The knocking at the door, "bang, bang," jolted Ziya awake from her nightmare. Suddenly alert and drenched in cold sweat, she initially thought it was just her imagination. However, as she listened closely, it became clear that someone was indeed knocking at the door.
“Ziya, open the door. You had another nightmare, didn’t you?” It was Anqing Mama’s voice. She had just settled down when she heard her husband banging on their daughter's door, prompting her to roll over and get up again. Her body felt achy and weak; what on earth was going on tonight? After several attempts to get up, she wondered if anyone would ever let her sleep.
Ziya felt a chill run down her spine as she saw her father Liu Haoming’s stern face, his gaze fixed intently on her. She sensed that something must be wrong; in her past experiences, such a look from her father always indicated trouble.
“Just now, Yuan Ye said that Zhang, the Chief Editor had a car accident. I just received the call. Ziya had a nightmare…”
“What? No way! Didn’t you just talk to him and he seemed fine?” Zi Anqing exclaimed in disbelief. Ziya also found the situation suspicious. She scanned her parents' faces without saying a word or expressing any other emotions. Slowly, she lowered her head and began to close the door to her room.
“Ziya, wait a moment.” Her mother rushed into their master bedroom and quickly returned with Ziya’s personal sachet. “This is something your father and I prepared for you when we came to pick you up, but it slipped my mind in the chaos earlier. Here, put it on.”
“Medicine can be harmful; how can you not take it? Alright, go to sleep! I’ll visit the traffic police station tomorrow to check on an old friend.”
“Sigh, what a troublesome time.” The two of them turned off the bedside lamp and lay down…
……………………The next day
When Ziya woke up, it seemed her parents were still asleep. After a quick wash-up as usual, she heated some milk in the kitchen and ate an egg before leaving a note for her parents that she was heading to work. As she stepped into the elevator, a silent shadow suddenly appeared, startling her; upon closer inspection, it was Zhou Chen.
“You…” Ziya exclaimed in surprise. The anticipation that had built up day and night now met in a silent gaze. Who could understand the depths of each other's eyes? Who could see through the sorrows and pains of this world? Who knew the loneliness and desolation of being worlds apart?
"I'll tell you, before the incident, I received a strange message on my phone..." Zhou Chen's cold tone maintained a certain distance from the other person. Just as he was about to say something crucial, the elevator stopped at the eighth floor, and a little elementary school student with a backpack walked in.
This student, Ziya recognized, was Wang Can from Building B on the eighth floor, a cute little boy. He held a box of milk in one hand and had a straw in his mouth. He pulled out the straw and smiled at her, saying, "Wow! I ran into Sister Ziya again!"
"Wang Can, you should be in fourth grade now! How are your grades?" Ziya particularly liked this child, but unfortunately, he suffered from a rare blood disease and was one of only five patients in the country.
"Yeah! Where are you going, Sister?" Wang Can blinked his big eyes and asked, staring at Ziya's back.
"I'm going to work! I'm in my internship period!"
"Okay," the elevator stopped, and Ziya and Wang Can stepped out. The elderly residents of the community were stretching their arms and legs as they walked around. Wang Can tossed his empty milk box into the trash can and flashed her a big grin showing his two front teeth.
Ziya was still thinking about what Zhou Chen had said earlier and wanted to deliberately slow down to create some distance from Wang Can when her phone suddenly rang. She muttered under her breath, "Could it be that Mom and Dad are awake?" Upon checking, she realized it was Sun Meng calling. She waved apologetically at Wang Can, signaling him to go ahead while she answered the call.
As she pressed the answer button, Sun Meng's cheerful voice came through like a high-pitched speaker: "Hey! I think you've forgotten about me, right? You didn't even bother to call me; I had to call you myself!" At that moment, Ziya could picture Sun Meng chewing on bubble gum while walking around making the call.
"Aren't you busy? You don't care about me anymore; you must be interning at the hospital!" Ziya casually glanced at the hurried people passing by as they headed toward the community entrance.
"What are you busy with? Let me tell you, once I start my internship at the hospital, I'm definitely dragging you along! I just heard some bad news—apparently your Chief Editor Zhang from News Agency got into an accident. Is that true? Tell me what happened."
"Come on, stop it! Why would a medical student be interested in that kind of thing? If there's nothing else, I'm hanging up!"
"Don't hang up! Are you throwing a tantrum like a spoiled princess? Haven't you met any handsome guys at News Agency? If you have, introduce one to me!" Sun Meng was really quite nosy. Ugh! Frustrated, Ziya ended the call and ignored Sun Meng's subsequent attempts to reach her. It seemed like her phone was deliberately acting against her; the more she ignored it, the louder it rang.
Ziya picked up the phone, her temper flaring as she shouted, "Sun Meng, you are really annoying!" To her surprise, the other end went silent and then hung up.
"What is this all about?" Ziya muttered as she walked to the bus stop by the road. The bus hadn't arrived yet, and she was puzzled by Sun Meng's call that ended abruptly. Feeling irritated, she checked the incoming call from Sun Meng. To her shock, it was a completely unfamiliar number. As the saying goes, when you know you're in the wrong, it leaves a sour feeling inside.
Ziya dialed the number back. After a pleasant ringtone played, a dull voice answered, "Hello." She quickly covered her left ear and stepped behind a signpost.
"Hi, I was just joking with a classmate earlier. When I saw your call, I thought it was my friend, so I—"
"It's okay. I'm the new assistant assigned to you by the school. I just wanted to get in touch, but I didn't expect you to curse right after picking up." The voice belonged to a senior! Ziya felt a wave of embarrassment wash over her. However, she needed to put a stop to this adventurous guy wanting to be her assistant; she wasn't clear about the situation in front of the building and couldn't involve more people.
"Uh... well, I don't need an assistant right now. I can handle things on my own... you see..." Her implication was clear: there was no need for him to come; she could manage everything perfectly fine on her own.
