The room was empty, with a faint scent of incense lingering in the air. Ye Chenfeng sat on the bed where his mother had mysteriously passed away, his brow furrowed in pain. He still couldn't believe that his mother had left them so inexplicably.
In the bedroom, as the law enforcement personnel investigated, they found no signs of a short circuit or any possibility of suicide leading to her death. Besides a few small burn holes in the bedding and pillow, everything else remained undamaged.
Ye Chenfeng did not believe this was due to any internal factors. On his way back, he had received that strange phone call and had come to the conclusion that something was present in the house. He activated his Yin Eye and lit Soul Incense, but it was of no use.
His mother's soul did not appear. Logically, as a New Soul, she should have inevitably manifested in the house. After all, New Souls wander in places they frequented during their lives for three days after death, unaware that they have passed on.
Ye Chenfeng searched everywhere—his mother's workplace, the square, and the market—but he did not see his mother's New Soul.
The voice on the phone had said it wanted to play a game with him. If he lost, their souls would be stolen; if he won, the evil entity would leave his life.
Ye Chenfeng's teeth ground together as he suddenly shouted, "Who are you? Hiding in the shadows is cowardly! If we're playing a game, you shouldn't be lurking around! And besides, the game hasn't even started yet—how can you casually take someone's soul?"
The room was silent except for the heavy ticking of the clock on the wall, swinging back and forth with a dull sound; there were no other noises.
Humans are weak and easily eroded by malevolent entities that steal souls.
As stated in The Ghost-Quaking Scripture: humans were originally good but became corrupted by foul entities that tainted their hearts—this is the root of human evil. The contaminated heart then infects the entire being, causing humanity to fall ill in many ways.
Lying, cowardice, greed, cruelty, hypocrisy, deception, murder, conspiracy, and plunder—all these ailments manifest differently in each individual based on their unique experiences of infection and purification.
Thus, hidden among humanity are these evil entities that seize opportunities to prey on human souls.
The more severely a human soul is tainted, the more these entities are drawn to follow closely behind, waiting for a chance to strike.
The severely polluted entity, known as the Polluted Soul Entity, was completely unaware of its own nature.
Ye Chenfeng had no idea what his mother was truly thinking, but he was well aware that her death was connected to his grandmother.
His grandmother's greedy nature had led her to ruthlessly take the lives of others, with his mother aiding and abetting her, while his father turned a blind eye. These malevolent forces were quietly watching them.
Those who commit evil deeds will inevitably face their just desserts.
People act, and heaven observes.
Ye Chenfeng did not feel excessive sorrow over his mother's death; he simply felt pity for her.
He did not want more innocent victims to suffer from spiritual pollution, so he needed to find this deeply hidden malevolent entity as soon as possible. This entity was itself a source of pollution, and after its death, it had intensified its efforts to steal the souls of others to strengthen its own essence.
Who was this person?
His mother had died in a fire that originated from within her body, so this deeply hidden malevolent entity must be connected to fire in some way.
Moreover, whenever accidents occurred, Xiang'er was always present, suggesting that these incidents were related to her.
With his thoughts resolved, Ye Chenfeng hurried to meet up with his father.
Ye Dad looked old and haggard, having lost considerable weight.
“Dad, you need to recite the scriptures from this book more often. Also, make sure to keep this with you at all times and avoid going near any sources of fire.”
Ye Dad did not believe in ghosts or deities; he had a particular aversion to Ye Chenfeng's grandmother. Looking at the book his son handed him—some sort of purification scripture—he frowned and said, “Your mother has had an accident, and you show me this? What does it mean?”
“Dad, just trust me this time. Every day, wake up early, bathe and change your clothes. Stay in a quiet room and read this book with focus.”
Ye Dad noticed his son's unusually serious expression, as if he were quite nervous. He asked suspiciously, "What are you afraid of?"
"Dad, I'm not afraid of anything. I just need you to recite this book to help Mom escape from sin and purify her soul." Ye Chenfeng had no choice but to lie to his father. He couldn't say that this book was his last hope; it might not save her, but it could help cleanse her spirit and make the evil entities abandon their pursuit.
He couldn't say that out loud.
If he did, he might get slapped.
Ye Chenfeng had always been afraid of his dad.
"Well, I don't believe in these things, but since you say so, I'll give it a try."
Hearing his father's response, Ye Chenfeng felt a bit more at ease.
After leaving his dad, Ye Chenfeng headed straight to the hospital. He was genuinely worried about Ding Li, fearing that evil entities might target her.
This concern stemmed from the phone call where they were mentioned.
In Ye Chenfeng's mind, the evil voice on the phone referring to "them" could only mean his family members.
The evil entity was lurking nearby.
He had no idea what form the entity took. Was it a creature wearing a black hood with no face that specifically fed on human souls, or was it a terrifying ghost? Without a clear target, Ye Chenfeng couldn't determine what the entity looked like.
In just two days, so much had happened. Ye Chenfeng was only human; he wasn't a deity, so he felt a bit lost.
He arrived at the hospital and found Ding Li.
Ding Li was fine and showed significant improvement compared to before.
"Ye Chenfeng," Ding Li said, nestling into his embrace like a little bird, reluctant to leave.
"Did you wash your hair?" Ye Chenfeng gently stroked Ding Li's soft hair and asked softly.
"Yes, the nurse called in a hairdresser for me," Ding Li replied, lifting her head and smiling sweetly.
Ye Chenfeng forced a smile to mask the sadness within him. He nodded and said, "I'm really happy that you're feeling better, but for now, let's not go back to my place. How about you stay at Su Dad's house?"
Ding Li felt a wave of anxiety at Ye Chenfeng's words. "Is it because your parents don't like me anymore?"
"No, don't daydream. Su Dad and Su Mother are my family; there are many things you still don't know! But I'll tell you about them later." Ye Chenfeng held her close and continued, "Things at home are a bit chaotic, you know how it is with Xiang'er. I'm afraid you might not like what you see..."
The kind lie made Ye Chenfeng feel guilty. He turned his head away, unable to meet Ding Li's gaze. Quickly, he helped her pack her things in preparation for her discharge. He also informed Su Dad and Su Mother that Ding Li would be staying with them for a while.
Su Dad and Su Mother were thrilled to hear that Ding Li would be coming over, especially since their home had been quiet lately. They eagerly agreed and even offered to come pick her up.
Understanding Ye Chenfeng's intentions, Ding Li felt delighted as she prepared to go to Su Mother's house.
After sending Ding Li out of the hospital, Ye Chenfeng glanced back and noticed an elderly man in the ward silently smiling at him.
"Young man, do you have any cigarettes?"
"I do."
"Ye Chenfeng, what do you have?" Ding Li heard him and turned back to look into the ward.
There was no one left in the room except for three empty hospital beds.
"You heard wrong, I didn't say anything," Ye Chenfeng retorted, quickly pulling out a cigarette and lighting it. After smoking half of it, he discreetly placed the unfinished cigarette on the bench at the entrance of the ward.
Ye Chenfeng accompanied Ding Li to settle the bill.
While Ding Li stood in line, Ye Chenfeng swiftly returned to the ward's entrance. He noticed that only the filter of the half-smoked cigarette remained and was about to leave with a smile when an old man silently appeared in front of him.
"Young man, can you help me with something?"
Ye Chenfeng asked, "Old man, just tell me what you need. I'll do my best to help you."
"You keep asking why I haven't left. The truth is, I'm waiting for someone—my son, Xiong Biao."
"Where is your son Xiong Biao? What is he doing? Just tell me."
"He's running an internet cafe on University Road. That boy doesn't listen at all; instead of focusing on his business, he took our family's money to open this cafe and even borrowed money at high interest. Out of anger, I ended up in the hospital... Sigh! That boy's heart is truly cold. Since then, he hasn't come to see me once. Not even when I die will he come... It's heartbreaking! They say raising children is for security in old age, but I raised a child only to be robbed by him instead..."
"You want him to come see you so you can leave in peace, right?"
The old man nodded and said, "Young man, you're right. This ungrateful child might not even come to see me. Please tell him my name is Xiong Qisheng."
"Don't worry, old man. I will definitely find your son and deliver your message."
Ye Chenfeng promised Xiong Qisheng while mentally going through the shops near University Road. It seemed he had never noticed any internet cafes around!
"What’s the name of the internet cafe your son runs?"
"Biao Ge Internet Cafe."
"Got it. I'll remember."
The old man had disappeared, likely to continue sitting in the corner of the hospital room. He was thinking of his son, who hadn’t come to see him. It was this unfulfilled longing that kept him tethered to the world, unwilling to leave.
That afternoon, Ye Chenfeng took Ding Li to Su Dad's house.
After settling Ding Li, he returned to University Road to search for Biao Ge Internet Cafe!
However, he ended up with blisters on his feet and still couldn’t find it. The shop owners along University Road shook their heads, saying they had never heard of any Biao Ge Internet Cafe.
Could it be that the old man remembered incorrectly? This place was far from University Road, and the internet cafe wasn’t called Biao Ge Internet Cafe at all. Instead, it was named Entertainment Internet Cafe—a rather artistic name.
Ye Chenfeng walked into the internet cafe!
Inside, there were only middle and high school students. Upon seeing him, they were startled, thinking someone from their family had come looking for them.
Ye Chenfeng asked to see the cafe owner.
The owner was a man with a small mustache, looking rather cautious. He had a small nose, small eyes, and a small mouth, and he spoke fluently in a casual manner.
The Little Boss thought Ye Chenfeng was there for enforcement and kept explaining, “These kids don’t listen. I told them not to come; they insisted on playing anyway. It has nothing to do with me.”
“Excuse me, I’d like to ask if there’s someone named Xiong Biao in your internet cafe circle?”
