Ye Chenfeng saw the carriage rushing from the county town to Men'er Gou, feeling the heat unbearable. Hearing the sounds of splashing and laughter by the river, he was curious about who might be there. He turned and headed straight for the riverbank, smiling as he arrived.
In the river, several men and women were bathing.
Among them was a girl about his age.
The girl wore a bikini, exposing her fair skin and developing figure, which caught his eye. An idea for a prank crossed his mind: he could dive underwater and sneak up to grab the girl's ankle to scare her.
Unbeknownst to him, this was a trap set by a water ghost to lure him into the water; there were actually no people bathing by the river. During the Ghost Festival, many spirits roamed freely, and water ghosts could manipulate drowned souls to disguise themselves as humans, enticing people to enter the river and then take their souls as substitutes.
The water ghosts acted out of necessity; with the Ghost Festival approaching, the gates of hell would soon open wide. Various spirits would emerge, and before the festival ended and the gates closed, hell's messengers would urge all spirits back to the Underworld.
If any ghost failed to take advantage of this opportunity while the Ghost Gate was wide open, they would accumulate merit and could be rewarded with a chance at reincarnation.
Ye Chenfeng's grandmother understood this best.
The water ghosts sought to blend in among the many spirits as the Ghost Gate prepared to close, hoping to return to the Underworld. If successful, they would officially enter the Ghost Path and could be listed for reincarnation.
Ye Chenfeng witnessed his own soul being taken by a water ghost, watching as his body sank. The men and girl instantly transformed back into terrifying drowned souls.
His grandmother had foreseen that Ye Chenfeng would encounter trouble; it was too late by the time she reached the riverbank.
Her hunched back seemed even more stooped, her white hair fluttering in the wind. Her aged voice was filled with sorrow as she cried out, "Heaven, don't be so cruel! He is my only grandson; give him back to me..." The river surged ominously as a grotesque figure emerged from its depths.
With each step it took, flesh fell from its body, though not as severely as before.
"Xiao Xiao..." After a piercing laugh that echoed like nails on a chalkboard, it spoke: "Old hag, always opposing me. This time your grandson has brought this upon himself; it's not my fault."
"You evil spirit! Dreaming of reincarnation? I will go down there myself and demand an explanation from Yama!" His grandmother glared at the water ghost fiercely, fingers forming incantations as she prepared to descend into the Underworld.
The water ghost, upon seeing this, did not outwardly show any signs of fear, but inwardly began to ponder.
Ye Chenfeng's Grandmother had helped many people during her time as a Medium, accumulating a great deal of merit. Yama would surely handle her case fairly, considering her good deeds. Therefore, it would be extremely difficult for the water ghost to blend in among the many Ghostly beings and descend into the Underworld, becoming lost on the Ghost Path.
The cunning water ghost's eyes darted around as it concocted a malicious scheme.
It made a demand of Ye Chenfeng's Grandmother: if she could find two fresh and tender souls of young boys and girls within a short period, it would spare Ye Chenfeng. As for everything else, it was up to her how she wanted to proceed.
Grandmother understood the Soul Borrowing Technique but had never attempted it before.
The Soul Borrowing Technique was one of the dark arts and should not be tried lightly. Anyone who attempted it would face unimaginable misfortune and divine retribution. This was an evil art that violated the natural order, and those on the righteous path shunned it, fearing for their own fates.
In her desperation to save her grandson, Ye Chenfeng's Grandmother set aside her fears.
That very day, while searching for prey outside, she encountered three lost children.
Among them, Su Bei's fate aligned perfectly with Ye Chenfeng's; using him as a substitute would be ideal for borrowing a body and reviving his soul.
Grandmother was afraid of failing and losing everything, so she decided to inform Ye Chenfeng's parents about his drowning death.
The couple was heartbroken and came to see Ye Chenfeng in person.
Grandmother assured them that she could bring Ye Chenfeng back to life in a short time, but this matter must remain confidential; not a whisper should escape their lips, or all efforts would be in vain.
Thus, Ye Chenfeng was certain that aside from his grandmother and parents, no one else knew about his drowning death.
Grandmother agreed to the water ghost's demands but first needed to offer a tribute to an Evil God.
An obscure book recorded what Evil Spirits and Evil Gods liked to consume. It mentioned that they enjoyed human fat and marrow, pus and blood, saliva, and other bodily excretions. These were not obstacles; rather, they were delicacies for Evil Spirits and Evil Gods!
Grandma was offering up human flesh, marrow, pus, blood, and saliva to the Evil Spirit Evil God!
Her kind face twisted into a grotesque expression as she muttered incantations: "I have fulfilled my promise to you. The two tender and delicious children have been delivered to you. You must honor your end of the bargain."
She affixed a talisman-like object to the mouth of the urn and exited the eerie old house, carrying a bundle of clothes to set ablaze outside. Then she returned inside, clutching a handful of talisman paper, reciting something that resembled a soul-calling spell. At that moment, Ye Chenfeng felt that the shadow trailing behind Grandma bore an uncanny resemblance to someone.
He wanted to see clearly but found himself unable to move; even the slightest motion sent waves of pain coursing through him like a thousand arrows piercing his heart.
Unable to act, he could only passively receive information transmitted from his brain by Ghostly.
Grandma walked ahead and suddenly turned around, launching a talisman paper that struck the shadow with a sharp sound—its shriek echoed before it vanished. With a cold laugh, Grandma said, "Stay in your place as a wandering spirit; don't bring trouble upon yourself."
Ye Chenfeng recognized the direction Grandma was heading—it was toward his bedroom.
He saw himself pacing anxiously inside the room and quickly pretended to lie still on the bed as he heard her approach.
Grandma was astonishingly strong; she dragged someone into the room in a reverse manner. As she chanted, a force pulled Ye Chenfeng, slowly moving him down into the body lying on the floor.
"Alright. My dear, rest for a while. When you wake up, everything will be over."
After performing her ritual, Grandma appeared exhausted as she returned to her room. Just as she lay down, her beloved Black Cat squeezed through the crack in the door and entered the bedroom.
At that moment, the capricious water ghost emerged from the Fish Tank.
The cat let out a meow, attempting to rouse the sleeping Grandma but inadvertently provoking the water ghost.
The water ghost strangled the cat and absorbed Grandma's vital energy, leading to a horrifying scene unfolding in Ye Chenfeng's mind.
In the pitch-black space, a pair of Green Glow lights abruptly appeared—
The green glow leaped towards the lifeless body of Grandma, and what happened next was etched in Ye Chenfeng's memory. He got up to see the fish tank shattered, the goldfish dead, and the cat hanging limply at the door of Grandma's bedroom, dripping a pool of crimson.
So that's how it was! I am Su Bei... I am Su Bei... Ye Chenfeng murmured almost frantically. Just then, Ding Li, who hadn't seen Ye Chenfeng for a while, grew impatient waiting outside. Fearing something might be wrong, she hurried to the bathroom, pushed against the door but couldn't budge it. Kicking it didn't work either, so she grabbed a stool to ram against it.
The bathroom door swung open, revealing Ye Chenfeng completely naked before Ding Li's eyes. She let out a shriek that jolted Ye Chenfeng from his painful reverie.
Ding Li dashed into Ye Chenfeng's bedroom, mortified by what she had just witnessed. His muscular physique and the sight between his legs were enough to make her blush furiously. She touched her burning face, covered her eyes, but the image of what she had seen was indelibly imprinted in her mind.
Ding Li's intrusion interrupted Ye Chenfeng's conflicting emotions. He stared blankly at the doorway, realizing there was still someone else in the room after hearing her scream. When he looked back at the ghostly figure he had seen earlier, it had vanished.
"Su Bei, Xiao Hong, Lin Xintao, don’t worry; I will seek justice for you," Ye Chenfeng said to the empty air as he hastily wrapped a towel around himself and rushed toward his bedroom to find Ding Li.
Inside the bedroom, Ding Li was daydreaming. Hearing footsteps, she recalled what she had just seen and felt a jolt of panic as she hurried to close the door.
Ye Chenfeng reached the door but found it wouldn't open. He pressed his hands against it and asked softly, "Lili, what did you just scream?"
Hearing Ye Chenfeng's voice confirmed it was indeed him; Ding Li quickly replied loudly, "Nothing! Ye Chenfeng, it's getting late; you should go rest."
That girl just saw me... Ye Chenfeng smirked mischievously but felt a chill creeping up his spine. Nervously turning around, he saw three figures standing behind him—Su Bei, the girl who crawled out of the urn, and a stout Lin Xintao.
"I promised I would seek justice for you all..."
"Thank you for breaking our seal. We are here to say goodbye and hope you can find a way to help us move on," Su Bei said as she glanced behind her. To their surprise, many ghostly figures stood lined up behind them.
"They are all drowned spirits; we hope you can help them too so that we can leave in peace."
"Okay," Ye Chenfeng agreed wholeheartedly but felt guilty towards Su Bei as he looked at her.
"Can you promise me one thing?" Su Bei stepped closer and smiled at Ye Chenfeng.
"Go ahead."
"My parents don't know about me. They haven't seen me alive or dead, and they're in so much pain. So I hope you can help me fulfill my filial duty."
"Of course."
Ye Chenfeng thought as long as you don't want your body back, that's fine. He still wanted to use this body to accomplish some things. First, he needed to learn what was in the Ghost-Quaking Scripture, then act heroically, exorcise demons, and make up for the wrongs his grandmother had done, ensuring her actions didn't tarnish the family's reputation.
Su Bei saw through Ye Chenfeng's thoughts and smiled silently as they both vanished into thin air.
Inside the room, Ding Li hadn't heard anything and assumed Ye Chenfeng had left. She quietly opened the door and found him facing away from her, waving his hand in another direction.
Was he crazy?
"I'm not crazy." Ye Chenfeng turned around, rushed into the room, and pulled Ding Li into a passionate kiss. He kissed her so fiercely that she almost couldn't breathe before lazily letting go with a wicked smile. "From now on, I want to cherish every day and treat you well, as well as everyone else in the world."
Ding Li was so angry that her chest rose and fell dramatically, her face flushed beautifully. She stole a glance at the bulge in his pants and felt even more embarrassed. Stammering, she said, "You should just go! I don't like sleeping together."
"It's fine; I'll be very gentle..." In truth, after everything that had happened, Ye Chenfeng wasn't in the mood for games. He needed to think about how to deal with the Cat Spirit.
If he couldn't handle it, would he really have to go into the mountains to find Shen Binghan's master? Being with Ding Li was simply about wanting to protect her. The little girl was overthinking things; as for that particular issue, it was just a completely normal physiological reaction.
