Chapter 91
The door of Li Mingliang's house was locked with a large iron padlock, and it was unclear where she had gone. There was no one passing by, so we had no choice but to leave our bicycles by her door and drive away.
"Who is she? How do you know her?" Qin Jian finally opened the floodgates of curiosity and asked.
"Li Mingliang, from Yihe Village. She wanted to see me because she misses her deceased daughter. I heard her daughter went to study in Japan..." A jolt interrupted my sentence before I could finish.
Qin Jian replied, "That's nice. I wanted to visit Japan a long time ago."
"She’s dead."
"Damn, you left me hanging!"
"Lao Qin, listen. Right now, my biggest wish is to sleep. Can you let me get some rest before we talk about anything else?"
"Go ahead and sleep!" Qin Jian, being a good buddy, understood me. If I didn’t get enough sleep, I wouldn’t be able to handle anything properly. So, sleeping was crucial.
I really fell asleep.
But it didn’t feel good.
A blurry figure kept swaying in front of me. She had something to say, and her whole body was drenched in blood. I sniffed and deliberately moved a bit, trying to shake off this shadow. But it felt like she was right beside me; I could really smell the pungent scent of blood.
Then I opened my eyes and saw that there was indeed a girl covered in blood sitting next to me. She grabbed my hand tightly and said, "Help me..."
"Damn..." I shouted, opening my eyes wide, while Qin Jian looked at me in confusion.
"Who are you cursing at?"
"Just dreaming." It was true; that dream felt so real, and my arm ached slightly. But the dream and reality were clearly different. I was sitting in the passenger seat, so how could that woman possibly be next to me? I couldn't help but roll up my sleeve to check. The thin down jacket made it easy to do so, but as I rolled it up, I froze in shock.
There were five bloody scratches on my arm, but under my gaze, they quickly faded beneath my skin and disappeared. It was horrifying and bizarre how they vanished. I rubbed at them vigorously, but still saw no trace of the scratches.
"Cold? Do you want me to turn on the air conditioning?" Qin Jian asked.
I squinted at him. "No need." I felt a surge of resentment towards Qin Jian. If it weren't for his girlfriend throwing a fit last night, I wouldn't be this irritated. I hadn't slept all night and had been left dizzy by that Li Mingliang. That Li Mingliang was truly strange. How did she know me? She seemed to know a lot about me. Wanting to see her daughter while knowing full well that her daughter was already dead—meeting was impossible; she could only sense some things. What was odd was that her daughter's statue was there, yet it had no trace of Spirit Energy at all. And that box of Wontons? It was something her daughter bought for her roommate.
Who was her daughter's roommate? This question led me back to the Blood Dumpling from my dream, where Zhang Xian ate it. She had no connection to Li Mingliang whatsoever. Had I, Baymax, experienced too much and coincidentally had such a nonsensical nightmare? Ugh! Just thinking about it gave me a headache. Forget it; no need to think too much—better get some sleep.
I hugged my arms and tried to sleep again!
In a daze, I felt myself sinking into slumber while my consciousness remained alert. The fleeting sounds of car horns, the bustling noise of the city, and Qin Jian's cough all reached my ears. I drifted in and out of sleep until the car finally stopped.
"Are we there?"
"Yeah." Qin Jian got out of the car. I followed suit only to realize we weren't at Gong Elder's house but at City Hospital.
"Doctor Sha has been admitted to the intensive care unit and is currently undergoing emergency treatment. You should go take a look."
"No way! Why do I feel like I have some deep-seated grudge against this hospital? Countless times I've come here, countless times I've left—leave and come back, come back and leave."
"What are you talking about? Hurry up!"
I shook my head and let out a deep breath, following Qin Jian's large footsteps down the corridor leading to the intensive care unit. We hurried along, and upon reaching the ICU, I saw quite a few people gathered at the entrance. Among them were colleagues of Doctor Sha, as well as relatives and friends of their family. Elder Gong looked haggard, sitting in a chair with his hands clasped over his head, while a relative beside him offered comfort.
I walked up to Elder Gong with Qin Jian and stood in front of him. The first thing he noticed were our leather shoes, and then he slowly lifted his head.
After just one night, the elder had become gaunt, his eyes bloodshot. Upon seeing me, he stood up in shock as if he had seen a lifeline, gripping my hands tightly. "Ma Qi, right? You’re here. I need to talk to you about something." I could feel his hands trembling; even as he spoke, his lips quivered, and his whole body shook.
Whether it was fear or something else, I couldn't tell at that moment.
I glanced at Qin Jian; he gestured for me to follow Elder Gong.
Elder Gong led me to a secluded spot; this part of the hospital was the quietest. The ICU was a critical place between life and death—if someone was saved, they lived; if not, they died. This corridor led directly to the elevator for the mortuary.
Elder Gong seemed either unaware of this corridor or was simply acting out of urgency; he stopped here.
"I need you, Ma Qi. Last night when you left, my wife locked herself in the room and started screaming inside. I couldn't get in and was frantic. Then it went quiet—so quiet. I dozed off on a bench for a bit, but then I heard her screaming again. I grabbed a stool and broke down the door... She was found pressed against the wall, covered in blood... I've worked cases before and witnessed many bizarre deaths, so I have this terrible feeling—has she been entangled by something?"
"Gong, to be honest with you, this matter is strange. When you and Qin Jian went to your room, I mentioned this to Doctor Sha; she didn't believe me and refused to cooperate. So now it's serious."
"You can ask me anything; I'll tell you everything. Can we save her?"
I shook my head. "I'm afraid it's too late, Gong. Since you've seen so many bizarre death cases, I'll be straightforward: there’s a heavy Evil Energy surrounding you. I'm not sure if it’s related to Doctor Sha's situation."
Elder Gong gulped nervously, pointing at himself with wide eyes that revealed bloodshot sclerae. "Is it me?"
"Yes," I nodded and continued, "What I want to know is about your health practices—what do you usually eat for wellness? And how old are you really?"
"I'm sixty-eight. Can't you tell?"
"I can't tell. You look good now, but that's just on the surface. In reality, your body is being eroded by an unknown Evil Energy. To be honest, when I first saw you, I thought you were only in your forties."
Upon hearing this, Gong Elder's expression changed dramatically. He slowly lifted his head to look far away, towards the elevator where the bodies were taken.
"I also think there's something wrong. The remedies she found for me are supposed to prolong life. She regularly brings back these tonics for me. Honestly, they make me feel nauseous and annoyed. If I hadn't thought that I could live better than ordinary people, becoming more energetic and potentially living thirty more years, I would have refused to take the tonics she brought home."
"Did you see with your own eyes what these tonics are made of? What is their source?"
"I don't know. She seems very mysterious. She takes the tonics home and makes them into pills, even forcing me to eat ten at a time. I was already in bad shape, but after her torment, I somehow recovered completely, even stronger than before. My wife is also taking them..."
"Gong, if I told you that Sha Doctor has done something unethical and immoral, something sinful, how would you react?"
