Ye Chenfeng felt an inexplicable surge of hatred within him; he despised Tiger Mom and that cowardly Tall Guy.
When he was home alone, facing a few goslings, a murderous intent unexpectedly arose in his heart.
The soft, clumsy appearance of the goslings did not evoke even a hint of affection from him. He held a pair of scissors in his hand, imagining the scene of cutting the goslings' necks. The gentle calls of the goslings and their waddling gait made him suddenly pull back from the brink, cursing himself inwardly: What was that about? Why would I think of killing such adorable creatures?
Ye Chenfeng slapped his forehead and set down the scissors.
In the pigpen, the pigs were grunting loudly.
He begrudgingly picked up the stinky Pig Slop and saw an adult goose honking. It seemed to be demanding food; this goose was Tiger Mom's favorite and was about to lay an egg the next day.
The goose egg was meant for Xiao Wu.
Occasionally, that Tall Guy's Biological Father would use it as a side dish.
But there was no portion for the little girl.
In those days, food was scarce.
A ceramic bowl sat atop some potatoes; inside it was rice, with potatoes underneath.
The Fourth Daughter ate potatoes while everyone else had rice.
Thinking of all this made Ye Chenfeng angry. He placed the Pig Slop on the ground, reached out to grab the honking female goose, and forcefully pushed its neck into the boiling hot Pig Slop.
The goose struggled desperately, flapping its wings, but it was futile.
After a while, with its head submerged in the Pig Slop, Ye Chenfeng suddenly realized what he had done and hurriedly pulled the goose's head up.
On the surface, the goose's head appeared uninjured, but it seemed dazed and no longer emitted its piercing honks.
In the afternoon, the goose curled up in a corner, ignoring Tiger Mom's calls no matter how much she beckoned.
"Strange."
Tiger Mom went to check on the goose, looking at its neck and prying open its beak. A gasp escaped her lips. Startled, Biological Father hurried over to see what was wrong. Goodness, the goose's beak was filled with blisters and had already rotted severely. No wonder the goose was listless and refused to eat.
Ye Chenfeng dared not speak.
No matter how Tiger Mom questioned him, he shook his head and said he didn't know.
The goose couldn't hold on for long and died.
It starved to death.
Ye Chenfeng looked at the plucked goose, feeling a deep sense of guilt.
As night fell, Ye Chenfeng didn't go to sleep but sat on the threshold, resting his chin on his hand, gazing out the door where three graves stood.
Two nameless trees jutted out awkwardly from the mounds.
Ye Chenfeng cursed inwardly: Li Xin, what is your background? How dare you insert me into your story? I want to go back. And what about Ding Li? Now Ding Li is living alone; she must be having nightmares.
What should I do?
"Why aren't you in bed yet? We have guests tomorrow; you need to get up early to prepare Pig Slop."
Tiger Mom suddenly appeared behind him, startling Ye Chenfeng.
Time for bed.
Ye Chenfeng sulkily entered the dark room, curling up under the musty cotton bedding. He thought about many things, drifting into a daydream until he unknowingly fell asleep.
He wished that when he woke up, he would see Ding Li right away.
But when he woke up and opened his eyes, he still saw Tiger Mom and the environment he disliked.
Saw Vine was a wild plant used for feeding pigs.
Ye Chenfeng crushed the Saw Vine and busily got to work.
The steaming Pig Slop was ready in no time.
Ye Chenfeng mixed the Pig Slop with some water and then poured it into the pig trough. The pigs, starving, quickly devoured the Pig Slop in no time at all.
Mission accomplished; wasn't it time to play a little?
After all, Ye Chenfeng was now the Fourth Daughter.
A twelve or thirteen-year-old girl, playful and with a great ability to sleep.
That morning, Tiger Mom had not held back, using her long nails to pinch him on his arms, back, and other places, leaving many bruises.
Some areas even broke skin.
Fortunately, the Fourth Daughter had tough skin and showed no signs of infection.
However, the Fourth Daughter's life was indeed full of twists and turns.
Just after he fed the pigs, one by one they began to howl and died with their legs in the air.
Oh no, what was happening?
Ye Chenfeng was so scared that he trembled all over, breaking into a cold sweat before running out without daring to come back.
He heard people say it was due to cyanide poisoning.
Saw Vine is toxic, but during the cooking process, it needs to be stirred and splashed with an appropriate amount of clean water.
But didn’t Ye Chenfeng know this?
The pig is dead.
Tiger Mom was so furious that she stomped her feet, gritting her teeth and wanting to skin the dead woman.
He didn’t dare to go home.
He wandered outside like a lost soul.
In the dead of night, Ye Chenfeng hugged his knees, curled up at someone else's doorstep.
A shiny object flickered in front of his eyes. He opened them, startled, and jumped up. Yet he still couldn’t escape, as he was caught red-handed by Tiger Mom and Biological Father.
This time, being dragged back meant facing death.
Poor Ye Chenfeng, why did he have to take the blame for Fourth Daughter?
He was in so much pain that he couldn’t sleep, feeling cold and hungry with whip marks all over his body.
“Tiger Mom, may you never find peace. I hate you all.”
Ye Chenfeng cursed Tiger Mom from his bed. He cursed everything beautiful; he didn’t understand why he felt such hatred towards them.
Cursing wouldn’t change anything. He still had to continue living in place of Fourth Daughter. Eventually, one day, he once again angered Tiger Mom.
This time, Tiger Mom glared at him with eyes full of rage, as if she wanted to devour him whole, unleashing a torrent of scathing insults.
What she said, Ye Chenfeng couldn’t remember.
He was determined to die.
The words were so filthy that he felt embarrassed to utter them.
Was this really what the Biological Mother said to her own daughter?
He suspected that the Fourth Daughter was not even the Tiger Mom's biological child, but rather someone picked up from somewhere; otherwise, how could the Biological Mother treat her like this? Even a tiger would not eat its own cubs.
As Ye Chenfeng walked along, he felt as if he were the Fourth Daughter, the tragic girl in this story.
He wore old clothes, discarded by his eldest sister, hand-me-downs from relatives.
He ate potatoes that others refused to touch.
When he first arrived, he had stolen an egg, only for the Tiger Mom to hide it away afterward.
Once, the Tiger Mom spoke in her sleep.
She was sleeping when she suddenly shouted, "Dead girl, boil two eggs."
Ye Chenfeng was outside when he heard her call. He rushed in and saw her sleeping. Just as he was about to leave, she shouted again, "Boil two eggs."
"Where are the eggs?"
"In the drawer under the bowl cabinet."
Ye Chenfeng chuckled; how had he not thought that the eggs would be in the drawer? He gleefully ran over, took two eggs, and started boiling them.
Once the eggs were cooked, the Tiger Mom woke up. Seeing the boiled eggs, she flew into a rage: "Dead girl, you’re too greedy! How dare you steal my eggs!" She then grabbed his hair and slammed his head against the wall. Fortunately, the wall was made of mixed mud and straw; even with such forceful impact, it only made the wall shake slightly. Ye Chenfeng did not feel any pain.
Tiger Mom, seeing that Ye Chenfeng was not hurt, simply picked him up by the waist and lifted him high before slamming him down onto the ground.
This time, Ye Chenfeng grimaced in pain, unable to get back up for a long while.
Tiger Mom carelessly finished eating her eggs, wiped her mouth, and without even glancing at the still-lying Fourth Daughter, she clapped her hands and walked away.
Ye Chenfeng felt despair.
In the pitch-black night, he wasn’t afraid; instead, he remembered there was a well on the high ridge.
The water in the well was clear and sweet.
Ye Chenfeng leaned over the well's edge, thinking of many useless things.
He thought about how this well had nourished many people; everyone in the village relied on its water to survive. If he were to jump in, would he pollute the water?
With that thought, he dismissed the idea of jumping into the well.
A rope could strangle him. He undid his belt and tied it around his neck, pulling hard—
"Ye Chenfeng, what’s wrong? Don’t scare me."
Hearing the voice calling out, it was Ding Li crying and shouting.
He opened his eyes, incredulously looking around.
What the hell? How did I end up back home?
"Am I at home?" He held a piece of rope in his hand while Ding Li frantically untied the rope around his own neck.
What kind of logic is this!
"Why are you feeling this way? What will I do if you die?" Ding Li's eyes were red from tears, and she was so heartbroken that she almost cried herself into a fit.
Ye Chenfeng got up, a deep mark around his neck.
Was it real? Had the earlier scene been just a long dream?
Perhaps my previous self was a girl, the Fourth Daughter?
Ye Chenfeng's mind was in chaos. He felt anxious and tried to comfort Ding Li, repeatedly asking, "How long did I sleep? What date is it today?"
Ding Li stopped crying and said, "What's wrong with you? You came back last night without saying a word and just fell asleep. When I got up, you were still sleeping. I went out for a run and came back to find you like this. Isn't today Sunday?"
He reassured Ding Li that he was fine.
If there was something wrong, it should be Li Xin.
This story was told by Li Xin; she seemed to know something. Could she see through a person's past and present?
After washing up, Ye Chenfeng planned to go to the Paper Craft Shop. He hoped Li Xin would appear again and provide the best ending for this story.
What would happen to the Fourth Daughter in the story? He was eager to find out.
Just as he was about to leave, someone knocked on the door and called from outside, "Mr. Ye, are you home?"
It was exactly nine o'clock.
Someone had gone to the Paper Craft Shop only to find it closed and had come specifically to look for Ye Chenfeng at home.
Ye Chenfeng opened the door, and the anxious person rushed in, saying, "Ye Chenfeng, you have to help me! The orphanage has lost two children."
"Have you called the police?"
"I did, but it was useless, which is why I came to find you." The speaker was the new director of the welfare institute, who had been troubled by Xiang'er’s situation in the past.
Now that she had come seeking help, Ye Chenfeng felt he had to assist her.
He invited the director inside and offered her a seat while Ding Li brought in some hot tea.
The director informed Ye Chenfeng that the children had been very unsettled lately.
They claimed to have seen something terrifying that came to take away two of their peers.
Despite thorough investigations based on the children's descriptions, no leads could be found; the person they described simply did not exist, leaving no trace behind.
The children were missing, with no sign of life or death.
It was eerily similar to the case of Xiao Qiang's disappearance.
Ye Chenfeng decided to visit the scene himself and instructed Ding Li to open the Paper Craft Shop, promising to join her later.
The welfare institute remained unchanged.
The remaining children were under strict protection.
They were not allowed to be out of their teachers' sight for even a moment, gathering together to play, read, or watch television, but forbidden from playing outside in the yard.
"Kids, I'm your Brother Ye. Come tell me what you like and what you don't!" Ye Chenfeng loved being around children. He quickly bonded with them, and they felt a sense of safety with his presence.
