Chapter 9: The Unrighteous
Elder Gong squinted, his expression darkening instantly as he asked in a low voice, "What did she do?"
"Many years ago, she sold newborns. Now, she is using her position to forge cases of infant deaths, actually using the newborns to create longevity supplements for you. If you don't believe me, there is evidence to support this."
Upon hearing this, Elder Gong shuddered as if struck by lightning. He slowly turned to look at me, his face extremely grim. Then, with great effort, he took a few steps toward the intensive care unit before stopping again. Without turning back to look at me, he spoke in a deep tone, "Ma Qi, no one knows my wife's character better than I do. Don't think that just because I need something from you now, you can slander her with baseless accusations. She would never commit such a heinous act." After finishing his words, he walked away without looking back.
I was left standing there in a daze for a while before heading off to find Qin Jian.
It seemed that Elder Gong shared the same sentiment as Doctor Sha; he was unwilling to cooperate with me. I thought that if he did cooperate and I uncovered the real reason behind this, perhaps I could help those poor souls find peace. Now it seemed my thoughts were in vain, leaving me feeling frustrated.
As I walked on, the thought that I had almost become one of those dead infants in a plastic barrel weighed heavily on my mind. The intensive care unit was empty—strange, right? There was no sign of Qin Jian or any other family members. When I asked a nurse, she informed me that Doctor Sha had failed to save the patient.
Elder Gong had taken the body away directly.
I tried calling Qin Jian, but his phone was off. I called Chi Xinrong, but her line was busy.
With no other options, I went to Li Luwen's ward and saw a nurse tidying up the bed.
"How is Li Luwen doing?" I asked.
"She has gone home; Director Zhi took her back."
So Chi Xinrong's phone being unreachable meant she had taken Li Luwen home.
Li Luwen's home was far away, in a remote area with poor communication facilities and weak signals; it was likely impossible to reach her. I went to find Zhang Xian; she was just leaving her office with a bag on her back. She didn't seem like she was off work; rather, it looked like she was going on a trip.
Traveling wasn't an option for her; she told me, "I resigned."
"Why are you resigning?"
"Seeing the scene brings back memories. Sha Doctor is dead, and I saw how she died. It scared me, really."
"What are you afraid of?" I suddenly felt like smoking and walked with her toward the hospital entrance.
Across the street from the hospital was Store. The owner of Store was that woman who used to guard the cars. She's doing well now; her family received compensation from a demolition, so she quit the hard work of guarding cars and opened Store.
"Nothing much, just a little scared."
Seeing Zhang Xian getting ready to drive, I said, "Wait for me; I want to hitch a ride with you."
"Sure." Zhang Xian waited for me.
I went into Store, and since everyone was familiar, it was inevitable that we would exchange a few jokes. The owner was still as talkative as ever. She said, "Ma Qi, we became friends without even realizing it. In the past, I thought you were just a con artist who tricked people into eating and drinking. I didn't expect you to actually have skills. Look at everything I have now; it’s all related to meeting you. You're my benefactor, so this pack of cigarettes is on me."
"No way, no way! You have to take the money; we’re still friends from now on."
"Alright, I'll accept it. From now on, let's call each other brother and sister, okay?" Seeing her sincerity reminded me of that woman who had also been generous and treated me like family, calling me brother and sister. I shook my head, took a few steps back, waved goodbye, and ran toward Zhang Xian's car.
Zhang Xian noticed me laughing with the owner of Store and curiously asked, "What's your relationship with her?"
As I got into the car, I saw the owner still staring in our direction. Maybe I was overthinking it; she was just a businesswoman looking around. Turning back, I finally answered Zhang Xian's question: "Nothing much; just a friend I got to know without any fighting."
"You’re really something; you can become friends with anyone."
"Sigh, the more friends I have, the more trouble there is."
"Indeed."
"You've resigned. What are you planning to do next?"
Zhang Xian smiled slightly, "I want to open a clinic and continue my old profession."
I was taken aback; I hadn't expected that. Zhang Xian is a doctor with considerable clinical experience, so opening a clinic would be a good choice. However, for some reason, I associated her with Lin Tai's mother. I hoped she wouldn't follow in their footsteps and become someone who acts against conscience and morality.
Zhang Xian, being a doctor, could read emotions better than a fortune teller. Perhaps sensing my unease, she asked, "What are you worried about?"
I didn't answer her question but instead asked, "What are you afraid of?"
"Sadness for the fallen rabbit and sympathy for its kind."
"Xian, aren't you curious about why I came to see you?"
"Who are you, Ma Dada? If there was something you couldn't hide, you'd have told me already!"
I chuckled and pointed at her, "You... alright! Back to the point. Can you tell me something about Sha Doctor? Like what happens in the operating room? Have you collaborated with her?"
"Ma Dada, you might be disappointed with my answer. First of all, I'm not partnered with Sha Doctor. She's a qualified senior doctor who rarely enters the operating room anymore. Generally, if she needs something done, her assistants can handle it all. We have no connection; you're not unaware of the rivalries between departments, so don't expect to gather any information from me."
"Sha Doctor died due to the entanglement with Infant Ghost..."
At this sudden revelation, I could see Zhang Xian shuddering slightly. She slammed on the brakes; thankfully, we were still able to stop here. She stared at me in shock as if I were a stranger. After a moment of regaining her composure, she patted her chest and said, "What do you mean by that?"
"I have a special ability that allows me to see those things. I can hold onto their heads and wrap my arms around their waists, feeling their claws digging deep into their cerebral cortex while witnessing their death."
"Goodbye... please, just stop..." Zhang Xian suddenly lost control of her emotions, burying her head beneath the steering wheel, her hands and even her whole body trembling.
I sat upright, unsure of what to do; I didn't expect her to react this way to what had happened.
Finally, Zhang Xian issued an eviction order: "You should get out!"
"Alright, but before I leave the car, I want to give you this. If you trust me, keep it on you; it can ensure your temporary safety."
Zhang Xian took it and watched as I opened the door. Just as I was about to close it, she suddenly said, "Wait."
Looking at Zhang Xian again, I noticed her eyes were red and her complexion was terrible. She took a deep breath, as if trying to balance her emotions, and then brushed her bangs aside. "Ma Qi, is the matter with Li Luwen not over yet? Isn't she fine now? Why are there still problems?"
"This has nothing to do with Li Luwen. The burdens accumulated by Doctor Sha are too heavy and numerous. This is just a precaution for you. As for the Li Luwen incident and those who have suffered misfortune, including Li Luwen's mother, I will find a way to help them find peace."
