Ding Li's skills had improved remarkably, and the paper figures stood neatly in the shop, resembling soldiers awaiting inspection. Ye Chenfeng knew that there were paper figures in the Paper Craft Shop, yet he was still slightly startled when he stepped inside.
It was quite a distance from here to Ding Li's residence, requiring him to walk several streets. So, being here alone at night meant that Ding Li would have no idea.
The mention of "Xiao Qiang," that street, and the words spoken by that person lingered in Ye Chenfeng's mind. He had come here this time to wait for the child named Xiao Qiang. If he truly was a lost ghost child, he would surely return to this place.
The night was deep and silent.
There was an eerie stillness all around, with not a sound to be heard. Occasionally, a car would pass by the Paper Craft Shop, but no one stopped to glance at this eerily supernatural shop that remained open in the dead of night.
In the past, whenever Ye Chenfeng appeared here, various ghosts would show up seeking his help.
Most of those who came to him were victims of untimely deaths—deaths that occurred suddenly and without warning, where the deceased had not yet reached the end of their natural lifespan. Those who died unexpectedly would not be collected by the Underworld because they had not been recorded on the death list; Yin Chai would not take them to report to the Underworld, leaving them as wandering souls.
Ye Chenfeng utilized The Ghost-Quaking Scripture to painstakingly try to assist every one of these untimely souls who sought his help.
These souls carried heavy resentment and anger; if not careful, they could easily turn into Evil Spirits or vengeful ghosts, ultimately harming innocent people.
Tonight felt different from usual.
Ye Chenfeng sat at the entrance for a long time. Outside, there were whispers of ghostly voices that ordinary people could not hear, but they merely passed by without any intention of entering for help. How many pages does a book have? He had read a third of the book in his hands when his eyes grew tired, prompting him to rise and pour himself a glass of water.
He planned to wait a few more minutes; if no "visitors" arrived, he would head back home.
"Tap~ Tap~ Tap..." Was that the sound of high heels?
Ye Chenfeng raised his head warily to look at the door.
Outside, the moonlight flowed like water.
The people inside were restless, the sound of high heels echoing like a kick to his heart, making Ye Chenfeng feel a bit uneasy.
It seemed that someone had approached but had not entered immediately, as if contemplating something.
Unable to wait any longer, Ye Chenfeng stood up and walked to the door, his body still inside while he stretched his neck out to look outside.
The bright moon hung high in the sky, and the moonlight sprinkled across the ground, creating a deep and mysteriously enchanting atmosphere. He withdrew his gaze and looked toward a lamppost not far from the entrance, where he noticed someone standing quietly.
A woman with a slender figure and graceful demeanor was holding a small round mirror, using the lamplight to touch up her lipstick.
From the side, Ye Chenfeng felt a sense of familiarity with this person. As he focused more closely, he was secretly astonished—wasn't she Li Xin, who had disappeared from everyone's sight for a long time?
“Li Xin.”
Indeed, it was Li Xin. Hearing Ye Chenfeng call her name, she turned around. With surprise, she replied, “Oh, Ye Chenfeng! What brings you here?”
“Why couldn't it be me? This is Ye Family Paper Craft Shop.”
Li Xin walked over with an exaggerated expression. “Wow, you’re already the boss now.”
Ye Chenfeng let Li Xin into the room and reminded her, “Don’t mind those paper figures; they’re just for show. But I hope they won’t scare you.”
Li Xin paused for a moment, her expression slightly dull as she replied, "It's nothing, but seeing these things at first glance gives me the chills."
Ye Chenfeng brought over a cup of water, still warm, and handed it to Li Xin, saying, "If you're cold, just have a sip of water."
Li Xin took the cup and sat down, her legs neatly closed in a proper posture. She looked around with an appreciative gaze and said in a tone filled with awe and joy, "I didn't expect it; Ye Chenfeng has really made something of himself."
"It's a small business. I'm not expecting to make money; I just want to make my wife happy. As long as she's pleased, I support whatever she wants to do."
"Is she... very beautiful?" Li Xin asked, seemingly a bit uncomfortable. Her expression shifted slightly, becoming somewhat unpredictable. Her piercing gaze seemed to want to uncover all of Ye Chenfeng's inner secrets as she boldly stared at him without reservation.
Ye Chenfeng scratched his scalp awkwardly and mumbled, "She's alright."
Li Xin shook her head and said, "You can't be careless. What do you mean by 'alright'? I can hear reluctance in your words."
Ye Chenfeng insisted, shaking his head again, "There's no reluctance. It's about wanting one person's heart and not parting ways until old age. I really get along well with her."
Li Xin set the cup down and walked over to Ye Chenfeng.
A waft of fragrance hit him; Ye Chenfeng suppressed the urge to sneeze and took a step back, asking, "What brings you here today?" In truth, he wanted to say that it was already eleven-thirty at night—wasn't she afraid of encountering any bad people out here alone?
"I'm not just passing by; I came because..." Li Xin glanced at one of the paper figures among the others and walked over slowly. She picked up that paper figure and said to Ye Chenfeng, "Tomorrow is the anniversary of my child's passing. I'm feeling quite down. I came out for a walk and saw that you have the paper figures I wanted. I thought I'd buy one for my child. He’s all alone in that world and has come to me in dreams countless times, saying that it's very cold and lonely there. He wants a companion. Ye Chenfeng, can you sell this to me?"
Hearing Li Xin's tone and seeing her sorrowful expression filled with poignant grief stirred Ye Chenfeng's heart with sympathy. He would gladly give her not just one paper figure but all the ones in his shop if he could.
However, after so many years of her disappearance, could it really be just because she got married? And what about the child? What was that all about?
"Your child..."
Li Xin's eyes were filled with tears as she held the paper figure as if it were a real child, letting out a sorrowful sigh. "To be honest, my in-laws are quite traditional and don't like me working after marriage. So I resigned and stopped making public appearances. That's why you haven't seen me for so long."
Ye Chenfeng went to pour another cup of hot water and handed it to her. Li Xin reached out to take it, and their hands brushed against each other. He was slightly taken aback; her hand was so cold. A question formed in his mind, and he asked, "I remember you mentioned studying at Purple City University. I asked around and found out you've already graduated, and you're not just a few years ahead of me but a Senior Sister."
Li Xin smiled faintly and said, "Yes, in the end, I'm still your Senior Sister, aren't I?"
"That cold humor of yours isn't funny. It made me ask everyone at school, and they thought I had a crush on you."
"Hahaha..."
What kind of world did women see? Tears still lingered in her eyes, yet a string of laughter like silver bells left Ye Chenfeng bewildered.
"Hey hey."
Li Xin smiled modestly, her tone meaningful as she said, "Can't I make you have a little crush on me?"
"Just joking..." Ye Chenfeng deliberately glanced at his watch; time was flying by—it was almost one o'clock.
"Oh no, I lost track of time talking to you. I'm sorry for taking up your time; I need to head back." As she spoke, Li Xin shook the paper figure in her hand and asked how much it cost.
Ye Chenfeng waved his hand dismissively. "Just give a few bucks symbolically; I can't give this away for free. That wouldn't be right."
Li Xin nodded in understanding and took out a ten-dollar bill. "Is this okay?"
"Sure."
Ye Chenfeng sent Li Xin off, concerned. "Where do you live? Should I give you a ride?"
"Better not. It wouldn't look good if my in-laws saw. I'll just head back myself; my home isn't far from here." She took a few steps, then turned back to ask, "Are you here every day?"
"Not really. I work during the day, and aside from the dual cultivation meetings, I usually come here around ten at night."
"Oh. You leave her alone at home and feel okay about it?"
"I won't be gone long; I'll make sure to get back before she wakes up."
"Alright, take care of yourself. Life is fragile; we're not made of steel but flesh and blood. If you keep this up, your body won't handle it."
"Thanks for your concern."
As they spoke, a car approached silently. Li Xin said it was her ride and waved goodbye to Ye Chenfeng as she walked towards the vehicle in her delicate high heels.
From a distance, the white sedan gave Ye Chenfeng an eerie feeling, almost as if it were driverless. He never saw the driver’s face; even rolling down the window would have been enough, but there was no movement until Li Xin got inside, and still no sign of the driver.
Was this driver Li Xin's husband?
If so, that person was incredibly rude.
Ye Chenfeng turned back to close the door and walked home through the quiet night, feeling as if he were isolated from the world, which was unsettling.
Some say that if you walk too much at night, you're bound to encounter ghosts.
Ye Chenfeng was someone who dealt with ghosts regularly. However, the ghosts he encountered always kept their distance from him. They would only appear when they absolutely needed his help; otherwise, they would vanish long before he arrived.
Many people lived in the building he called home.
Yet, he didn't know many of them. Every day, as he entered and exited the stairwell, he would merely nod in a polite greeting. Those who were aware of his situation regarded him with a sense of awe but had no intention of becoming friends.
After graduation, he and Qin Keqing rarely gathered. He heard that Qin Keqing had taken over her father's business and was now the general manager of a large company.
The general manager was busy, so there was basically no contact between her and Ye Chenfeng.
Shen Binghan had gone abroad for further studies and had fallen completely out of touch.
Only Su Bei occasionally called, talking endlessly about work and dating. Ye Chenfeng remained a listener, with little to contribute to the conversation.
He certainly couldn't tell Su Bei that today he helped a ghost and tomorrow he would send off someone who died unexpectedly.
After all, home was a warm harbor.
As he opened the door, Ye Chenfeng was changing his shoes when Ding Li's frantic screams startled him, causing his heart to skip a beat. In a panic, he dashed into the bedroom without thinking twice.
Ding Li was drenched in sweat and looked terrified. She gasped for breath and upon seeing Ye Chenfeng, exclaimed in horror, "I dreamt about Xiaoqiang! He called for me to save him, saying there’s a terrifying person who wants to eat him!"
