Chapter 60: Fateful Path (Part Nineteen)
"I understand, you're staying at Hua Lu for now. I'll be right back."
As I was about to leave, Qin Jian urgently asked, "What did you see just now?"
"Wait a moment." I had already realized that while most magical tools are lethal to the dead, the Demonic Needle is an exception. It can also affect living beings tainted by Evil Energy. If I delay even for a moment, Han Lan's life will be in grave danger.
The Demonic Needle strikes evil entities, turning them to ashes, and when it hits an Evil Sorcerer, it travels through their blood directly to the heart until the Evil Energy is purged. However, the consequence of clearing the heart's Evil Energy is death. Yet, a highly skilled Evil Sorcerer would not suffer fatal damage; for instance, when Li Gui was attacked by the Demonic Needle, he only lost some of his cultivation. He foolishly attempted to kill me to absorb my energy for revenge but ultimately failed and died.
The only reason Han Lan was attacked by the Demonic Needle is that she understands Evil Arts but not very well.
I spotted someone hurrying towards me, regardless of gender, and I asked everyone I encountered, "Where is Han Lan?" Those who knew paused to give me a detailed scan before pointing me in a direction. I followed their indications.
After winding through several corridors, I reached the lounge and asked another person, only to find out that Han Lan had not come to the lounge.
If she wasn't in the lounge, where could she be?
I searched all around the mortuary but found no trace of her. The speed of the Demonic Needle is terrifying; if it isn't stopped in time, it leads only to death. But I couldn't bear the thought of Han Lan dying like this; I had to find her and clarify everything.
If Han Lan didn't understand Evil Arts, I wouldn't have linked her to Mi's death. Now that I realized she had some knowledge in this area, it meant one thing: her drunken words were true. There was also another possibility—Han Lan might have been trying to get close to me not out of simple affection but with ulterior motives.
Han Lan must be suffering greatly right now; the Demonic Needle would cause unbearable pain as it coursed through her body. The excruciating agony would be too much for her unless her entire body was frozen. Once frozen, the Demonic Needle would cease its movement.
Frozen!
The mortuary has ice.
I dashed toward the Morgue when Qin Jian suddenly appeared behind me and shouted, "Ma Qi!"
"Yes?"
"Something major has happened; Sha Hong is in trouble." Qin Jian shook his phone vigorously at me.
"This is just great... What should I do?" If I abandon my pursuit of Han Lan now, there's a high chance she could be rescued by an Evil Sorcerer lurking in the shadows. But if I don't investigate Sha Hong's situation, Qin Jian will be upset. Seeing my hesitation, Qin Jian rushed over to me.
"What’s going on with you?"
"Lao Qin, I can’t explain it clearly right now. Why don’t you go to Sha Hong? I’ll handle this urgent matter and join you as soon as I can."
"Boss, this bizarre case at the Station has been assigned to us. Do you want to hear the boss's call again?"
"I know, but Lao Qin, please help me out. I really need to take care of this. I’m sorry…" I clasped my fists and turned to leave, leaving Qin Jian staring blankly at my retreating figure. Am I being a bit selfish? Ignoring him and rushing off to find Han Lan.
The Mortuary was right in front of me, and I couldn’t believe that Qin Jian hadn’t left but had followed me here.
"Lao Qin, you…"
"Forget it, we’re partners. We share everything."
"You think I’d be moved by that?" I tilted my head and smirked at him.
"What else? After this, treat me to a meal?"
I made a gesture indicating 'okay': "That’s possible, but do you have a way to open this door?"
"I figured you were heading to the Mortuary, so I didn’t bother asking you for the key." Qin Jian handed me the key. I smiled calmly, unlocked the door, and a rush of cold air hit us. He asked, "Are you sure you want to go in?"
I nodded in response: "Yeah."
The Mortuary wasn’t just a single Morgue; it housed many bodies, like a hotel for the dead, all numbered. Qin Jian and I checked each one systematically, starting with the bodies in the Coroner's Van, then moving on to the Freezer Drawer and Freezer.
We uncovered white sheets one by one, revealing cold, stiff faces before us. We quickly examined most of the bodies in the Coroner's Van. Three remained; after checking these three, we would have to look at the Freezer Drawer.
Typically, bodies in the Freezer Drawer were those that hadn’t been cremated for a long time. The corpses inside were as hard as stone—definitely not a place for Han Lan unless she truly wanted to die. Only the Coroner's Van had a temperature that wouldn’t drop below that of the Freezer Drawer. So as long as she could lower her body temperature to human levels, the Demonic Needle would slow its movement.
That’s why I was certain Han Lan could only hide in the Coroner's Van; there was no other option.
To prevent Han Lan from escaping through the door, I set up a barrier at the entrance, waiting to catch her before lifting it. Before setting up the barrier, I prayed for all those stored here: it wasn’t my intention to target you; my aim is someone who fundamentally doesn’t deserve to be called human.
I kept a close watch on the three Coroner's Vans as I and Qin Jian surrounded them, moving stealthily to keep them within our control range.
The first van I opened did not contain Han Lan. I quickly turned my attention to the second one, while Qin Jian opened another. Only the last van remained, and an inexplicable tension gripped my heart, pounding wildly in my chest.
Qin Jian lifted the white corpse cover, and with a swift motion, it was thrown back. Han Lan lay there, her face pale and severely decayed, her eyes filled with resentment as she cursed fiercely, "You are too much! Do you want to wipe me out completely?" As she spoke, she made a sweeping motion in the air. I dodged nimbly and coldly retorted, "The Demonic Needle is inside you. As long as your body temperature returns and you use your internal energy, it will rush toward your heart at ten times the speed. The closer you get to death, the more imminent it becomes."
"Ah... no... it's impossible! Master, I won't die..." Perhaps as she exerted herself to attack us, the Demonic Needle stirred again. She let out a terrible scream and crouched down, curling into a ball in agony.
If I just stood by and watched her suffer without intervening, it was certain she would die within minutes.
Qin Jian grew anxious and said, "Lao Qi, we can't let her die."
"Uh..." My teeth clenched in frustration; I wished I could tear off Han Lan's skin to expose her heart that had lost its humanity. However, I couldn't act impulsively. I began chanting a spell while forming hand seals and struck her on the head. As I exerted my power, a surge of heat exceeded normal human body temperature. The Demonic Needle swiftly exited her body with a whoosh as I retrieved it. Han Lan collapsed onto the ground, limp and defeated.
