Chapter 407: Reunion with Li Mingliang
Li Mingliang went into the back room and soon came out carrying a heavy quilt that weighed at least eight pounds. Then she went back in to grab a pillow, carefully laying it on the sofa. "You can make do and rest here tonight..." After that, she disappeared into the back room again, and I assumed there was a comfortable bed in there.
Sleeping on the sofa was certainly better than the floor, so I had no reason to complain. I quickly drifted off to sleep.
Perhaps it was because I had exhausted too much energy at Gousi's place; I fell into a deep slumber without dreaming. I was jolted awake by a loud, rumbling noise that pierced through the air. As I opened my eyes, I saw someone enter, equally startled. I nervously sat up and awkwardly touched the corner of my mouth, feeling embarrassed. "I came in a hurry and didn't call you."
"It's fine, you arrived just in time. I needed to talk to you about something," Zhang Xian replied.
This time when I saw Zhang Xian, her complexion was much worse than last time. She looked like she was on the verge of collapse, as if she hadn't slept well in ages. It was the kind of look that came from severe insomnia—dark circles under her eyes, a pale face, lacking energy as she walked, and her gaze seemed unfocused.
"Xian, what happened to you?"
Zhang Xian shook her head and covered her mouth as she yawned. "Nothing much, just can't seem to sleep well."
Li Mingliang had left for the hospital at five o'clock, leaving just me and Zhang Xian in the clinic.
Zhang Xian poured some water and made tea while casually asking if I had eaten breakfast or other small talk. Suddenly, we heard the sound of police sirens outside. She glanced at me warily and slowly walked toward the door, saying, "Ma Qi, did you do something bad?"
I was speechless! It seemed I shouldn't have believed there were any good people in this world; now it appeared that not only did Zhang Xian not trust me, but she might have even called the police. The sirens grew louder as they approached, and I walked toward the door. The police arrived quickly—three cars formed a triangle around Zhang Xian Clinic.
Uniformed officers got out of their cars with serious expressions and walked toward the clinic.
I wanted to run.
"Ma Qi, don't run! Whatever it is, don't make it worse," Zhang Xian said as two police officers, one tall and one short, cautiously approached me. One held a pair of handcuffs while the other brandished a stun baton.
Fortunately, this area was newly developed, and there weren't many people around. The neighbors who spotted the police stood at a distance, whispering among themselves and pointing fingers at me. Their disdainful looks made it clear that I was in serious trouble with no way out.
At that moment, I realized that thinking about anything else was pointless. The only thing I couldn't understand was why I had come to Zhang Xian Clinic in the dead of night when no one should have seen me. Who had informed the police? Was it Zhang Xian? I glanced at her; she was huddled in the corner, visibly anxious and fearful, but her eyes genuinely showed concern for me.
Could it be Gousi who betrayed me? No way; I had always been good at reading people, and Gousi was not that kind of person. If he truly wanted to sell me out, I would have been in the police station the moment I stepped out of the villa.
Then was it Li Mingliang?
I couldn't fathom why she would report me when we had no grievances against each other. Moreover, the police arrived so quickly—could it be that the person who set me up had some connection to the police station?
With this thought, my mind cleared up significantly, as if I had unraveled a tangled mess. Perhaps going to the police station wouldn't be such a bad thing after all. After all, we lived in a society governed by law; I hadn't killed anyone, so what was there to fear?
It would just be a bit tricky explaining my presence at the hospital. After all, the police wouldn't believe in supernatural occurrences—unless it involved our special cases unit with Qin Jian. I didn't want to escalate things further; I'd have to comply this once. Besides, I wanted to find Qin Jian, which meant I had to go to the station.
"Ma Qi, right? We suspect you are connected to a murder case, so please cooperate and come with us," one officer stated plainly. It was an obvious slander; I had saved countless lives and never harbored even a hint of murderous intent.
The two officers spoke politely but their actions were anything but friendly; they were clearly ready to use force if necessary. To them, I was just a ruthless con artist—a villain.
I made no attempt to resist; instead, I extended my hands and allowed them to cuff me before they escorted me into a police car.
"This is terrifying. What on earth happened? What does that person do?"
"I don't know. I heard it's related to a murder case. Could it be a killer? He was just beside me, ah! It feels like I just walked through the Ghost Gate."
"That's Ma Qi. He's said to be a Mortician, but he's more of a con artist who swindles food and drink. He caused the death of a doctor in the hospital; it was all over the news. Don't you all know?"
Listening to the ongoing discussions, I could only chuckle.
The death of the Sha Doctor was witnessed by everyone at City Hospital. Anyone who dared to pin her death on my Ma Qi would need to provide evidence and reasons that were convincing.
With that thought, my gaze fell back on Zhang Xian Clinic.
Zhang Xian was looking at me with a complex and worried expression. Yet, in the end, she did not step out, hiding her body in the shadows, lonely and haggard.
"Li Qing, what are you looking at? Aren't you going to drive?" The police officer on my left, in his thirties, urged impatiently.
The driver in front seemed lost in thought just moments ago, but now he smiled apologetically and said, "Li Team, Zhang Deputy Captain, we're leaving now."
It was then that I realized these two well-coordinated and well-trained officers beside me were actually the captain and deputy captain of the Criminal Investigation Division and Riot Police from the precinct.
These two were quite famous in the A City Police Department; both had backgrounds as special forces soldiers and had captured countless vicious criminals over the years.
Now they were mobilized to catch me; this situation had escalated to...
But I also hadn't forgotten to probe into how the police department viewed this baseless case and who exactly reported it. As I got into the car, my eyes quickly scanned the crowd of onlookers. One pair of eyes locked onto mine for a moment before swiftly looking away.
Strange! Who is he again?
“Li Team, may I ask how you found out I was here?”
The Li Team glanced at me, merely snorting in response without answering.
Hearing this, Zhang Deputy Captain turned around and coldly retorted, “The fate of a liar is well-deserved. Don't ask too many questions. Right now, I will record your words as your testimony…” A sly smile crept onto his face as he spoke.
It was a threat, a blatant one. But once in the hands of these people, I knew there would be no good outcome. I would wait until we reached the Station to make my plans.
“Not wanting to speak is a sign of guilt.”
