As the soothing light music initiated by Sun Meng echoed in the twenty-square-meter room, her communication and collaboration with Ziya deepened. When she asked, "Are you at the entrance of the Daily News Building now?"
Ziya's previously serene smile vanished like a fleeting shadow, replaced by tightly furrowed brows and beads of sweat forming on her forehead and nose. Her body began to tremble slightly, which made Sun Meng suddenly feel anxious. Forgetting Liang Chao's earlier warnings, she hurriedly grasped Ziya's trembling hand as an eerie chill enveloped her, pulling Sun Meng into a mysterious environment.
Since childhood, Sun Meng possessed a perception that others lacked, allowing her to see things that should remain unseen. She had tried hard not to think about it, and her daily laughter seemed to help her forget this taboo ability. Now, as she gazed at the surreal scene before her, she desperately wanted to grasp something but felt utterly weak and powerless.
Before her appeared a dimly lit corridor, deep and shadowy, with little light. At the end of the corridor stood a solitary figure, seemingly lost and unsure of where to go. That silhouette looked familiar.
"Ziya, is that you?" Her voice echoed in the corridor, mingling with a chilling breeze that swept over her. A shiver ran through her body as she hugged herself tightly against the cold.
The figure at the end of the corridor slowly turned to look at Sun Meng. With a pale face and helpless eyes, it was none other than Ziya. Not daring to push open the door, Sun Meng glanced around; all she could see was more corridor stretching endlessly like a series of desolate valleys, filling her with despair and hopelessness.
Suddenly, sounds began to echo through the corridor—heavy scraping against the floor, low growls, and some piercing noises that grated on her nerves. It felt as if many things were crawling toward them from the ground. Ziya turned back in terror repeatedly, each glance eliciting a stifled scream.
"Hush," Sun Meng whispered, raising her finger to silence Ziya as she pulled her beside a protruding pillar, peering toward the source of the noise. Gradually adjusting to the dim light, she could indeed see something crawling along the floor. Beside these crawling entities lay a man... a strange living man... Sun Meng strained to see his face clearly but could only make out its outline in the darkness.
"Sun Meng! Ziya! Wake up! The sky..." Suddenly, they heard someone calling their names from somewhere nearby. They looked up and saw that the entire area was nearly devoid of light.
"Who is calling us?" Ziya's pale face appeared even more ghostly in the dark. Sun Meng held her tightly; at that moment, she realized the mistake she had made.
The crawling things drew closer; they could smell blood in the air. Were these corpses? As this thought reached her brain, an instinctive command to 'run' surged through them simultaneously. They fixed their sights on one direction where a faint white light glimmered ahead; Ziya and Sun Meng resolutely ran toward it.
Sun Meng suddenly opened her eyes; she was still holding Ziya's hand tightly—both their palms were sweaty. Liang Chao stood nearby, drenched in sweat and anxiously watching them. As Ziya slowly opened her eyes, tears sparkled within them as she gripped Sun Meng's hand even tighter.
"Didn't I tell you that hypnosis has its risks? Look at you, you big oaf! You actually forgot my warning," Liang Chao scolded loudly as he blew out the white candle and set it aside.
Sun Meng understood what had just happened. She held Ziya's hand, unknowingly allowing her fear to lead her consciousness into a nonexistent illusion. It was merely a figment lingering in her mind, gradually forming into a tangible energy. However, if they didn't escape that illusion in time, she and Ziya would end up like those who had fallen into eternal sleep, never to awaken again. Just moments ago, Liang Chao had lit a white candle beside them, letting its light penetrate their consciousness, creating a white halo. Jumping out of that halo meant breaking free from the endless illusion.
"It’s all my fault for being careless; I almost lost Ziya," Sun Meng said, her voice trembling with lingering fear. Yet the image of that man remained firmly etched in her mind.
"You can't blame Sun Meng. If she hadn't shown up, I... I wouldn't know what to do," Ziya replied, taking the cool water Liang Chao handed her and sipping it casually before wiping her mouth with the back of her hand in surprise.
"Alright, maybe it was just a twist of fate! Since we managed to pull you out of that simulated world, we should really celebrate. How about we go to Old Granny's for some canned tofu?" Liang Chao suggested, noticing Sun Meng moving her lips as if to say something. He quickly diverted the conversation because Ziya had just emerged from the illusion and shouldn't hear anything about it yet. Watching the fragrant canned tofu made Ziya's appetite surge; she eagerly devoured the steaming hot dish, swallowing slices of tofu as thin as tender bamboo shoots. Liang Chao and Sun Meng clinked their beer bottles together and tilted their heads back to drink until their bottles were upside down.
"So, I want to move back to school, but Sun Meng has to come with me," Ziya declared assertively to both of them.
"On what grounds? You have no good intentions; you're trying to pull me away from him! What are you up to?" Sun Meng joked playfully, her cheeks flushed with drunkenness.
"Haha! Look at you! Ziya, don’t mind her; if you want to move back to school, just do it! No worries; I can handle the loneliness," Liang Chao said with a smile as he picked up a piece of tofu and popped it into his mouth.
