Chapter 11: Self-Pity
The more I looked at the chubby guy, the more he seemed just that—chubby. Wasn't that woman Peng Yan?
"What are you doing here?"
"Who are you?" The fat guy seemed hostile towards my presence, likely fearing I would steal his girlfriend. I explained, "No, I came from over there." Turning around, I realized there was no passage at all; the swimsuit model who had just posed for the cover was nowhere to be seen.
Suddenly, a scream pierced the air behind me. I quickly turned to see a group of dwarves carrying a Flower Palanquin, swiftly walking into the water and disappearing. This shock jolted me awake; it was already bright outside. The first thing I did was contact Qin Jian to check on Chi Xinrong's condition.
Qin Jian reported that Chi Xinrong was doing well, which put my mind at ease.
Recently, the case involving Fruit Street had been overwhelming, leaving me little time to take a proper stroll. People like us belonged to the invisible crowd.
The invisible crowd doesn't attract attention, so everything relies on self-imposed physical training. Only with a strong body can one do more good deeds and uphold justice.
Next, Chi Xinrong regained consciousness and recalled some events.
Her nemesis was Dengke Qi.
In the fresh concrete at Fruit Street, a corpse had been discovered, and Qin Jian arranged for it to be taken to the City Bureau.
Encountering Chi Xinrong wasn't a coincidence; it was orchestrated by Dengke Qi. They were in the lounge while the corpse lay in the examination room. Zhang Section Chief attempted to remove the concrete from the corpse but accidentally cut his finger, causing blood to drip onto it.
Remember, this wasn't just any corpse; it was an existence filled with resentment and violent energy akin to a Zombie.
A drop of blood could awaken it. Previously, those who entered this place were merely influenced by this Evil Soul, but if awakened by a drop of blood, the consequences would be unimaginable.
At that very moment, Zheng Kai, accompanied by his mother, arrived at the City Bureau. He wasn't there to confess; he came to submit evidence.
In his wife's private jewelry box, he found a vial of Spirit Essence. Chief Tang examined the vial and discovered two sets of fingerprints on it—one belonging to Zheng Kai, who had handled it, and the other belonging to Bao Hui.
Upon further inspection, they were shocked to find that the vial contained a small amount of Potassium Cyanide.
Potassium Cyanide is highly toxic; inhalation, ingestion, or even contact can be fatal. Such a deadly substance is prohibited from circulation in the market, so how did Bao Hui acquire it?
Regardless, it was clear that Bao Hui intended to commit suicide as a way to take revenge on her husband, with the message that if she died, he wouldn't have an easy time either.
More clues began to surface. Bao Hui had taken out a life insurance policy with her brothers as beneficiaries.
Qin Jian and I followed this lead and discovered that Bao Hui's sister-in-law worked in the chemical industry. After we reasoned with her emotionally and logically, she confessed that her sister-in-law had asked her to steal Potassium Cyanide.
“She had a lot of rats at home and needed a few drops to deal with them.”
“You do know she died from Potassium Cyanide poisoning, right?”
“Yeah.” The sister-in-law lowered her head, glancing nervously at her husband and then at her mother-in-law. “I refused; she begged me on her knees.”
Her husband was furious and raised his hand as if to strike her, shouting, “Even if she begs you, you can't give it to her! That's illegal! Haven't you learned anything after all this time?”
“Daddy, don’t hit Mommy!” their four-year-old son cried out, hugging his younger brother's hand while clinging to his mother's neck.
It broke our hearts to witness this scene.
Life is fleeting; no matter what mistakes are made, one must bear the consequences.
Bao Hui's actions led her sister-in-law into legal trouble. What she thought in that moment—whether she regretted it or felt something else—no one would ever know.
Bao Hui died by suicide.
Qin Jian placed a red period on the case report, marking the bizarre death file, and I said, "Hold on."
"Do you still have questions?"
"Yes, we haven't found Bao Hui's Stepfather yet, and the matter regarding Dengke Qi is unresolved. You draw a circle; don't you want to continue investigating?"
"One thing at a time."
"Everything is connected to Bao Hui's case."
In the end, the case of Bao Hui remained incomplete, not forming a circle. Neither Qin Jian nor I felt completely relieved; Dengke Qi had vanished as if he had evaporated from the world, leaving no trace behind.
Dengke Qi's disappearance was not coincidental. It seemed that I had inadvertently intruded into that Dark Realm and weakened him, which allowed him to temporarily release Chi Xinrong, buying us some time in our search for him.
By the way, my Demonic Needle was still embedded in that evil entity.
At that time, he had hidden his Primordial Spirit within the Evil Spirit Flower, attempting to devour me when my Demonic Needle struck him. This Demonic Needle was a unique weapon passed down from my grandfather, entirely different from ordinary embroidery needles. While embroidery needles could only be used for sewing and mending clothes, the Demonic Needle could be used for acupuncture and even for killing invisibly, especially effective against evil beings.
Once the needle was inserted, it was like a balloon with a small puncture—it would eventually deflate and become useless. A single Demonic Needle could disrupt his energy and harm his Primordial Spirit. So I figured that recently, Dengke Qi would be desperate to find the Demonic Needle lodged in his body.
Qin Jian and Chi Xinrong had entered their own little world, busy with their romance and oblivious to everything else. Consequently, I took it upon myself to handle the remaining matters. I instructed Shen Shoucai to check medical stations, hospitals, and clinics where Dengke Qi might have gone for any news about him.
As time passed, Qin Jian urged whether it was time to close the case while he was still caught up in his romance with Chi Xinrong.
In truth, once Bao Hui's case was closed, it was done; her Stepfather's situation was essentially an unregistered missing person case. According to Zheng Kai's Mother, this man was an alcoholic who became insane after drinking—rambling incoherently and cursing anyone he encountered.
She couldn't remember how long he had ranted that night after getting drunk. It rained heavily; she slept soundly and didn't even notice the thunder. It wasn't until the next day that she realized he was missing. Zheng Kai was nearby at a construction site working on a restroom and didn't mention anything about it when he returned.
In short, this old man was already unpleasant; it wasn't unusual for him to leave home for ten months without showing up. Therefore, his disappearance wouldn't raise any alarms among his family.
Several months passed, and Zheng Kai's Mother began to realize the seriousness of the situation when the old man went silent. She searched everywhere, but when she couldn't find him, she speculated that he might have returned to his hometown.
The old man's hometown was in Chongqing, which was quite far away. He would need money to go back.
So this person just disappeared without anyone looking for him until Bao Hui had an incident. The old man's case resurfaced when it was reported that a body had been found in a bathroom where concrete was being poured; it was an old man. Upon hearing this, Zheng Kai's Mother felt uneasy.
She sent someone to inquire, and it turned out to be the Scum old man who had gone missing from her home for several years. She didn't cry, nor did she report this matter to the City Bureau. She thought, if he’s dead, then so be it; after all, he was always detestable. His death meant peace for her.
However, the reality was different. Zhang Section Chief remained in a state of unconsciousness, barely clinging to life, resembling a vegetative state. Even the doctors could not determine the cause.
As far as I know, Zhang Section Chief's soul had departed.
Everyone has their own tribulations, including those related to lust, fate, fortune, and romantic entanglements. What kind of tribulation is Zhang Section Chief facing? I'm not quite sure yet. Logically speaking, he should have improved after taking the pills given to me by my master.
