Chen Peiling agreed to take Ye Chenfeng to the Four Hospitals but made a request that he found hard to accept.
"What, you want to possess me?"
Chen Peiling didn't wait for Ye Chenfeng's agreement and continued, "And that damned gourd, you must not carry it on you."
The Ghost-Collecting Gourd was a powerful tool used against malevolent spirits. Without it, how could he rely solely on his bare hands and a few talismans to deal with the lurking Evil Spirits in the Four Hospitals?
Ye Chenfeng stood his ground.
Chen Peiling fell silent.
The situation at the Four Hospitals was dire. Ye Chenfeng had failed to contact Zhou Zhisheng in the afternoon. He sensed something was wrong and wanted to check it out with Chen Peiling, but he hadn't expected her to make so many demands.
"How about we go at night? If we go at night, you won't have to possess me," Ye Chenfeng finally conceded.
Chen Peiling nodded and said, "If you decide that early, I won't make things difficult for you."
University is a place that relies entirely on self-discipline; it's one of the most liberating social groups in life. The difference from high school is that there is more time and space, allowing one to manage their free time without constraints.
In the dormitory, the Three Troublemakers were bored and turned Ye Chenfeng into their topic of conversation, discussing ghosts and deities while an invisible Taoist hat sat atop his head. Privately, they referred to him as Ye Daozhang.
"Where are you planning to catch ghosts today, Ye Daozhang?" Su Bei asked as he saw Ye Chenfeng sorting through a mess of items, including a vermilion brush, talismans, and an old book that seemed ready to fall apart at any moment.
"I'm not going anywhere today; I just want to sleep," Ye Chenfeng replied as he organized his things. He didn't seem to be joking as he took off his jacket and pulled up a blanket to actually go to sleep.
"Hey, what kind of person are you! Today Qin Keqing invited us to Chuanxi Bazi for hotpot," Su Bei looked up at Ye Chenfeng.
Ye Chenfeng waved his hand dismissively and said, "Just enjoy yourself and bring back my share."
Qin Keqing and Shen Binghan waited at Chuanxi Bazi, watching Ye Chenfeng stubbornly refuse to go. Su Bei, feeling helpless, decided to go alone.
As Su Bei stepped out, Chen Peiling appeared.
Ye Chenfeng sensed the ghostly energy in the space, opened his eyes, and saw Chen Peiling hanging from the ceiling. As he buried his head back into the cotton bedding, he muttered, "Go find your Ye Feng. I want to sleep; I'll go to Four Hospitals tonight." Not hearing a response, he pulled back the bedding again, but Chen Peiling had vanished.
Chen Peiling and Ye Feng were truly unfortunate. Due to the changes in the Underworld's laws, they had no idea how long it would take for them to have a chance at Reincarnation. This depended on their cultivation; if they could do more good deeds and accumulate virtue within their limited abilities, then opportunities would arise.
The dormitory was very quiet, just like when he had gone with Chen Peiling to find Ye Feng last night. He caught a whiff of the scent from the bedding, sneezed, and memories flashed through his mind—recent events, long-ago moments, and things that had just happened.
In an instant, all sleepiness vanished.
He poked his head out from under the bedding; outside, the sun shone brightly. The rare sunny sky felt welcoming.
He couldn't sleep anymore and didn't want to read that boring book. He regretted not going with Su Bei to Chuanxi Bazi for hot pot.
Ye Chenfeng got up and checked his phone; it was still early. Feeling bored, he dialed Ding Li's number.
What was Ding Li doing? She never answered her phone.
Ye Chenfeng wondered what Ding Li might be up to.
Watching TV? That seemed unlikely; she was not the type to sit idle during the day. Perhaps she was at the supermarket—there were always people and noise there, which could explain why she hadn’t heard her phone ring.
After dialing several times, someone finally picked up and asked, "Who are you looking for?" The voice wasn’t Ding Li’s and wasn’t someone Ye Chenfeng recognized. He hesitated and didn’t respond until he glanced at the outgoing number and realized he had dialed incorrectly.
How did this number even appear on his phone? Ye Chenfeng checked and found that this number had called him late last night. He must have been asleep at that time since his phone was set to silent mode, which explained why he hadn’t heard it ring.
Curious about this mysterious number's origin, Ye Chenfeng dialed Ding Li's number again.
This time when the call connected, a familiar voice answered.
"Is this Ye Chenfeng?" asked Su Mother.
How did Ding Li's phone end up in Su Mother's hands? On the other hand, why didn't Ding Li answer the call? He replied, "Yes, it's me. Um, hello, Su Mother."
Su Mother said, "Ding Li went to the supermarket and left his phone at home."
So he really did go to the supermarket. Was Ding Li truly not interested in continuing his studies, or was he just planning to live like this? Ye Chenfeng briefly explained to Su Mother that he was looking for Ding Li but had no particular reason; he just wanted to check on her recent situation.
Su Mother responded, "That child doesn't want to study anymore. She wants to find a job. She went for an interview as a kindergarten teacher a couple of days ago but hasn't received any acceptance notice yet."
"Okay, take care of yourself, Su Mother. When Ding Li comes back, please tell her I called."
Ye Chenfeng hung up and continued to ponder who the unfamiliar number he had just dialed belonged to.
While he was deep in thought, his phone vibrated. He quickly checked it. It was a text message from the very same unfamiliar number that had just answered his call.
Opening the message revealed two words: Help me.
An unfamiliar number sending a distress message! This was the first time Ye Chenfeng encountered such a strange situation. Was someone playing a prank on him, or had something terrible really happened? Was it a kidnapping case or something else entirely?
Ye Chenfeng texted back: Who are you?
After a while, he received a reply: Don't ask who I am; just save me.
How could he save someone if he didn't even know who they were? Ye Chenfeng was frantic. He quickly sent another message: What’s your name? Where do you live? Where are you right now?
This time, Ye Chenfeng waited for a long time without receiving a response. A big question mark hung in his mind as he tried dialing that unfamiliar number once more.
Beep—beep—beep—beep.
Then, silence.
The call was automatically disconnected.
Ye Chenfeng thought that perhaps this person was truly in trouble, which is why they had sent a text for help. But without an address or a name, how could he assist them?
Forget it; he would just go to Chuanxi Bazi for hot pot.
Chuanxi Bazi was a newly opened large hot pot restaurant, specializing in a unique self-service hot pot experience.
Ye Chenfeng had been there once with Su Bei and the others and found it quite enjoyable. They had made a bet in their dormitory that whoever lost would have to go to Chuanxi Bazi for a hearty meal, and each time they returned with their stomachs stuffed to the brim.
There was still time to go now. Ye Chenfeng closed the dormitory door and ran downstairs.
He noticed some people playing basketball on the playground.
They were either freshmen or upperclassmen; he didn’t bother to look closely. He hopped on his mountain bike and headed straight for the school gate. His phone vibrated in his pocket, and he was quick to stop and pull it out.
It was a reply from the unfamiliar number; it simply read: "Help me." Just those two words. It seemed someone was indeed playing a prank on him, perhaps it was Su Bei and the Three Troublemakers. Maybe at their table, there was a beautiful girl they had met first, and this number belonged to her.
Reaching Chuanxi Bazi required riding halfway across Purple City.
Ye Chenfeng pedaled as if his bike were a windmill, enjoying the thrill of speeding. It was a perfect way to release the pressure building inside him, and his mood soared.
Purple City was known for its beautiful women—long slender legs, full breasts, and delicate, fair necks. A stunning girl glanced at him with surprise, seemingly impressed by Ye Chenfeng’s wild biking style. She took another serious look at him, but by then he had already sped far away.
Chuanxi Bazi always had great business.
A row of private cars lined the entrance, each with its own unique style and type, creating a dazzling array that was hard to take in.
A beautiful hostess greeted every customer entering and exiting Chuanxi Bazi Hotpot Restaurant with a professional smile and warm enthusiasm.
"How many, handsome?"
Ye Chenfeng replied with a smile, "I have a reservation."
The hostess beamed at him and gestured for him to follow. She quickly walked over to a service staff member, leading him inside.
As he stepped into the lobby of Chuanxi Bazi Hotpot Restaurant, an enticing aroma wafted through the air, making his mouth water. Under the glamorous lighting, food lovers of all kinds filled the space. Ye Chenfeng craned his neck to look for Su Bei and the others while a waiter beside him asked who he was looking for.
"You go ahead; I'll find them myself."
The waiter was more than happy to hear this; the hotpot restaurant was bustling, and there were no free hands available.
Su Bei, Shen Binghan, and Qin Keqing were lamenting the absence of their female friends from class who could liven up the hotpot feast when they spotted Ye Chenfeng scanning the crowd.
"Hey, Ye Chenfeng!"
Hearing the call, Su Bei's familiar smiling face emerged from among the many food enthusiasts.
Ye Chenfeng walked over, surprised not to see the beautiful women he had expected. He exchanged no unnecessary pleasantries; it was time to eat and drink.
After they had eaten their fill, Su Bei started complaining. "Ye Chenfeng, didn't you say you were going to sleep? Why are you here instead?"
Qin Keqing scooped a piece of crucian carp into Ye Chenfeng's bowl, waiting for his response.
Shen Binghan, visibly intoxicated with a face as red as Guan Gong's, shook his head and slurred, "You don't understand anything. Ye Chenfeng is just missing women. That beauty Ding Li is in the county town; he can't reach her, so he can only meet her in his dreams for some fun."
"Stop it, that's nonsense." Ye Chenfeng poured the crucian carp onto Qin Keqing's plate and waved his hand, indicating he couldn't eat anymore.
Su Bei persisted with the earlier topic, asking, "If it's not about wanting a beautiful woman, then what is it about?"
Speaking of beautiful women, Ye Chenfeng recalled the text message on his phone and hurriedly showed it to them.
After reading the message, the three of them exchanged glances, unsure of what Ye Chenfeng meant.
"You don't think I'm joking, do you?"
Qin Keqing scoffed, "If it's not a joke, then what is it?"
"Exactly."
"You want to play a riddle and make us guess if this is someone new you're trying to woo besides Ding Li?" Shen Binghan chimed in with a smug smile.
Ye Chenfeng put away his phone and said seriously, "Have you all lost your minds? How could you not consider that someone might actually be in trouble?"
Su Bei replied, "If that's the case, we need to think of something. What if the person in distress is in danger right now, and you, Ye Chenfeng, are indifferent to it? Tomorrow there could be news about a woman found dead somewhere. You'd really regret it then."
