"Alright, I accept my punishment and will wash it again." Ye Chenfeng raised his hand, speaking while observing the changes in Sun Xianger's expression.
"Come on, I've already washed it again," Li Xin said, and indeed, she seemed to mean it as she went to check the characters that Xiang'er had just written.
Seeing Li Xin approaching for an inspection, Xiang'er quickly moved to hide a piece of paper behind her back, refusing to let it be checked.
Li Xin noticed that the table was covered with names written by Sun Xianger. What was she hiding?
"Let me see that paper behind your back."
"No way," Sun Xianger replied stubbornly, her face serious.
Li Xin was taken aback and exchanged glances with Ye Chenfeng. The latter smiled and said, "If you won't show it to Sister Li Xin, how about showing it to me instead?"
Xiang'er smiled and nodded obediently, handing the piece of paper to Ye Chenfeng.
As Ye Chenfeng took the paper and looked at it, his smile immediately froze.
What had Xiang'er drawn?
The paper was filled with flames, and in the middle was a small figure. Written beside it was his name, scrawled in a way that looked quite menacing.
How could Xiang'er draw fire?
"Alright, I'm not letting you play anymore. It's already late; I need to go back," Li Xin said as she untied her apron and wiped her hands on it. Perhaps feeling it was still dirty, she walked into the kitchen to wash up.
Ye Chenfeng continued to examine the paper.
Sun Xianger rested her chin on her hand, gazing at him.
When Li Xin mentioned leaving earlier, the two seemed not to have heard her. As she stepped out of the kitchen and looked at Ye Chenfeng and Sun Xianger, she felt there was something strange connecting them. She shook her head and walked to the door, reminding them once more, "I'm going back now."
Ye Chenfeng suddenly realized and hurriedly said, "It's not safe for you to go back so late. Why don't you stay the night and head back tomorrow?"
"Actually, my home isn't far from here. I didn't know until I came to your place that we lived so close," Li Xin replied, waving goodbye to Sun Xianger.
Sun Xianger chirped, "Goodbye, teacher."
Ye Chenfeng crumpled a piece of paper in his hand and ran a few steps outside, silently nodding at Li Xin as she went downstairs. She nodded back and then continued down.
"Chenfeng Brother, you like Li Xin." It wasn't surprising to ask this question, but Ye Chenfeng's expression was strange, filled with jealousy.
To avoid any misunderstandings, Ye Chenfeng smiled lightly and said, "Nonsense. I like you, Ding Li Sister. How could I possibly be interested in someone else?"
"She's prettier than Ding Li Sister," Sun Xianger said, staring intently at Ye Chenfeng with a gaze that was far too sharp for her age.
Ye Chenfeng met her gaze, catching every subtle change in her expression. He replied firmly, "Everyone has an appreciation for beauty. Love and like are different. Who I love or like is none of your business, little girl."
Sun Xianger turned away from Ye Chenfeng's piercing stare and glanced at the alarm clock, which pointed to 11 o'clock sharp.
Ye Chenfeng sensed that Xiang'er had a secret that wasn't simple. What that secret was, he couldn't figure out at the moment unless she spoke in her sleep.
"Xiang'er, go wash up and get some sleep."
"Oh."
Ye Chenfeng stretched his neck and finally felt exhausted all over.
Sun Xianger stood up and glanced at Ye Chenfeng before saying, "I'm going to take a shower."
Ye Chenfeng thought he misheard her. Sitting on the sofa, he watched as Xiang'er indeed headed toward the bathroom.
"What is that girl up to?" Sun Xianger wondered.
Ye Chenfeng felt a headache coming on, his mind racing. He began to mentally sort through everything that had happened, and suddenly slapped his thigh, cursing under his breath, "Damn it, how could I forget about that?"
What he had forgotten was the legend of the Flame Demon.
He recalled the story that Chen Peiling had told him; that street was none other than University Road.
Chen Peiling had passed away, and at the time, he had been too preoccupied with Ghost Granny's matters to ask about the arsonist's name.
But why was it University Road? The person Xiong Qisheng wanted to find was also on University Road, and they ran an internet café!
The Flame Demon was linked to University Road as well. Ye Chenfeng remembered stumbling into the Ghostly Maze and the scene he had witnessed there. The more he thought about it, the more he felt there was some connection to recent events.
Splashing sounds echoed from the bathroom—was Xiang'er really taking a shower without closing the door? The water was splashing loudly, and it sounded like she was singing. She was so emotional; just a moment ago, she had been stern with Li Xin, and now she was alone in the bathroom singing away.
Ye Chenfeng's thoughts were interrupted. He stood up and headed to the bedroom. Remembering Xiang'er, he turned back to the bathroom and said, "Xiang'er, you should sleep in the Small Bedroom."
The Small Bedroom had originally been prepared for Ding Li's little one.
Ye Dad was eager for a grandchild and had called someone over early to set things up; even the crib was ready.
Xiang'er responded with a cheerful acknowledgment and continued singing in the shower.
Ye Chenfeng returned to his thoughts about the Flame Demon.
The alarm clock's hands pointed to twelve when Sun Xianger dashed into the small bedroom.
Is this what a child's room looks like in a big city? It's so beautiful. This is just the basic setup; I can't imagine how stunning it would be if it were fully furnished!
Sun Xianger lay on the soft little bed, gazing at the crib—suddenly, she heard a sound that resembled a baby's laughter, and then the crib began to rock on its own. Slowly, a small hand as red as blood reached out from beside the crib.
This scene startled Xiang'er, who nervously swallowed and quickly pulled the blanket over her head.
Even with her head covered, that crisp, eerie laughter still seeped through to her ears. Sun Xianger covered her ears and told herself: There's nothing there; it's just an illusion. Ding Li's child is dead; it's gone.
Hee hee—giggle—yayaya.
The child's voice was in the room; it was real. Xiang'er, unable to sleep, crawled out of bed and rushed barefoot to the door, then dashed into Ye Chenfeng's bedroom.
Ye Chenfeng had left his bedroom door open because he was worried about Xiang'er.
Sun Xianger easily opened the door and without hesitation dove into Ye Chenfeng's bed.
Ye Chenfeng was truly exhausted and sleeping deeply. He only woke up when he felt a smooth body like a loach pressing against him. Startled, he jumped up and landed on the bed.
"Xiang'er, why did you come here to sleep?"
Xiang'er lazily curled up in the blankets, unwilling to leave. "Chenfeng Brother, I like you. I want to have children with you."
What on earth is this girl thinking?
Ye Chenfeng was drenched in cold sweat from shock. "No! You little girl don’t understand anything; don’t say such things."
Xiang'er propped herself up slightly and said to Ye Chenfeng, "Chenfeng Brother, actually I understand everything. I saw my brother and sister-in-law doing that thing, and I also saw my brother flirting with women from the village, and I saw..."
"Stop talking, you sleep here while I go to the study," Ye Chenfeng roared, turning on his heel and heading to the study.
Sun Xianger greedily inhaled the scent left by Ye Chenfeng in the blankets. She resembled a young cow in heat, her face flushed, her fingers instinctively reaching to touch herself—
"You silly girl, I'm helping you, but you're just too foolish."
The mocking voice of her contract partner echoed in her mind.
Xiang'er immediately felt shy and hurriedly pulled the blanket over herself tightly.
Ye Chenfeng didn't go to the study; instead, he went to the small bedroom to grab a blanket and moved to the sofa in the living room.
Sun Xianger's earlier words had made him quite embarrassed.
He knew she wasn't lying.
In the countryside, things weren't as open and casual. It was just that due to limited conditions, the houses weren't soundproof. When engaging in such activities, not everyone could pretend to be deaf and mute. The young girl, Sun Xianger, was at an age of blossoming youth; she had seen and heard quite a bit about the romantic escapades that came from rural life. This could be called precociousness.
Her body hadn't matured, but her thoughts were fully developed.
To prevent Sun Xianger from pulling any tricks again, Ye Chenfeng locked the door leading to the living room this time. This way, he could sleep soundly. Before going to bed, he called Ding Li to check in with each other and then rested.
Finally, Ye Chenfeng could sleep peacefully.
In his dreams, he felt unbearably hot. He opened his eyes and saw flames filling the room—how did it catch fire? Shocked, he hurriedly tried to extinguish it, but the fire seemed alive; not only did it not go out, but it also blazed even brighter.
In the glow of the flames, he saw his mother reaching out her hand and crying for help.
Ye Chenfeng felt heartbroken, trembling as he reached out to try to grab his mother.
"Little brat, you lost the first round. Your mother has become a sacrifice. Get ready for the second round; if you lose, she'll be mine," the sinister laughter echoed, piercing through the air and jolting Ye Chenfeng awake from his nightmare.
He woke up drenched in sweat.
As he threw off the blanket and got out of bed, Ye Chenfeng realized he had fallen asleep on the living room sofa. He made his way to the bathroom, splashing cold water on his face, feeling refreshed as the chill washed over him.
That voice echoed in his mind: "Get ready for the second round; if you lose, she'll be mine."
Who was it?
Who the hell are you?! Ye Chenfeng's anger flared as he slammed his fist against the mirror, blood oozing from his knuckles and dripping onto the floor.
"Chenfeng Brother, what's wrong?"
Ye Chenfeng turned around, his face dark with fury. "Sun Xianger, what are you staring at? Go to bed; it's best if you stay out of my business."
It was the first time Sun Xianger had seen Ye Chenfeng so enraged. She was startled, trembling slightly as she hurried back into her bedroom, too afraid to come out.
Ye Chenfeng plunged his head into the sink, letting the cold water wash over his face, seeping into his pores as his anger began to dissipate, replaced by a chilling calm.
Little Monk Shen Binghan hadn't come out for a long time; Ye Chenfeng truly missed him.
He took out the Ghost-Collecting Gourd and placed it on the coffee table before pouring himself a drink. After a stick of incense burned down, there was still no response.
After waiting for what felt like an eternity with no sign of movement, Ye Chenfeng grew weary and dozed off again.
A soft crack broke through the silence, instinctively causing him to open his eyes. To his shock, he saw the Ghost-Collecting Gourd split into two pieces, and a foul odor filled the air.
Then, he heard faint footsteps coming from the hallway.
"Who?" Ye Chenfeng shouted angrily, jumping up to chase after the sound.
He saw the door to Sun Xianger's bedroom move slightly, giving the impression that someone had entered.
But this person was definitely not Sun Xianger.
Ye Chenfeng rushed over and opened the door to enter.
Sun Xianger was sleeping soundly, showing no signs of pretending to be asleep.
Ye Chenfeng felt a surge of panic. Who had just been there? Not only had they ruined the Ghost-Collecting Gourd, but they had also moved around right under his nose. He searched the bedroom; the wardrobe contained only clothes, there was no one in the bathroom, and nothing could be hidden under the solid bed.
On the bed—
There was only Sun Xianger; no one else.
Ye Chenfeng glanced around and quickly stepped back out, picking up the Ghost-Collecting Gourd to examine it.
After a moment of inspection, he let out a cold laugh and said, "A switch?"
