Watching the furious Liu Minghao, Yuan Ye felt a sense of grievance. However, thinking about Zi Anqing and Fang Ziya still being in the building, along with that unknown entity attached to Lao Ran, filled him with both fear and dread.
Recalling the chilling sensation that coursed through him when Lao Ran held his hand, and the inhuman gaze directed at him, Yuan Ye realized that even a strong man like himself could hardly withstand it, let alone two vulnerable women.
Yuan Ye contemplated for a moment before saying to Liu Minghao, "Minghao, don't panic. You don't understand the situation inside. I'll go in and take a look." He turned to Liu and Liu, instructing them, "You two stay here with Minghao. I'll go find Ziya. Security, you come with me."
The security guard had heard rumors about unclean things in the building. Reluctantly, he replied to Yuan Ye, "Yuan, this isn't part of my job. To put it bluntly, I'm just here to watch the door. As long as the door is here and hasn't been taken away, my job is done. Accompanying you to look for someone at this hour isn't part of my duties."
Yuan Ye felt a surge of anger. First, he was scolded by Liu Minghao, and now he was being dismissed by this security guard whom he deemed insignificant. Frustrated, he snapped back, "Hand over your baton and flashlight. If you don't want to work anymore, pack your things and leave tomorrow."
The security guard handed over his baton and a powerful flashlight with a smirk. "You're a big shot; there's no need to get angry over us little people. If I can't serve you well, then I won't serve you at all. This security job can be done anywhere; it's just watching a door after all. You go enjoy yourself inside; I won't bother you tonight."
True to his word, the security guard left without another word and hopped onto his electric bike.
"You still need to complete your resignation procedures!" Liu Haoming said in a calm tone, his sharp gaze fixed on the guard.
The guard paused in surprise, sulking as he parked his bike aside and trudged back into the Guard Room, watching Yuan Ye and Liu Haoming's every move from the window.
Thinking back to their earlier brush with death, although Liu no longer had the Jade in hand, he couldn't shake off the feeling of guilt for letting Yuan Ye go in alone. So he said, "Yuan, how about I accompany you inside?"
Yuan Ye maintained a stoic expression as he grasped the flashlight and baton tightly while walking toward the rolling shutter door. He replied as he walked, "Stay here with Liu and Minghao; I'll go in alone for a look."
As night fell, all the main lights in the building were turned off, leaving only a few low-wattage energy-saving lights flickering dimly. The meager illumination was so weak that even standing directly beneath it made it difficult to read the small print on a newspaper. Yuan Ye gripped the baton tightly in one hand while holding the flashlight in the other; every muscle in his body was tense to such an extent that even moving slowly required considerable effort.
As Yuan Ye took a few steps, he suddenly felt an inexplicable cold breeze blowing from behind his neck. It was as if someone had deliberately aimed a fan at him, and the unexpected chill sent a shiver down his spine, prompting him to turn around. At the entrance stood the same few people, seemingly far away, making it impossible for anyone to blow such a strong gust of wind at him.
The more Yuan Ye thought about it, the stranger it seemed. He turned and walked towards the hall, noticing two indistinct figures ahead that caught his attention. When had those two people passed by him? There were others at the entrance; surely the security guard must have seen them. But looking at their backs, wasn't that his old friend Zhang, the Chief Editor?
With this thought in mind, Yuan Ye quickened his pace, trying to catch up with the two who had already entered the hall. He called out as he ran, "Hey! You two, what are you doing? Liu Haoming is still waiting for you at the door..."
Yuan Ye's shout startled Liu Haoming, who was anxiously waiting at the entrance. However, since he was facing away, he might not have heard clearly what Yuan Ye said. He merely turned his head slightly to glance before continuing to watch for Zhang's return. His brows furrowed even tighter as the security guard let Liu into the Guard Room. The little chubby girl from the News Agency's medical room wouldn’t be back until tomorrow; they would have to wait for Zhang to return before deciding what to do.
Yuan Ye rushed into the hall but had not finished his sentence when he realized that those two people were moving quite fast. The hall was illuminated by bright white lights and featured a green potted plant quietly leaning against the wall—there was no one else around. Just then, he heard rustling footsteps and faint voices coming from somewhere. Because of what had just happened, he felt a bit uneasy and wondered where Ziya was now.
His mind raced with strange thoughts as he followed the sounds toward a corner. Fang Ziya and Anqing Mama appeared around the bend, both surprised to see him.
"Ziya, Anqing... you..." The moment Yuan Ye saw Anqing, he suddenly became tongue-tied.
"Yuan, are you okay?" Ziya asked, relieved to see him unharmed. But her expression turned puzzled as she wondered why Zhou Chen hadn’t been seen; her calls went unanswered, and Anqing Mama seemed to deliberately avoid discussing him.
"I'm fine. Thank you for worrying about us and coming back to find us; you're such a good girl."
"Everything's fine; just go outside! Ugh, after all this fuss, my back is killing me..." Anqing said with an unnatural expression. She took Ziya by the hand and walked past Yuan Ye, who stood there somewhat dazed as he looked at the shadows in the corridor and the lights on the board. He felt something was off but couldn't pinpoint what it was.
"Um... when you came out just now, did you see anyone go in here?" Yuan Ye still felt uneasy and hurriedly called out to stop the two women heading toward the door.
Anqing paused for a moment but didn’t turn around as she replied, "Didn’t see anyone. You didn’t even let us know when you came out; my daughter and I were stuck inside messing around for no reason. We’re hungry; we need to go home." Her cold voice carried an undertone of past grievances as she pulled Ziya along toward the entrance while glancing back at Yuan Ye repeatedly.
"Anqing, how could you do this? Maybe they just came from somewhere else, and we missed them!" Ziya felt a bit guilty about Anqing's treatment of Yuan.
"Even so, he should at least make a call! Isn't this just tormenting people? From now on, don't be so stubborn; you have to do what you want. Look at how I've spoiled you," Anqing grumbled irritably. This made her daughter, Fang Ziya, feel that her mother's youth was long gone, and the unfortunate onset of menopause was gradually settling in. Upon reflection, she naturally dared not speak up and let her ramble for a while; it wasn't a big deal.
Ziya and Anqing walked ahead while Yuan Ye hesitated for a moment before following them to the door. Liu Haoming aggressively stubbed out his cigarette on the ground and walked over to open the car door when he saw his wife and daughter come out. The three of them got back into the car, which emitted a plume of brown smoke as the red taillights flickered and disappeared from Yuan Ye's sight. He turned back to glance at the Specter building, a chill suddenly rising from his feet.
