Ding Li told Ye Chenfeng that she had just dozed off when she received a strange phone call. The caller seemed to be a woman who simply asked a question and then fell silent.
Hearing her mention the call, Ye Chenfeng picked up his phone to check.
He wondered if it was that person calling. When he looked at the caller ID, it turned out to be Li Xin.
Ye Chenfeng was worried that Ding Li might overthink things, as he rarely had female friends' numbers saved on his phone.
Even if he did have female friends, they were women who needed his help, and there was no romantic involvement.
Li Xin was the exception.
What exactly did Li Xin want? She seemed to be stalking him, appearing like a ghost in his life and trying to disrupt his normal relationship with Ding Li.
"It's nothing, just a strange call. Let's not worry about it," Ye Chenfeng said as he deleted the number and added it to his blacklist.
After taking a moment to rest, his expression improved slightly. He noticed Ding Li's furrowed brow, which stemmed from his temporary cooperation with local authorities in investigating the case of missing children presumed dead, preventing him from returning to Purple City.
He comforted her, saying, "Don't worry; I'm not a suspect. I'm just helping them with their investigation."
"What can you tell them? That you're a Yin-Yang Master who can communicate with the underworld and summon Yin Chai? Or that you just wanted to take a look inside that room without any ulterior motives?" Ding Li's tears flowed uncontrollably.
Sigh! Women really do love to cry.
Ye Chenfeng went to get some tissues to wipe away her tears and said, "Let's go for a walk."
The scenery in the mountain village was quite nice. Although it couldn't compare to the artificially created floral wonderlands of big cities, it was filled with birdsong and fragrant flowers, abundant with natural beauty. Taking a deep breath filled his lungs with the scent of earth. The children played under the watchful eyes of adults, their playful antics now restrained; they no longer had the carefree space that belonged solely to their innocent play.
Damn those twisted child-murdering perverts.
Ye Chenfeng let out a frustrated sigh as his phone rang unexpectedly again. He picked it up and saw a particularly unfamiliar number.
As he answered the call, Ding Li stared at him intently.
"I don't know who it is, just hang up."
"Answer it; what if it's something urgent?"
To be honest, Ding Li had changed a lot lately.
She was more tolerant now, no longer the petty woman she used to be. She had come to terms with the fact that if a man wanted to go astray, even if he was tied down with a rope around his waist, he would still find a way. Ye Chenfeng's character was something she believed in; even if he went bad, it wouldn't be too severe.
Ye Chenfeng thought Ding Li made a valid point and decided to answer the call. However, upon hearing the voice on the other end, his expression changed. He cautiously glanced at Ding Li and stepped aside.
"What did you say?"
"Block me, if you don't want to know who I am. Go ahead and try blocking me."
The caller was Li Xin.
"What do you want?"
Li Xin let out a cold laugh that sent a chill down Ye Chenfeng's spine. He continued to listen as she spoke. "Haven't you been looking for the White-Clad Woman? I can help you."
"Just based on you?" Ye Chenfeng felt this was one of Li Xin's tricks, aimed at ensnaring him.
"Don't forget about Xiang'er."
Xiang'er was the pain in Ye Chenfeng's heart.
He had not forgotten the first time Xiang'er appeared before him, nor had he forgotten the promise he made to protect her: "What do you want? Xiang'er has no grievances with you."
"I don't want anything. If you care about Xiang'er, come to me quickly."
Ye Chenfeng could not see Li Xin's true face at that moment, but he could hear the ferocity in her words, as if they were squeezed out from between clenched teeth.
"Not now. I have things to take care of and can't come back."
"Suit yourself. If you're willing to sacrifice Xiang'er, then go ahead and try!"
"Li Xin, don't go too far."
"Hahaha, too far? Ye Chenfeng, do you want to know the fate of the Fourth Daughter? You once felt the anger deep within her; don't you have even a shred of compassion?"
"That story? The Fourth Daughter is you!"
Li Xin fell silent.
Ye Chenfeng called out several times, thinking Li Xin had hung up.
After a moment, her voice came through: "It can be said that way, or it can be not." Her tone was cold, as if it came from the depths of hell.
"What happened to the Fourth Daughter in the end?"
"She died..."
Ye Chenfeng trembled all over. "How did she die?"
"Hahaha, are you worried about her? Do you care for her, or is it because after entering the story, you feel that the Fourth Daughter is your past life?"
What exactly was Li Xin's background? She could make herself enter the story and play one of the most tragic roles, something ordinary people could never achieve. It seemed that Li Xin was indeed extraordinary.
"Yes, I am very concerned about her future. It's human nature, you understand?"
"She grew up in a world filled with hatred. What kind of outcome do you think she will have?"
Ye Chenfeng remained silent, his heart heavy, as if a large stone had fallen into it, dragging it down deeper and deeper—
"She thought that once she grew up, she would have a good life. Who knew that the first man she encountered after growing up would sleep with her and then leave her pregnant without a word? She was an unwed mother. How could the Tiger Mom allow such disgrace to be exposed in broad daylight? Her stick played a significant role at this moment."
As Ye Chenfeng listened to Li Xin's narration, it felt as if he had returned to the story, still playing that tragic role.
His belly protruded, as if he were four or five months along.
The Tiger Mom's stick struck the Fourth Daughter again and again. The poor Fourth Daughter curled up, protecting her head and abdomen, covered in bruises. Finally, the Tiger Mom grew tired and stopped swinging the stick, binding the Fourth Daughter with a rope.
Night fell.
In the long night, the Fourth Daughter curled up on the ground. Her pleading voice grew fainter and fainter; no one paid attention to her or to the child within her.
Blood stained her clothes.
She lay on the cold ground, barely alive, witnessing a new life extinguish before her eyes.
She crawled up, dragging the severed umbilical cord of the stillborn child, making her way toward the bedroom door of Tiger Mom.
Blood spread out, making it unclear whether the blood had stained the floor or if the floor had turned dark from the blood.
The Fourth Daughter began to hate children, to hate everyone.
Humans are strange creatures.
Born as a tiny, innocent being, crying out in the world. As they grow a little older, they reveal a harmless smile like livestock, and when they mature and have children, they become like Tiger Mom.
Thus, children are the most detestable; no one doubts what this child will become when they grow up.
Children are innocent and pure; no one can predict what they will turn into as they grow older.
The Fourth Daughter grasped the scissors and cut the umbilical cord—
"It was you; you are the White-Clad Woman."
"Hahaha, do you know the story of the Ghostly Mother?" Li Xin's voice turned eerie as she spoke each word deliberately: "Ghostly Mother, a pitiful woman abandoned by the world, vowed to consume all the children in the city because they are the root of all evil. Only by devouring them can humanity be spared from turning into a hell on earth."
"You madwoman! Are the bones in this house what you left after eating? Where is Xiang'er?" Ye Chenfeng trembled with rage, his face contorting into a frightening expression.
Ding Li asked, "Ye Chenfeng, what's wrong?"
Ye Chenfeng covered the microphone and gestured to Ding Li. He suspected that Li Xin was nearby and urged Ding Li to call the police.
Ding Li called the police.
Ye Chenfeng continued to engage with Li Xin.
The relevant authorities acted swiftly.
After a thorough search around the rented house of Ye Chenfeng, a woman dressed entirely in white suddenly appeared at the mountaintop.
"That's her."
The villagers recognized her.
The White-Clad Woman vanished in an instant.
"Ghostly Mother?" Ding Li exclaimed.
Ye Chenfeng scoffed, "She is not the Ghostly Mother. She is a vengeful spirit, deeply attached and unwilling to die. Due to her cultivation level, it caused me to mistake her for the Fourth Daughter's lingering soul. Now she has become an evil spirit, branding herself as part of the Ghostly Mother incident, but in reality, she is nothing."
Ye Chenfeng strode purposefully toward the spot where the White-Clad Woman had disappeared. His steps were steady, his resolve unwavering, and the Ghost-Collecting Gourd in his hand emitted a resonant sound, its righteous aura echoing around him.
As his figure vanished from sight, a fierce battle unfolded in the distance.
The White-Clad Woman was indeed Li Xin.
The real Li Xin was dead; the soul of the Fourth Daughter had taken over her body, playing the role of the Ghostly Mother and vowing to consume all children in the world. Yet because of Ye Chenfeng, she found herself entangled in emotions that were hard to escape.
Ye Chenfeng's cold gaze fixed on the White-Clad Woman.
He pointed the Ghost-Collecting Gourd at her without hesitation, chanting incantations. The White-Clad Woman struggled and let out a shriek before transforming into a wisp of smoke that was drawn into the Ghost-Collecting Gourd.
Ye Chenfeng finished preparing the talisman and whispered, "Rest in peace, Fourth Daughter! What did your slaughter bring you in the end? The Eighteen Layers of Hell await you, take care."
He collected the White-Clad Woman, while someone shouted for help.
Then, many people rushed up the mountain, and Ding Li followed to see what was happening.
The scene before her left her stunned.
In a natural pit at the mountain's hollow, a girl was bound with a type of vine, barely conscious. From her clothing, it was hard to tell who she was, but looking at her face, wasn't she the Xiang'er they had been searching for?
What happened to Xiang'er?
Ye Chenfeng followed the crowd and watched as local officials rescued the unconscious Xiang'er. He noticed she was covered in bruises; the pain etched on her face told him that Xiang'er had endured unimaginable suffering and torment.
This was the evil deed of Fourth Daughter. She wanted to raise another filled with hatred, a Xiang'er who grew up in the bitter waters of resentment, aiming to create another Ghostly Mother.
Xiang'er was saved, but her psychological scars would take a long time to heal.
Ye Chenfeng and Ding Li spent a lot of time accompanying her, hoping she could feel the love they bestowed upon her and wishing for Xiang'er to regain her strength.
Ye Chenfeng also investigated events from over a decade ago concerning Fourth Daughter. After searching for clues, he confirmed that such events indeed took place.
After Fourth Daughter's death, a significant incident occurred in their family. One quiet night, a mysterious fire broke out, and her Biological Mother was burned alive in her sleep.
Now only Xiao Wu and the eldest sister remained. When asked about Fourth Daughter, they were reluctant to speak of it.
