In D City, there was a C County, which was home to a famous middle school. It wasn't renowned for its teaching or its school spirit, but rather for the legends surrounding it. It was said that this school was haunted... 0

The school's name was 'Sandalwood Temple.' Just the name alone was enough to evoke a sense of gloom. Why would a school be called a 'temple'? Was it really a place of worship? 0

Yes, you guessed it right; this school had once been a temple. At midnight, ghostly shadows would flit through the halls... accompanied by strange sounds... 0

Ziya and Sun Meng attended the same school and sat together in class. Their close friendship led many to mistakenly believe they were sisters, but they were not. Ziya was an adopted daughter of the Fang Family, while Sun Meng belonged to another family. 0

On a Sunday morning, Sun Meng arrived at school early because it was her turn to clean with Ziya. She thought that if she finished the cleaning quickly, they could go straight to their classroom for self-study when Ziya arrived. 0

Arriving so early, the school was nearly deserted except for two massive Huangguoshu trees at the entrance. The morning mist had not yet fully dissipated, and a light veil of mist enveloped the school. 0

As Sun Meng stepped into the school, her shoes crunched on the soft fallen leaves, creating a squeaking sound. The dense Huangguoshu trees shaded nearly half of the playground with their sprawling branches, blocking out sunlight from the classrooms. Even in summer, it felt cool here, as if autumn had already arrived. 0

At first, she didn't feel anything amiss at the entrance, but once inside, an inexplicable chill washed over her. Especially when she walked under those two enormous Huangguoshu trees, the sudden dimness made her feel unsafe. Instinctively, she tightened her grip on her backpack's straps and glanced around nervously. 0

There was no one in sight as she walked toward the rockery and entered a corridor lined with grapevines. At this time of year, fresh green shoots were sprouting, promising unripe fruit by summer. A small fountain sat among the rocks; it held no fish—only leaves from the Huangguoshu resting at the bottom and bits of litter carelessly tossed in. The corridor was empty except for the clear sound of water droplets from the fountain echoing in Sun Meng's ears. 0

With every step she took, Sun Meng felt as if an unseen cold gaze was watching her from somewhere nearby. A faint chill brushed against her neck as she passed through the corridor; she couldn't help but look back repeatedly, almost tripping over the stepping stones leading to her classroom. 0

After nearly stumbling, Sun Meng finally turned to face the classroom door. It was closed tight, with only a small sign indicating 'Seventh Grade Class Two' fluttering slightly in the breeze. 0

Oh no... The classroom door was still locked, and Ziya had the key. Why hadn't she arrived yet? But Sun Meng thought it best to set her backpack down first. Since she couldn't enter through the front door, perhaps she could climb in through the back window instead. 0

Sun Meng decided to take action, so she bypassed the narrow alley between Class Two of Seventh Grade and Class One of Grade One. Once inside, she found herself at the back window. 0

The back window was directly opposite the front door, allowing anyone standing there to see the front entrance clearly, and the entire classroom was laid out before her eyes. 0

As Sun Meng approached the back window and pulled it open, she froze. There was someone sitting in the classroom. Thinking her eyes were playing tricks on her, she rubbed them again and looked closely; the person remained still. The classroom door was wide open, and feeling frustrated, Sun Meng sighed to herself. She had no choice but to abandon her plan to climb in through the back window; if any classmates saw her doing that, she would surely be punished. 0

Feeling puzzled, Sun Meng recalled that she had just seen the classroom door closed and hadn’t noticed anyone entering. The more she thought about it, the stranger it seemed. She turned back to the window, wanting to see who that person in the classroom was. When Sun Meng peeked inside again, the classroom was empty... Where did they go? 0

Confused, Sun Meng leaned halfway into the classroom, trying to see if that classmate was looking at the bulletin board in the back. She scanned the entire room but didn’t see anyone. Retracting her gaze, her eyes fell on the classroom door... It was closed. This sight sent a chill down Sun Meng's spine; her ears buzzed, and her legs trembled as she crouched down, too scared to look inside again. 0

Sun Meng squatted by the back window for a long time, her heart racing uncontrollably. Ever since coming to this school, she had felt something was off but hadn’t seen anything concrete until now. The figure she had seen earlier could very well be one of those legendary ghosts rumored to haunt the school... With this thought in mind, Sun Meng pulled out her phone to call Ziya. 0

She turned on her phone and quickly dialed Ziya’s number... After a long wait, all she heard was static and what sounded like electrical noise. Cursing under her breath, she urged Ziya, “Come on, pick up my call!” 0

Holding the phone to her ear, she heard a click as if Ziya was playing with her phone. She shouted into the receiver, “Ziya! What are you doing not answering my call?” 0

There was silence on the other end for a while before a deep voice replied, “I’m playing hide and seek with you…” 0

Sun Meng immediately recognized that it wasn’t Ziya’s voice but a sharp female voice that sent chills down her spine. Startled, she quickly hung up and wondered if she had dialed the wrong number or reached someone else. 0

Just as Sun Meng was about to check her phone again, it rang loudly. She answered it only to find an unfamiliar number on the screen. Curious yet apprehensive, she picked up... 0

“Playing hide and seek...” 0

"Damn it, damn it, who... get the hell out of here, you scared the life out of me... sweat..." Sun Meng trembled all over upon hearing the voice from inside, cursing under her breath. Her hands shook as she turned off her phone, no longer wanting to make a call. 0

Sun Meng remained crouched by the back window of the classroom until she heard voices inside. Only then did she quietly rise to take a look. Confirming that Ziya and other classmates had arrived, she stepped out from the alleyway. 0

"Hey! You..." Ziya was erasing the blackboard with an eraser in hand, her eyes filled with reproach that made Sun Meng feel quite wronged. 0
