Chapter 5: The Thoughts of a Woman 0

Yuan Fang smiled, covering her mouth in a charming and delicate manner. 0

"Are you on the night shift?" 0

"We're patrolling Fruit Street." 0

"Oh, something seems to have happened there. I just got back from out of town yesterday. A friend contacted me and asked me to go out, but I refused. I thought it would be more convenient to catch a ride now. She offered to give me a lift on her electric bike, but thankfully I didn't take her up on it; otherwise, I wouldn't have felt comfortable with her going back alone." 0

"Oh." 0

The entire way, it was just me and Yuan Fang exchanging words while Qin Jian focused on driving, seemingly displeased with what had just happened. 0

Come on, I'm just trying to help you out. I cursed inwardly and couldn't help but glance back at Yuan Fang, who was still staring at Qin Jian. 0

"You were scared earlier, but you didn't think about throwing your bag at that guy and running for your life." 0

"I couldn't do that! My phone and a few hundred bucks are in my bag. Besides, why should I throw my bag at that jerk?" 0

I was just trying to make conversation, digging my own grave. Qin Jian shot me a half-smile and glared at me: "If you have nothing to do, just take a nap." 0

"Fine, I'll take a nap." I closed my eyes and relaxed my entire body. Just as I was letting go, another image suddenly flashed in my mind: amidst swirling blue smoke stood a figure in a black cloak resembling a Taoist robe, muttering some incantation. The figure moved like a snake, raising an oddly shaped weapon and slicing it across their finger, blood dripping down. Following that drop of blood, I saw a skull. 0

"Skull..." 0

I shouted in alarm, startling Qin Jian into slamming on the brakes and asking me, "What’s wrong?" 0

"I saw a skeleton, I saw a person." 0

"And then?" 0

"I can't remember. That person was dressed like the deceased Li Gui, feeding the skeleton with his own blood. The skeleton is the body we found on Fruit Street." 0

Qin Jian's eyes widened as he shot me a glance. 0

I quickly covered my mouth. 0

That's right, there was still someone in the car. I had dozed off earlier and, upon waking, completely forgot about saving that person. 0

"What are you talking about? I don't understand." 0

I exchanged glances with Qin Jian, then said, "It's probably for the best that you didn't understand. I've been playing a bloody game recently, and it left a shadow in my mind, so when I dozed off, I dreamt about it." 0

"That's not right; you just mentioned Fruit Street." 0

"Did I mention it?" I asked Qin Jian. 0

He nodded slightly. "No." 0

"He really did mention Fruit Street," Yuan Fang interjected anxiously. 0

"I'm sorry, but we heard it," Qin Jian said, frowning as he started the car and continued driving. 0

More people began to appear ahead, the colorful neon lights illuminating the bustling crowd. Those who enjoyed nightlife must have set aside their tense emotions and tight nerves at this moment, ready to embrace the most beautiful moments of life. 0

Women shopped wildly, while men occasionally indulged in nightlife. 0

Elderly people and children rarely ventured out at night; they mostly stayed home watching television or doing homework. 0

"Where are you going to drop me?" Yuan Fang was also caught up in the lively atmosphere, eager to get out of the car. 0

"Where do you want to get off?" 0

"Just ahead! I want to buy a trench coat at Hailan Home." 0

Hailan Home was quite famous, with numerous branches across the country. Most of the clothes Qin Jian wore were bought from Hailan Home. 0

After Yuan Fang got out of the car, we watched her walk into Hailan Home before slowly driving away. 0

"I guess she must have heard about my situation and got scared, which is why she got off early." 0

"You and your theories! Sigh! You really don't think before you speak." 0

"You have hair, show me." 0

Qin Jian laughed heartily! 0

"Damn it, focus on driving; there are a lot of people on this road." 0

A little past the noisy area, a right turn followed by a left turn led us to Farmers' Market. 0

"Where should I park?" Qin Jian asked as his phone rang again. I didn't respond, fearing it would interrupt his call. All I could hear was Qin Jian repeatedly saying, "We're almost there, just a bit further, not..." Then he cursed at his phone, "Damn it, we're human beings, not machines." 0

"What's wrong?" 0

"I'm getting anxious. Why haven't we arrived yet?" 0

"You didn't tell him about our rescue mission, and it takes a long detour from City Hospital to Fruit Street." 0

"I couldn't be bothered. Where did you park the car?" 0

We were at Park Road, which was bustling with people. Lanterns hung at the entrance of the park, where middle-aged men and women had been dancing in the square. However, they had already packed up, leaving the entire park square empty. Under the rows of streetlights, the lush green grass looked particularly refreshing. 0

"It's not far from here to Fruit Street; we won't take long walking." 0

After parking, we crossed an alley and saw the side street leading to Fruit Street. The side street had a cinema, a McDonald's, and a bank. Turning the corner would lead us directly to Farmers' Market, and from there it was just a short walk to Fruit Street. 0

The area felt eerily quiet now, devoid of the lively nightlife that usually attracted crowds. 0

I looked up and noticed a thick cloud of darkness hovering over the direction of the restroom on Fruit Street. A bad feeling washed over me—what if we were too late? I couldn't help but quicken my pace towards that street. As we approached, I realized something was indeed wrong; a crowd had gathered, and police were maintaining order. In the distance, a white van flashed blue lights as it waited. 0

"Something really happened?" I asked as I hurried alongside Qin Jian. We pushed through the onlookers, and a police officer recognized Qin Jian's arrival and quickly reported to his superior who was directing the dispersal of the crowd. 0

The superior was none other than Tang Section Chief, who had been in contact with Qin Jian. 0

When Tang Section Chief saw us arrive, he waved his hand decisively. "Leave this to them; we're pulling back." 0

Qin Jian approached Tang Section Chief, who briefly explained what had happened. 0

"About half an hour ago, a woman came here with a knife intending to commit suicide. She bled profusely, and what's strange is that the words coming out of her mouth were terrifying. The girl has already been taken away..." 0

“Chief Tang, it seems that Chief Zhang from the Laboratory has gone missing.” 0

“What?” 0

Qin Jian was speaking with Chief Tang when I pulled out a thin rope, recited an incantation, and ignited the Purgatory Flame. I shouted to everyone, “Rabbits, sheep, dragons, chickens, and cows, jump over the fire rope to avoid disaster and leave this place quickly; otherwise, great misfortune will befall you.” 0

Upon hearing this, the onlookers panicked. They lined up and jumped over the fire rope one by one, handing me various amounts of money in exchange for a talisman. 0

“Hey, I’m not selling these.” 0

“Come on, during such extraordinary times, don’t be modest. They’re giving you money for safety,” Chief Tang said as he crossed the fire rope. He whispered to Qin Jian, “This is too eerie. I’ll go look for Chief Zhang; you handle things here.” 0
