Chapter 15: The Yellow Weasel's Marriage
Shen Shoucai was violently slammed against the wall. When he looked at the bride again, she remained motionless, seemingly asleep. His heart sank; the bride wasn't sleeping—she had been placed under a soul-binding spell.
Just as Shen Shoucai was preparing to cause trouble for the second time, a long, furry creature that resembled a large cat with golden fur appeared before him.
The creature was sinister; it darted forward and transformed into a handsome young man.
The young man glared at Shen Shoucai and said angrily, "Get lost! This is my mistress; do not disturb her."
Hearing this made Shen Shoucai chuckle. After waiting for so long without seeing Dengke Qi, they were instead greeted by the Yellow Weasel.
"Boss, that girl is a virgin. It would be a shame for her to end up with the Yellow Weasel; why not let me have her instead?"
"That depends on whether the girl is willing."
"True. But if I save her, who knows if she might offer herself to me?" Shen Shoucai grinned, suddenly interested in rescuing the girl.
Immediately, he and Shen Shoucai divided their tasks.
Shen Shoucai moved ahead to open the door for me. While the Yellow Weasel, the groom, had not yet arrived, we hid inside the bride's room. It was eight o'clock at night, and autumn had already darkened the sky. The town was nothing like a big city; after all, there weren't many young people who enjoyed nightlife. Those who did were often kept in check by their parents and dared not venture out openly.
Thus, after nightfall, the streets became quiet, with only an occasional car rushing home without leaving a trace of clouds behind.
Without disturbing anyone, Shen Shoucai and I successfully sneaked into the Host Family's residence and hid in the bride's room. However, we had to conceal our presence with Breath-Holding Talismans affixed to our bodies.
Under the light, the bride was indeed beautiful; no wonder Shen Shoucai was smitten.
Before long, there was movement at the door; someone seemed to have arrived. Suddenly, an enchanting fragrance wafted into the room as a dashing young man stepped through the entrance.
Following the handsome youth was another boy; Shen Shoucai indicated that this was the Yellow Weasel who had come earlier to scout.
Seeing that the main character had arrived, Shen Shoucai hurriedly wanted to reveal himself. I stopped him and urged him to be patient.
The handsome youth entered and first bowed to the bride. "My dear wife, I have kept you waiting. I will now cure your ailment." As he spoke, he clenched his fists and inhaled deeply before expelling a bright red pearl into the bride's mouth.
This was it—the very pearl that had ensnared the girl’s spirit. The girl opened her eyes in shock and gasped for breath, but before she could scream, the handsome youth lunged at her with lightning speed. Realizing this was my chance, I activated Eighteen Cubes, unleashing a dazzling array of light that enveloped the handsome youth.
The beautiful youth suddenly transformed into a massive Yellow Weasel, frantically jumping around but unable to escape the golden light that enveloped him.
Another boy, witnessing this, hurriedly tried to flee but was already caught by Shen Shoucai.
I stood with my hands behind my back in front of the beautiful youth and sneered, "You've become a spirit, reached a certain level, yet instead of doing good deeds and cultivating yourself, you come to the human world to disrupt the peace, bullying men and women alike. What punishment do you deserve for this?"
"Who are you? We have no grievances or enmities; why meddle in my affairs?"
"This is my business to meddle in. She is human, and you are a beast. How could a human and a beast possibly match? If you know what's good for you, honestly tell me where your lair is, and I'll take care of you."
"Please spare me! I didn't recognize your greatness. If you let me go, I will cultivate and do good deeds as is natural."
Yellow Weasels are quite spiritual beings. Back in my grandfather's time, he had plenty of dealings with them. In our neighborhood, there was a vendor known as Huang Yazi, famous for selling marinated ducks. He had an old mother whom we all called Grandma Huang.
Grandma Huang's son sold ducks, but she wasn't very kind to people; she stirred up trouble and harmed countless individuals. I don't know how she ended up provoking a Yellow Weasel, but eventually someone came to tell my grandfather that Huang Yazi's mother was dancing in the street while hugging a man.
My grandfather immediately rushed over to see.
Sure enough, he found Huang Yazi's mother dancing in the street, performing an awkward belly dance.
Her belly jiggled as she moved, displaying all sorts of embarrassing antics. Huang Yazi tried desperately to pull her away but couldn't. Not only was she dancing, but she also hugged a man and kissed him. My grandfather approached just in time to almost be caught in her embrace. It left him feeling quite embarrassed, and finally he said, "It's the Yellow Weasel messing with your mother; you should check other places carefully."
As it turned out, upon investigation, they really did find a Yellow Weasel dancing the belly dance and posing for hugs. Fortunately, they discovered it early enough that they managed to drive the Yellow Weasel away. Huang Yazi's mother let out a loud cry and collapsed on the ground. After a long while, she woke up feeling exhausted, unable to remember anything else.
So when it comes to beings like the Yellow Weasel, I wouldn't want to offend them unnecessarily. As long as they show signs of repentance and reform, I won't escalate matters further; one should spare others when possible. Thus, I decided to let it go.
The girl was saved and expressed her immense gratitude towards me; she was almost ready to offer herself in return. I said, "Don't thank me; the one you should be grateful to is him..."
Shen Shoucai appeared and nearly scared the girl into fainting again.
"Don't be afraid; he is a ghost but a kind-hearted one. He died due to an accident and has yet to marry a girl; thus he wanders as an Azure-Headed Ghost. However, if he meets a good girl who offers her virginity to him, he might have the chance for reincarnation."
After hearing this, the girl fell silent. I thought Shen Shoucai would miss his chance again and signaled for him to leave. It wouldn't look good when her family woke up later. Just as we were about to depart, the girl spoke up: "If you don't mind me, then take me! If we can't be husband and wife in this life, we can be in the next; let's consider it all just a dream."
"Young lady, this is due to your prolonged illness that has weakened your spirit; that's why the Yellow Weasel took advantage of you for marriage. If tonight you fulfill his desires, I will help restore your energy so that what happens can be regarded as just a dream—a dream where you fulfill his wishes and create ties for your next life together."
The girl agreed to my words as I quietly left.
The lights at the new house went out. My heart suddenly felt empty as I stepped out into the dew, leaving the girl's place. Since Dengke Qi had not been found and it was already deep into the night, I decided to stay at a nearby inn.
This inn was not great; first of all, it had poor sound insulation. I could hear the bed creaking next door, where I didn't know who was making all that noise. I stuffed my ears with the blanket, but the rumbling noise came closer and then faded away.
Then there were more strange creaking sounds.
I turned to my side, my eyes quickly adjusting to the darkness. I could make out a figure by the wall across from me, moving restlessly as if ready to pounce. A chill ran down my spine, and I sat up abruptly, turning on the light. As I focused on the wall, I let out a sigh of relief—Damn, it was just my clothes.
There was nowhere to hang them in the room, nor was there a temporary wardrobe; just a single nail on the wall where I had casually hung my outerwear.
Seeing it was just clothes, I tried to go back to sleep.
The couple next door seemed to have an excess of energy; their bed creaked incessantly. The sound made my mind wander, conjuring vivid images. Eventually, I had no choice but to wad up some paper and stuff it in my ears to block out the noise a little.
