Chapter 417: The Evil Spirit's Mischief 0

If it were Qin Jian, it wouldn't be so bad. The key is that I heard Chi Xinrong say he couldn't make any big moves because those bastards had been ruthless with him, breaking several bones in his body. My neck—cough—my fingers grasped the hand that was choking me, and I was shocked as if I had been electrocuted. This hand was cold, devoid of warmth. I squatted down forcefully and quickly drew a symbol in the air with that cold hand. With a swift turn, my neck was freed from its grip. I stood up straight and saw clearly who had been choking me—it was indeed Qin Jian! 0

But he wasn't himself; his eyes were wide open, his face pale, his body stiff, resembling a zombie! Was that a bit too much of a comparison? The Qin Jian before me left me momentarily stunned, and just as quickly, he once again desperately grabbed my neck. 0

I lifted my foot to kick him in the stomach, but realizing he was still injured all over, I knew that if I kicked him now, it would only add another wound. I forcibly withdrew my raised foot; I couldn't use brute strength and had to rely on my skills to deal with him. 0

He tightened his grip on my neck, baring his teeth and glaring at me. I saw his pupils—oh my god, they were terrifying! There was no black in them, and his teeth were not Qin Jian's pure teeth; they looked like the teeth of someone who had eaten filth. Damn it! How dare you mess with my buddy? I drew a symbol in the air and spat out a mouthful of blood right in his face. Unable to use my feet, I unleashed a powerful punch—bam! Don’t get me wrong; I didn’t hit him in the chest but rather in the face. A talisman emerged and firmly stuck to his forehead. 0

A surge of black energy burst forth. How could I let you escape? You’re coming in for a visit! The Eighteen Cubes are not to be trifled with; they never return empty-handed. Whoosh—the black energy didn’t even have time to scream before it was securely sucked into the Eighteen Cubes. 0

Looking back at Qin Jian, he collapsed on the ground, motionless. My heart sank as I hurried over to check for a pulse and listen for a heartbeat. Oh no, oh no! He wasn’t moving! Should I perform CPR? That thought crossed my mind as I stupidly forgot this was a hospital and leaned down to prepare for an artificial respiration sacrifice. 0

But he just had to be my buddy! If only it were a beautiful woman instead... No way! If I hesitated any longer, he might really die. I closed my eyes, pitifully lowered my head, and braced myself on the ground—just as I was about to contribute my kiss, a voice came from behind me: “What are you doing?” 0

Chi Xinrong and Brother Ma appeared simultaneously, their fierce shouts and strange glares directed at me. 0

I felt embarrassed and flustered, finally rushing to pull Chi Xinrong away while shouting that Qin Jian was in danger and needed immediate help. 0

This guy heard that Qin Jian was in danger and started crying and making a fuss about what bad thing I had done to him. 0

Now Brother Ma looked at me with suspicion; even if I had a hundred mouths, I couldn’t explain myself clearly. The Eighteen Cubes had evidence, but if I opened them up now, it would release the evil being trapped inside for so long. 0

Chi Xinrong rushed off to call for doctors and nurses while Brother Ma single-handedly lifted Qin Jian onto the bed. Everyone had something to do except for me; whether to walk or stand or sit felt awkward—I might as well have wanted to burrow into the ground. 0

The doctors and nurses arrived; after a flurry of busy yet organized treatment, they finally managed to avert disaster—Qin Jian was okay. His pulse returned to normal, and his complexion gradually improved. Standing at the door of the ward, I watched as Chi Xinrong finally calmed down after sweating profusely; with nothing else to do, I wanted to explain myself to her. 0

“Don’t explain yourself, you scum! How dare you do that to him…” 0

What the hell? Did they really think of me as glass? 0

I tried explaining to Brother Ma that what you saw earlier wasn’t what it seemed; I actually wanted to save Qin Jian. 0

Brother Ma was already on the bed—how could you save him when he ended up on the floor? Moreover, you even closed the ward door! 0

The door to my hospital room was left ajar; otherwise, you wouldn't have been able to come in so easily. Before I could even do anything to Qin Jian, you all returned. 0

Ma Ge listened to my nonsensical explanation, rolled his eyes, and no longer wanted to talk to me. The distance between us had noticeably increased. 0

Damn! I really wanted to slap myself. My explanation essentially admitted that I, Ma Qi, was being opportunistic and trying to take advantage of Qin Jian. 0

What a mess! This explanation was so unclear. What should I do? In my frustration, I looked again at Chi Xinrong for help. 0

Chi Xinrong sneered, her expression dark and stormy. 0

Anyway, Lao Qin wasn't in any real danger. When I leaned over earlier, I had placed a protective talisman on his back. No evil spirit would dare invade his weakened state. I, Ma Qi, always acted with integrity. From the doorway, it must have looked quite inappropriate when I was so close to Qin Jian with my eyes closed and lips pursed; it certainly gave off an ambiguous vibe. 0

But inside, I felt clear-headed; it wasn't as dark as they imagined. 0

Well then! Since I couldn't explain myself clearly, there was no need to waste more breath. It would be better to just leave and attend to my own matters. 0

However, just as I reached the door, Chi Xinrong called out to stop me. She angrily questioned what I meant by all this—Qin Jian was in such a state, and yet I still wanted to do something with him while trying to walk away from my own mistakes. 0

I felt something was off with Chi Xinrong's words; her gaze was complicated, and a hint of mocking smile appeared at the corners of her lips. 0

Goodness! It's hard being the good person here. 0

I wished she wouldn't act like I was some kind of enemy. 0

Finally, Chi Xinrong resumed her tasks. Ma Ge didn't say much more, but from his eyes, I could see his disdainful mockery. 0

I really didn't want to be around someone like Ma Ge. Plus, since Qin Jian hadn't woken up yet, I couldn't leave. So I told Ma Ge that if he had things to do, he should go ahead; I'd stay and keep Qin Jian company for a while longer. 0

Ma Ge gave a meaningful smile as if implying that I should spend more time with him before turning and leaving without looking back. With him gone, I could slowly explain the awkward situation that had just occurred. 0

But as soon as I stepped into the room, Chi Xinrong called for me to come back out. 0

I froze, unsure of what she meant. She brought over some hot water and gave a strange smile: "Why don't you wash him up?" 0

I was taken aback; her words were unsettling upon deeper reflection. Speechless and helpless, I stepped outside, sat upright on a chair, and took out my phone to fiddle with it. Out of boredom, I downloaded a game app. My thoughts were consumed by Qin Jian, and no matter how hard I tried, I just couldn't get the hang of the game. Frustrated and annoyed, I eventually uninstalled it, feeling utterly miserable, wishing I could just throw my phone against the wall. 0

As I sat there in a daze, the door to the hospital room opened slightly, revealing the familiar face of that troublesome girl. She still wore an expressionless face but seemed quite angry as she called out to me, "Ma Qi, he's awake." 0

I doubted my ears and repeated in disbelief, "Qin Jian is awake?" 0

"Yeah, he wants to see you." 0

With Qin Jian there to vouch for me, I thought that Chi Xinrong wouldn't continue to make things difficult for me. 0

I entered the hospital room, and Qin Jian opened his big eyes, staring at the door. When he saw me, he smiled—his smile even made his brows furrow. Just as I was about to step forward to ask how he was doing, Chi Xinrong let out a few huffs. I stopped in my tracks and smiled apologetically. "If it still hurts, don't laugh. Can you tell me what happened?" 0

Qin Jian pulled out his oxygen tube and said to Chi Xinrong, "I can breathe without this nonsense now; it's too much of a hassle." 0
