Chapter 40: The Search for the Missing (Part Seven)
Seeing Mo helping the old lady out, Zhang Wang and Qin Jian stepped forward to take over. I hurriedly adjusted the pouch around the child's neck before carrying him over to Mo.
“He's very well-behaved,” I said as I handed the child to Mo.
Mo took him, sweat glistening on his forehead, looking exhausted. “She collapsed in the bathroom, foaming at the mouth, repeatedly saying she wanted to die.”
“Understood.” I nodded and went to check on Zhang Wang's mother.
The elderly woman indeed looked unwell; her face was ashen, and her hair was damp as if she had been submerged in water. It was sweat, and her clothes were also soaked. Together, the three of us managed to get her into the car. We then asked around for a hospital with better facilities nearby, and someone suggested calling an ambulance.
Zhang Wang immediately pulled out his phone and dialed for an ambulance.
Qin Jian and I couldn’t stop him; if something happened, we would be blamed for being superstitious and causing harm. Personally, I didn’t have much to lose, but it was crucial to consider Qin Jian’s situation now that he had Chi Xinrong as a girlfriend.
Before the ambulance arrived, I walked over to Zhang Wang's mother. “Don’t think about it; just forget.”
“Master Ma, what exactly is wrong with my mom?” Zhang Wang looked at me, then at Mo, finally pushing Mo aside to speak.
“If you can remove the item from the child's neck, your mother will be saved,” Zhang Wang said, glancing suspiciously at Mo and then at the child, still confused. I urged him, “Just try listening to me this time, but you mustn’t let Mo get suspicious.”
“Alright, I'll give it a shot.”
The ambulance arrived quickly. Zhang Wang was going to drive; only Mo, the child, and I accompanied Qin Jian to the hospital. Fearing that I might impulsively remove the item from the child's neck and raise Mo's suspicions, I decided to let Zhang Wang drive while I took his car with Qin Jian to rush to the hospital.
As soon as this suggestion was made, everyone agreed immediately.
So Mo took the child along with me and Qin Jian in one vehicle while Zhang Wang rode with his mother in the ambulance.
On our way to the hospital, Mo remained silent, staring blankly out of the window. The child babbled away, seemingly teething as drool occasionally dribbled from his mouth. When Mo noticed this, she wiped it clean with a tissue before returning to her daze.
"Mo, who else is in your family?" I was just making small talk, trying to draw her attention away from the car window. I wanted her to think about the elderly person still struggling and suffering.
"I have a younger brother, and both my parents are well. They're all good."
"Oh. This child looks just like you; if you don't look closely, you might think he's a girl."
"Thank you, many people say that." When it came to her child, Mo's indifferent face softened into a slight smile, and her eyes sparkled with life.
The greatness of maternal love.
"Mo, what’s your child's name?"
"Zhang Baoquan."
"That's a nice name." I said it sounded nice, but in my heart, I thought it was really quite plain. I wasn't trying to get close; I couldn't care less about complimenting someone's name. It had nothing to do with me whether they named their child something fancy or not.
"Master Ma, can you tell fortunes?"
"I can. Whose fortune do you want to tell?"
"Baoquan's." She deliberately lifted the child high, and he let out a series of giggles. A droplet of saliva dangled from his mouth and finally fell onto the mask under his chin.
"What do you want to know?"
Upon hearing my question, Mo suddenly became heavy-hearted. She continued to play with the child, lifting him high without saying a word.
I reminded her, "In the car, don't do that..."
"Baoquan is destined for misfortune; he shouldn't have been born into my family. The fortune teller told me his life would be short unless..."
"Unless what?"
"Unless a life is exchanged for a life." Mo's expression was grim, his face pale, and his eyes dim.
"What do you mean by a life for a life? Tell me."
Mo's face turned even paler, and with a dark gaze, he looked up at me, each word dripping with resentment: "She must die."
The "she" in Mo's words referred to Zhang Wang's Mother.
"Mo. Listen to me, things aren't that serious yet; it's not beyond saving. Didn't you ask me to read your child's fortune? I'll do it for you, and if you don't like what I say, I won't take a single penny from you."
When it comes to money, some people want me to be a fraud and cheat them out of it.
Perhaps some are unaware of the rules in the fortune-telling circle.
Generally, good fortunes require a certain fee. The so-called good fortune still relies on one's own efforts; those who think they can determine their fate through fortune-telling are truly foolish.
In truth, street fortune-tellers are the real frauds, primarily focused on scamming money. I'm not one of them; I'm not here to cheat anyone. Those who truly understand the Mystical Arts don't rely on mere words; they rely on intuition, keen observation, and listening carefully. It's all about perceiving the subtleties that others miss!
"You can read well; you'll definitely earn quite a bit. Go ahead!" I noticed that when it comes to their children, mothers would go to any lengths to try to change something.
"Okay, I'm driving and can't focus on two things at once, but I'll do my best. For now, just remember what I say."
"Alright." Mo seemed worried that I couldn't see the child clearly. He shifted the child from his right leg to his left and stopped looking out the window, focusing instead on the child as he patiently awaited my words.
"The name Baoquan is well chosen. When I held him earlier, I observed closely, so now I can deduce a thing or two without needing to look again. First, let's examine his facial features. The face is divided into three parts: the upper court, which is the forehead; the middle court includes the eyes, nose, and cheekbones; and the lower court consists of the jawline, chin, and mouth. Looking at his upper court, it is full and round—this signifies great wealth and nobility. The middle court has a straight nose and large expressive eyes with prominent cheekbones—this indicates longevity. As for the lower court—regardless of how you look at him—he possesses the appearance of a dragon among men; he will surely become a pillar of the nation in the future. However, this is contingent upon him receiving a strong educational foundation; do not indulge him or stray from his destined path."
Upon hearing my lengthy explanation, Mo was taken aback, his beautiful eyes wide with shock. Then, as if in disbelief, he scrutinized the child closely and murmured softly, "You are completely different from him."
"Sure, one of us must be lying," I chuckled, adding, "That depends on your judgment. I'm not one to pick and choose; I just speak the truth. Don't you know your own child?"
With my words, Mo's doubts vanished, replaced by a smile and a look of reverence directed at me. "You're right; I almost fell for it. I need to show you something." Without waiting for my consent, she hurriedly removed something from the child's neck.
Seeing her do this made my heart race with excitement, and I couldn't help but smirk with a sense of accomplishment. As she wanted to show me what she had, I realized I needed to pull over first.
The car veered off the main road and onto the emergency lane, and Qin Jian followed suit.
I parked the car and took the item Mo handed me. She had already opened it eagerly. Inside was a piece of finger bone and a Soul Devouring Talisman—this was a common tactic used by Evil Sorcerers to control children for their own sinister purposes.
"And there's this," Mo said, rummaging through her bag to pull out a piece of paper that contained someone's Ba Zi.
I was taken aback. "Is this your mother-in-law's Ba Zi?"
