"Hey, what are you two doing?" Ziya asked with a smile as she noticed Sun Meng talking to a man who had his back turned to her.
"You're out? We were just discussing you, our self-important, super cool ice beauty," Sun Meng said, turning around with a grin that lit up her face. The man also turned to look at Ziya, and she was taken aback, her eyebrows slightly raised in surprise.
"Zhou Chen? You..." Ziya froze, realizing that the boyfriend Sun Meng mentioned was none other than Zhou Chen, who had ignored her countless calls.
Zhou Chen flashed a charming smile, his handsome nose accentuating his playful demeanor. "Ziya, how have you been lately?"
"Good... pretty good," Ziya replied with a bitter smile, trying to make small talk. However, she felt like she was holding a hot potato; seeing him, who once adored her deeply, now with her childhood friend stirred up a whirlwind of emotions within her.
Sun Meng was quick to pick up on Ziya's melancholy expression. Determined to lighten the mood, she exuded an energy that seemed tireless. Ziya couldn't help but feel envious of her friend's simplicity and authenticity. While she possessed beauty, she often wore a cold expression towards everyone. It was surprising that Zhou Chen had chosen Sun Meng; perhaps this was fate. Her relentless pursuit of perfection had become her greatest weakness.
"Ziya, take a day off from the News Agency; we're going to grandpa's house," Zhou Chen said directly, unaware of Ziya's inner turmoil.
"What are you two planning?" Ziya asked, confused.
"Let Zhou Chen explain it to you! I'm not too clear on the details myself," Sun Meng said, deliberately avoiding Ziya's questioning gaze and redirecting it toward Zhou Chen.
"I can handle my own affairs; I don't need your help," Ziya replied coldly.
"Are you upset, Ziya? We're friends! Helping you is the least we can do," Sun Meng said, wanting to explain but fearing that further explanations would complicate things even more.
"No matter where you want to take me, I still need to ask for leave!" Ziya shot them both an icy glance before walking towards the glass partition door of the inner hall. Her expression left both of them bewildered; in her mind, she mistook Liang Chao for Zhou Chen. But how could Sun Meng and Liang Chao know what was going on in her head?
Liang Chao watched Ziya's retreating figure and whispered to Sun Meng, "Can this really help her? We're lying like this! I feel uneasy about it..."
Sun Meng forced a smile, his expression oddly mismatched with his face shape, and said seriously, "We're all her good friends, so we have to help her. I only found out yesterday that Anqing Mama is really worried. If she keeps getting stuck in this situation, something bad will happen sooner or later..." As they spoke, both noticed Ziya pushing open the glass door and running out.
The three of them stepped out of the building amidst Sun Meng's playful antics. Liang Chao was also a university student, coincidentally studying medicine just like Sun Meng, and they had been assigned to the same hospital for their internship. It was worth mentioning that Liang Chao had once pursued Ziya fervently but had given up on the idea of marrying her after being repeatedly rejected by someone.
They stood by the bus stop, eagerly waiting for the bus to Tonghuimen Bus Station, where Zhou Chen's grandfather lived behind the station in the Yixin Garden residential area.
Liu Haoming hurriedly rushed with Zi Anqing towards the traffic police headquarters. Upon arriving, just as they were backing up, Yuan Ye also showed up. To ease the tension between them, they nodded at each other in greeting. Entering the traffic police office, they inquired about the cause of yesterday's car accident.
The investigator checked their documents and succinctly explained the situation: "The involved party ran a red light, which led to a dump truck coming from the right crashing directly into his small car, resulting in his immediate death. Their bodies are at the funeral home, but related items will have to wait until the family comes to collect them."
"What kind of items does he have? Can we take a look?" Liu Haoming felt a shiver run through him as he listened; it seemed inevitable that something would happen to that reckless individual. He recalled how harshly he had spoken to Nana before; it turned out that old saying about beautiful women bringing disaster was true. With such seductive secretaries around, who knew how many people would fall into their traps? Thinking further, men weren't necessarily innocent either—having a wife and kids while still chasing after flashy things would eventually lead to trouble. Now he had left his family behind forever to play with a beautiful secretary in the afterlife.
"Just a mobile phone and some bank cards and identification documents..." As he spoke, a commotion of noise and cries came from the entrance, prompting Liu Haoming to lean forward to see.
"Sister-in-law..." A woman entered; her haggard face was pale and lifeless, tears welling in her eyes as she nodded at Liu Haoming and the others before sorrowfully taking a seat on one of the chairs provided by the traffic police.
After confirming various items and signing paperwork, they all exited the traffic police office in silence, each feeling a heavy weight in their hearts.
"Sister-in-law... may I take a look at Zhang Maocai's phone?" Liu Haoming asked, stopping in his tracks with a questioning tone.
"Um," the sorrowful woman replied with a hard swallow, immediately pulling out the phone from her bag and handing it to Liu Haoming. Zi Anqing embraced the grieving woman, gently comforting her, continuously pulling tissues from his pocket to offer her as tears streamed down her face.
"Is there a problem?" Yuan Ye noticed Liu Haoming examining the phone and suddenly furrowed his brow, quickly leaning forward to ask.
"Look, this message was sent at 9:50. It has the tone of a woman. Who sent it?" Liu Haoming murmured softly, looking at Yuan Ye's serious expression as he spoke.
"Could it be that Zhang Maocai has another woman..." Yuan Ye regretted saying this as soon as the words left his mouth. The sorrowful woman was still weeping for her lost husband, and now with his comment about another woman, she began to cry even harder.
...
The three of them arrived at the Tonghui Gate bus station and found the Yixin Garden residential area. Liang Chao had been here before and knew Zhou Chen's address without needing to ask; it was Unit 3, Building 4, Apartment 6 in Area A.
"Knock, knock," Liang Chao gently tapped on the door. After a moment, it seemed as if a pair of eyes peered through the peephole at the three outside, followed by the sound of a lock sliding open.
"Who are you...?" an elderly man resembling a scholar asked as he opened the door.
"Hello, Grandpa. We came to see you."
