Chapter 406: Evil Jade Entwined (Part Seven)
"Not much, I think this amount is already too little. If we can become good friends, that would be my greatest gain."
"I wouldn't dare. Gousi is a prominent figure in the martial world, while I am just a mere character, an inconspicuous Mortician lost in the crowd, so I wouldn't presume to associate with you."
"Ma Qi, you're being unreasonable. Are you looking down on me, Gousi?" he said angrily.
Seeing that he was genuinely upset, I smiled apologetically and replied, "No, it's not that I look down on you. I'm just a lonely person used to solitude. I did have a good friend some time ago, but because of my troubles, they got dragged into it and now I don't know how they're being tormented. So I'm hoping to find them."
"Hey, you're looking for someone?" Brother Ma said in surprise. "If you need help finding someone, just tell Gousi. He has connections in both the underworld and the righteous path."
Brother Ma's words left me stunned. If Gousi truly had connections in both realms, then he could definitely help me find Qin Jian.
Thus, I had to reconsider whether to ally with Gousi to deal with the one who was secretly causing trouble.
"Don't think too much about it. Right now, you're our benefactor. I won't treat you poorly or harm you. Although I'm a figure from the martial world, I haven't done anything to hurt anyone; otherwise, I wouldn't be worthy of calling you brother."
With such sincerity from him, how could I continue to refuse? So I recounted everything that had happened. Honestly, although I didn't know who was behind my troubles, I had a feeling that this chase was somehow related to Sha Doctor's death.
Aside from Gong Elder, it seemed like I hadn't offended anyone else.
As I spoke, everyone in the room listened intently. After finishing, Gousi asked, "You suspect that it's that surname Gong who's behind this? Do you have solid evidence or is this just your guess? You need to tell me."
Brother Ma tried several times to speak up but was stopped by Sister Zhu's gestures. I sensed he knew something but was hesitant to reveal it.
As Gousi pressed for answers, I quickly glanced at the couple before responding to him: "That's right. I, Ma Qi, believe I've done nothing wrong. But for some reason, I've been repeatedly troubled by someone in the shadows. I just hope Gousi can help me find my friend and deal with the mastermind behind this—Gong Elder—and not worry about anything else. Just let me know when you find out what I need; I'll handle it myself!"
"Don't worry; I'll definitely take care of this for you," Gousi assured me without hesitation. After a moment of thought, he asked again, "Since it's inconvenient for you to show yourself right now, do you need me to help you find a place to hide for a while? You could stay here; I can guarantee that not many would dare come looking for you."
I couldn't help but smile wryly. Once Gousi considered someone a friend, he truly treated them as family. However, at this point, I couldn't just sit back and do nothing; I needed to take action as well. My next step would be to go hide at Zhang Xian Clinic for a while.
I assured Gousi and smiled at Ma Ge and Zhu Jie, "No need for that. I have a place to go. Once you find out anything, just pass the message along, Gousi."
Gousi nodded with a smile, insisting that Ma Ge drive me to my destination and personally see me to the villa's entrance. Even after we had walked quite a distance, I could still see them standing together, watching me leave, which touched me deeply.
"Master Ma, quite impressive! Truly a master hidden among the crowd," Ma Ge remarked with a chuckle. His words made me feel a bit sour.
There was little conversation between us as I closed my eyes to rest during the ride. It was better not to say too much to someone I didn't know well; one wrong word could lead to dire consequences.
Before long, we arrived at our destination, Beishi Road Xian Clinic.
After getting out of the car, I didn’t say anything to Ma Ge; I simply waved goodbye and focused on the clinic in front of me.
In the dead of night, the only thing accompanying the cold wind was more cold wind. No ghost would linger on such a desolate road, let alone any living person. It truly felt like an inopportune time for me to be here. The clinic's door stared back at me coldly; without a key to open it, I had no idea if anyone was inside keeping watch. All I could do was huddle under the eaves like a beggar waiting pitifully for dawn.
A sudden clatter startled me so much that I nearly jumped up. Turning quickly, I saw that the door had opened at some point, revealing a woman dressed entirely in black standing silently by the entrance.
Her dark clothing blended into the dim light of the clinic, making it hard to see her expression or features clearly. All I could make out were her eyes, which moved restlessly in their sockets, and her sickly pale face. I crouched down because I was utterly exhausted from my time at Gousi's house; it took me a couple of seconds before I straightened up.
"You are..."
Her voice sounded so familiar! I racked my brain trying to remember where I'd heard it before when suddenly it hit me like a flash of inspiration. Excitedly, I called out a name.
"Li Mingliang?"
"It’s me! Who are you?" It seemed she didn’t remember me well; she had forgotten about that night when someone had dragged her drunken self off to the countryside. I chuckled and said, "Aunt Li, it's Ma Qi."
What followed was a dramatic scene: Li Mingliang genuinely couldn’t recall my name. However, upon hearing it, she warmly invited me inside and explained that she was working part-time—doing odd jobs at the hospital during the day and coming here to Zhang Xian at night to keep watch for extra money.
Earlier, Li Mingliang had told me she was single, which I hadn’t believed at first. Now it seemed she really was alone. Why would someone single work so hard? I felt she needed care—especially male attention.
"Don't get me wrong, my man, it's not me. In her eyes, I'm just a child. Seeing her pale face light up with a rare smile because of my presence, she quickly brought me a steaming bowl of noodles topped with a fried egg.
I could wolf down the entire bowl in one go, then let out a satisfied burp and pull out a tissue to wipe my mouth.
Li Mingliang pointed to the ground with keen eyes. 'You dropped something.' I looked down and saw a card—it was the one Gousi had given me. I had refused it, so I was puzzled as to how it ended up in my bag.
I chuckled silently, picked it up, and without even glancing at it, casually stuffed it back into my bag.
'Are you here to find Xian?'
When Li Mingliang mentioned Xian, I wasn't sure if I was mistaken or if something else was going on, but I noticed a fleeting complexity in her gaze.
'Yeah.' I checked my phone; it was three in the morning. Estimating how much longer I could sleep, I started to feel drowsy, yawning while looking around."
