Chapter 4: The Nun's Transmission
I got out of the car with Fatty, and we parked in an empty house.
Fatty whispered, "Brother Qi, that woman seems to be a Nun."
What do you mean "seems to be a Nun"? I could tell she was a Nun. This Nun appeared to have some beauty, despite her bare face and the monk's robe and hat that couldn't hide her inner grace. What surprised me even more was that this Nun was actually the mother of Nian Fa.
"Benefactor, I see you have a keen mind, but unfortunately, your fortune is shallow. Abandoned without parents, you must have crawled out from a pile of corpses, which is why you choose to believe in the dead and serve them to the end." The Nun's words struck me; they resonated perfectly with what I had seen in the hospital. I suddenly began to doubt my own origins—was there a connection between my background and that scene in the hospital?
Noticing my astonished expression, the Nun casually glanced at Fatty, who was eavesdropping poorly. "There is a quiet place; you can take me to see it." Her implication was clear, and with that look in her eyes, she clearly wanted to avoid Fatty and speak with me alone.
Even a fool could understand her hint. What could a Nun possibly want to discuss with me privately? My curiosity piqued. Should I indulge my curiosity and give her this opportunity?
"Please come inside, Master." I led the Nun into my room. Fatty, sensing the situation, did not follow us but stood outside with a face as dark as if someone had borrowed his grain and returned husks instead.
I brought the Nun into my room but did not close the door.
"Close the door." When I heard her say this, my heart skipped a beat. Could it be that this Nun had taken a liking to my handsome demeanor and refined qualities? However, I am a principled person; even if I were attracted to her, I must maintain my integrity and at least avoid any ambiguous relationship with a Nun.
Seeing me on high alert, she asked curiously, "Why didn't you hear what I said? Close the door so we can talk in detail."
"Oh, talk in detail." There were no extra chairs in my room; we could either sit on the bed or have one person standing while the other sat. Even if I could bring in a chair from outside, there wasn't much space for it.
Sitting on the bed with just the two of us—a man and a woman—this... I slowly walked toward the door and closed it. My mind conjured up an exhilarating image: the Nun still possessed charm; she must have been an extraordinary beauty in her youth.
What a pity she had become a nun.
Now returning to the secular world, seeing how handsome I was, perhaps she thought of an old cow eating tender grass. In just a moment, she might strip away my clothes. I turned around to find the Nun sitting cross-legged on the stool with her hands together. "Benefactor, your six senses are impure; just stand there without moving while I tell you something."
This Nun was no ordinary person; she could calculate and see through people's thoughts. How embarrassing! Yet still not quite as good as my grandfather.
With her statement making me feel awkward about sitting on the bed, I could only force a dry smile and stand properly across from her.
"Benefactor, Nian Fa is my child..."
Hearing her words left me stunned, mouth agape and eyes wide, staring at her as if she were an extraordinary sight.
"A long time ago, I was a nurse, working in the Mother-Infant Room. There, I witnessed much of life and death. Disillusioned, after giving birth, I became a notorious nun." I pondered what she meant by seeing so much of life and death, especially in the Mother-Infant Room. It reminded me of an age-old saying about the difficulties women face in childbirth. Carrying a child for ten months is a trial, but the moment of delivery is the greatest challenge. Some women are fortunate enough to drink chicken soup after giving birth; others meet Yama, the king of hell.
"Did your partner agree to your becoming a nun?" I was genuinely surprised. It seemed unbelievable that such a beautiful goddess would have a husband who would allow it.
"No, I have no partner. I got involved with an Internal Male Doctor, and unexpectedly became pregnant. During my pregnancy, I witnessed horrifying things. Despair set in as I realized that life is just this way—life and death are merely two sides of the same coin. My child should not have belonged to this world; in the end, he died, and I had to take them with me..."
"This doesn't seem to concern me..."
"You'll find it does if you keep listening."
"Oh."
I pretended to listen intently while my mind wandered to another matter. This was related to Peng Yan, the visions seen in the hospital, and the sight of a man carrying away a baby. Could these be connected to the story that Nun was about to tell?
"Long ago, I was a nurse responsible for taking aborted children who had not died to a specific department that dealt with those unborn who survived abortion attempts. Ironically, while one operating room was working hard to ensure the safety of both mother and child, another operating room was delivering a child who had survived an abortion attempt. The mother did not want this child because it was an accident; not only did she refuse to accept it, but her family also rejected its arrival. When I took this life into my arms to deliver it to the Abortion Infant Department, news came from the normal delivery room that another child had died due to umbilical cord strangulation. The mother fainted upon realizing her ten-month pregnancy had resulted in a dead child. Their family was devastated. Meanwhile, the child I held was lively and crying out with vigor, yet I had to take him away for disposal. The thought that this living being would soon become a dead child pierced my heart like a thorn."
As Nun paused at this point, I hurriedly went to fetch water. Upon opening the door, I saw Fatty standing there with a dry smile on his face: "Brother Qi, I was just coming to find you; do you want some business?"
I hadn’t expected Fatty to be eavesdropping; he must have misunderstood something and likely shared my earlier thoughts. He must have been here trying to overhear something.
"Do you have an order?"
"Yes!"
"What day is it that everyone has gathered here?" I didn’t step outside but poured water for Fatty instead: "You handle this for now; I'll take the water in for Master."
Carrying the water inside, Nun remained expressionless as always, hands clasped together as if she hadn’t moved at all.
"Master, please drink some water."
"Thank you."
As I watched her drink water, I couldn't help but voice my curiosity. "Master, is that a rare case, or is it something that happens regularly?"
"It's a long-term issue. Some young parents find themselves with an unexpected child and don't want to terminate the pregnancy; it's not a big deal. But some parents, due to conflicts, abandon perfectly healthy children and end up having them aborted anyway. Those unfortunate lives must be dealt with. They are cruelly discarded in a bucket or on a tray, left to gradually cool and die. Later, they are mixed with some waste and burned. I've seen enough of this. When I saw a lively baby who clearly wasn't problematic, I secretly found someone to take the child away."
"Oh. Saving a life is better than building a seven-story pagoda; you did a good deed."
"This child was lucky. After being taken out, he grew up smoothly and turned out to be quite handsome." At this point, Nun gazed at me affectionately, causing my heart to skip a beat. Could it be that Nun was referring to me? But then Nun slowly stood up and reached out to touch my face. "Child, it's wonderful to be alive; you must live well."
Her words struck me like an electric shock, leaving me frozen in place. I didn't even notice how she left, and then I frantically chased after her, but there was no trace of Nun.
I am the Abandoned Child. How could I have grown so fat?
