Chapter 55: Misjudgment
Earlier, I had seen the Shadow following Wei Lou on the street, and now it was hiding behind Mi. A sense of foreboding washed over me, and I quickly called out to Mi, "Mi, come here."
"What is it?" After running vigorously just moments ago, her face was slightly pale, showing signs of fatigue, with beads of sweat on her forehead.
"Come." I pulled out a talisman, pretending to wipe the sweat from her brow, but she insisted on going to the restroom and stubbornly walked away. The Shadow followed closely behind her, and my heart sank as I hurried after them.
The Shadow moved in a strange rhythm, sometimes fast and sometimes slow, almost sticking to Mi's side. It felt unreal yet eerie. With no other choice, I took out the Eighteen Cubes and recited the Five Thunder Spell. The Eighteen Cubes shot out a brilliant light, and before the Shadow could struggle, it was sucked in by the immense pull of the Eighteen Cubes.
Mi turned back to look at me, her weariness more pronounced.
I had to block Mi's Medium Ability because her constitution was too weak for Mediumship. Once she entered Mediumship, whatever she could see would also be able to see her, making it very dangerous for her.
"Mi, wait a moment."
"Brother Qi, why did you follow me?"
"I need to block your Medium Ability."
"Oh, can't I use this ability to help others?"
"Absolutely not. Your body is too frail. What I'm worried about is that instead of helping someone, you might end up being invaded by something evil."
Mi didn't press further; she stood obediently in front of me. I chanted a spell and pressed my fingers over her eyes, effectively blocking her Medium Ability.
"Is it done? I can't hold it anymore." Mi really couldn't wait any longer; she dashed toward the restroom door without bothering to say more and hurried inside.
Standing outside the restroom wasn't a good situation. People came in one after another, eyeing me with suspicion and hostility before entering. With no other options left, I reluctantly walked over to the men's restroom, stood by the sink pretending to wash my hands while anxiously waiting for Mi to come out.
When Mi finally emerged, I noticed her complexion had grown increasingly pale, and her spirit seemed low; she must be exhausted. I asked with concern, "Do you want to lean on my shoulder for a bit of rest?"
"Brother Qi, I..." Mi began to speak, but her body swayed and she collapsed softly into my arms.
I quickly scooped her up, calling her name as I sprinted toward the emergency room.
Chi Xinrong, Qin Jian, and Fatty, along with Wei Lou who had just woken up, all looked on in shock.
"What happened to Mi?"
"She's just too tired; hurry and call a doctor." I couldn't let Mi collapse from exhaustion after saving Lou. If that happened, Lou would feel guilty and blame himself, which would affect his recovery.
The doctor arrived, and Mi was taken into the emergency room. The others and I waited anxiously outside. After a long while, the doctor came out. "She has fainted; the situation is unclear. You need to take her for various tests."
"How could that be? There must be a reason! She's just too tired and needs rest, not tests."
"Ma Qi, don't get agitated; listen to the doctor," Qin Jian said as he held me back from spiraling into panic. Chi Xinrong was speaking softly with the doctor; I couldn't hear what they were saying, but their expressions seemed off.
No way, Mi can't be in trouble. I regretted ever activating her Medium Ability.
"Ma Qi, try to calm down. Why don't you take a break? Maybe if you sleep for a bit, Mi will be okay." It was ten-thirty; Mi had been unconscious for half an hour. I held my head in my hands while sitting on the bench; no matter what happened, I didn't want to leave.
Finally, it was Qin Jian who stepped forward.
"Ma Qi, you can't keep this up. If you collapse before Mi comes back, what good will that do?"
"Qin, I feel something's off. Activating her Medium Ability helped find Lou and should have had little impact on her. Why is she like this?"
Qin Jian frowned, pinching the bridge of his nose as if trying to clear his mind. "I'm not really sure about that, but what happened after you and Mi went back upstairs?"
Once Qin Jian reminded me, I suddenly recalled her trip to the restroom. I quickly pulled out the Eighteen Cubes, a crystal-like object, and anxiously stared at the swirling, indistinct thing inside. "I captured a strand of Shadow that followed Mi closely, and then she went into the restroom. After a few words, she ended up like this."
"What is Shadow?"
"Shadow encompasses many things—souls, Ghostly Enforcers, false illusions! But what I truly captured was that strand of Shadow." Qin Jian's gaze was fixed on the Eighteen Cubes in my hand; this crystal-like architectural model was indeed captivating.
Its lifelike three-dimensional shape and exquisite perspective made it hard to resist. I could feel its allure firsthand, so I wasn't sure what Qin Jian thought about it.
After observing the object for a while, Qin Jian remarked noncommittally, "You captured Shadow with this thing? It's just a glass trinket; how could it be that magical?"
At first, I was taken aback by Qin Jian's response; he couldn't see its brilliance! What a pity—he seemed destined to miss out on the Eighteen Cubes, just as I was with his Qin's Dagger.
"Don't speak carelessly if you don't understand," I said, stuffing the Eighteen Cubes into my bag and giving it a reassuring pat.
Chi Xinrong approached with the doctor, followed closely by Pang.
Pang was eager to please Chi Xinrong, so he was willing to do whatever she asked. In reality, he did nothing but hovered around her like a Pug.
The situation with Mi weighed heavily on me, making it hard to breathe. The doctor and Chi Xinrong seemed unconcerned about Mi; they just suggested resting for a bit and assured me that everything would be fine. They even told me to go back and rest while they arranged for Intensive Care nursing for Mi.
Pang nodded enthusiastically in agreement with Chi Xinrong's words.
I went to check on Mi; she truly looked as if she were sleeping peacefully. Her face appeared more flushed than before. The heart monitor showed everything was normal—perhaps I had been overthinking things and scaring myself unnecessarily.
Mi hadn't activated her Medium Ability for quite some time. It was like a patient who had avoided spicy food for ages suddenly indulging in it; they would surely struggle to handle it. Mi was likely experiencing something similar. After activating her Medium Ability, she might have seen more than just the Soul Separation building—there could have been other things as well—but she probably chose not to come out to avoid worrying me.
I promised Chi Xinrong that I would go back to the store to rest while Pang went to get the car.
I turned to Qin Jian and said, "That guy still hasn't given up on Rongrong. Don't you have any thoughts about it?"
"Me? Don't worry about me; I'm not considering that for now."
It's really a shame for Qin Jian, with such a good spirit and a handsome face that everyone loves.
"Qin, what's stopping you?"
"My mind isn't all there. If I can't ensure my own happiness, how can I bring happiness to others? Besides, Chi Xinrong really isn't suitable for me."
I didn't quite understand Qin Jian's words, but it was clear he wasn't interested in Chi Xinrong. I took a deep breath, initially wanting to ease the pressure caused by my worries about Mi, but Qin Jian wasn't giving me any leeway. As I walked out of the hospital, my head felt like a mess. The lingering scent of medicine faded behind me as the fresh, cool breeze hit my face, clearing my mind a little.
