excuse for the fallen boys from Class Two to seek revenge on Zhiqing and his friends, ultimately leading to serious trouble later on.
