Chapter 449: Human Skin Puppet (Part Twelve)
"You weren't listening, just sitting there in a daze."
"I wasn't in a daze. I saw Juanzi run off and went to chase after him. But when I got to that Dead Zone, I encountered a Tibetan Mastiff. The black Tibetan Mastiff was attacking fiercely."
"The Divine Mastiff doesn't attack good people," Xie Shimu suddenly interjected with this strange remark.
Thank you, Master frowned, using a wick to pull the lamp's wick. He explained, "That black Tibetan Mastiff no longer exists. Many years ago, Tomb Raiders appeared in the Dead Zone. They stole corpses and took them away to sell, apparently for some Yin Hun Pei. The Tibetan Mastiffs raised by the High Monk attacked several Tomb Raiders but were killed by their weapons. Then it was worshipped by people and became the local Divine Mastiff."
Xie Shimu disregarded everyone else, his murky old eyes fixed on me, as if talking to himself but also continuing for my sake: "The Divine Mastiff won't attack good people; it’s looking at the person behind you..."
The person behind me? Instinctively feeling guilty, I turned around, only to find a wall behind me—there was no one else.
Even Ling Juan was startled by Mother Xie's words and unconsciously moved closer to me and Qin Jian.
It seemed like everyone had their own thoughts and nothing to say. Qin Jian naturally needed to rest since he had to get up early to take us back. Mother Xie, being older, had less sleep but more to say; whenever she saw strangers, she wanted to share everything she knew.
Thank you, Master had to see Old Mother off to rest.
I said to Ling Juan, "Why don't you go spend the night with Thank you, Master and Old Mama?"
At first, she refused outright. Hearing some frightening things now made her even less willing to go; her head shook like a rattle drum. With no other choice, I reluctantly stayed behind, on the condition that we both wouldn't take off our clothes.
First, I thought about laying down on the ground, but Ling Juan wouldn't agree. She was like a frightened kitten now, suspicious of everything around her and terrified that something dreadful was lurking in an unseen corner, ready to pounce at any moment. In the end, we squeezed together.
The wooden bed was truly uncomfortable; nothing happened between Ling Juan and me—just moving a little made the bed creak ominously.
In helplessness, I dared not move at all; even if I fell asleep uncomfortably, I wouldn’t dare shift an inch.
I knew Ling Juan felt the same way. We spent the night as if it lasted for years, eagerly wishing for dawn to break!
I waited anxiously, but everything remained dark. My eyelids, however, were uncontrollably heavy. I thought that after a person falls asleep, they usually don’t do anything out of the ordinary. Besides, neither of us had taken off our clothes; if something were to happen, there would still be fabric in between us!
I must have been too tired; I figured Ling Juan was probably feeling the same way.
Before I knew it, I had fallen asleep and entered a dream where I saw Mi.
She looked just like always, smiling at me while holding a child by the hand.
The child was quite adorable, and Mi was teaching him to call me "My Dad."
In this dream, I felt incredibly happy; I finally had my own child. I embraced the little one, showering him with affectionate kisses that could easily evoke jealousy in others. The entire night passed like this, enjoying familial bliss with my wife and child in my dream.
Suddenly, a sharp scream broke through the tranquility. I nervously opened my eyes to find Ling Juan—her clothes! I swallowed hard and raised my hands high: "Look at me! I haven't done anything! What's wrong with your clothes?"
As Ling Juan hurriedly put on her clothes, she shot me a quick glance. Unfortunately, her gaze landed on a certain part of me. Suddenly biting her lip, she cursed, "You... pervert..." Following her line of sight downwards, my face flushed as if scalded by fire. I quickly reached down to zip up my pants, shoving that unruly part back in. Juanzi covered her face and ran out.
I looked myself over and recalled the events of last night in detail. It was my son who had been affectionate with me; I hadn’t touched Juanzi at all. In that moment when I opened my eyes, it seemed her hand had been in the wrong place—my! We had definitely made a mistake. Whether her clothes had been removed by me was still uncertain, but her hand being there was inappropriate. Sigh! I'll chalk it up to her youthful ignorance; she didn’t know that her older brother was like dry tinder—just a light touch could ignite a fire. Thankfully, I had strong self-control and hadn’t acted improperly.
But would she go out and tell someone about this? My heart raced as I anxiously tidied up my clothes. If she really did come out and say something, no amount of explanation would suffice. Daydreaming inside wasn’t an option either; facing the situation head-on was the only way to know the outcome. After weighing my options carefully and considering everything thoroughly, I reluctantly steeled myself and stepped outside.
I expected to be met with a harsh reprimand from Qin Jian upon exiting, but instead found a table full of people eating. They laughed at me for being lazy while praising Juanzi for helping Grandma with pickling vegetables.
I noticed Juanzi’s face was flushed as she kept her head down, shoveling food into her mouth and chewing slowly. From the side view, it was hard to tell if she was angry or not; at least she hadn’t told Qin Jian about what happened last night.
Qin Jian glanced between me and Juanzi, complimenting her pickled vegetables while scrutinizing me with sharp eyes. I feigned calmness and shot him a look back; don’t stare at me—we didn’t do anything!
In reality, I was giving myself away without meaning to. Qin Jian didn’t seem suspicious; he was too busy to inquire about how well Juanzi and I slept last night. After finishing our meal and checking our bags carefully, we got back in the car for the return trip.
The atmosphere in the car was particularly heavy due to Xie Ke’s situation; sadness hung on Thank You, Master’s face while chatty Juanzi dared not speak up. The journey there felt long, but returning seemed much shorter; we quickly reached the first rest stop.
Ling Juan went to the restroom while Qin Jian and I stood together as Thank You, Master splashed cold water on his face. He looked exhausted from yawning repeatedly during the ride; trying to stay awake meant he had to wash his face with cold water over and over again.
Soon, several people got back in the car and set off again.
"Thank you, Master" washed his face and drank some water, feeling much better than before. He didn't dare to speak; I suppose no one else did either. After all, this time it was about "Xie Ke," and before the incident occurred, he had received a call from " Gousi," then went out and didn't return until midnight.
" Gousi " was dead, and "Thank you, Master" didn't know about it. "Qin Jian" was unaware of this matter, so I had no choice but to come out.
I asked, " Gousi is dead. If Xie Ke died first, it means something happened to him before Gousi. Do you know if there was any connection between them?"
"Thank you, Master" replied firmly, "I don't know."
"Then do you know someone named Chen Pi?" In my view, this matter had a lot to do with Chen Pi. First, he appeared when Xie Ke had an incident, and then Gousi's incident happened, yet Chen Pi had not shown up at all.
