Chapter 10: End of the Demon Realm (Part Seven)
The road was long and muddy, and I hadn't walked far. My shoes were filthy, and it was getting darker by the minute; night was about to fall. I couldn't help but quicken my pace, rushing forward. The destination seemed close, but getting there was another matter entirely.
It was like seeing a mountain in the distance on a regular day; it looked near, but approaching it proved to be quite difficult. Without wasting any more time, I sprinted ahead, ignoring everything else, and finally caught sight of a village hidden beneath the trees before darkness enveloped the land.
I wasn't sure if my memory was faulty or if the same thing had truly happened before.
The scene before me felt eerily familiar.
Was this Bone Jade's home? Since it was nighttime, the people inside couldn't see me. I hid in the shadows and watched as the dimly lit corridor seemed to be adorned for a Happy Event. Faint sounds of joyous music drifted through the air—who was celebrating?
With that question in mind, I slipped into the house, pressing myself against the wall as much as possible. Then I activated my Invisibility Talisman and boldly made my way inside.
"First bow to the earth, second bow to the high hall." From afar, I heard a raspy voice calling out the ceremonial greetings—wasn't that Lao Guang's voice? Bone Jade was getting married! Driven by curiosity, I headed straight for the wedding hall.
The entrance of the hall was decorated with large red satin lotus flowers tied together, and red characters of joy were everywhere. Two individuals dressed in bright red wedding attire were performing the ceremony.
From behind, I could see one of them was Qin Jian, the person I had been desperately searching for. The other was none other than Bone Jade herself. As I stealthily approached Qin Jian, I whispered, "Qin Jian, Qin Jian..."
Qin Jian remained unresponsive to my calls, his expression blank as he followed Lao Guang's instructions without question. After the ceremony came the entrance to the Wedding Chamber; Bone Jade had a vibrant red flower pinned at an angle in her hair, while Qin Jian had a similar striking flower placed at the nape of his neck.
A Mini Flower? This Mini Flower was rare in the human realm; it acted like a hallucinogen. Once worn, it made one forget their identity and behave like a puppet, obediently following orders from those nearby.
I couldn't help but pluck the Mini Flower from Bone Jade's hair. She jolted slightly and regained her senses but couldn't see me due to the Invisibility Talisman. She merely cast a surprised glance at Qin Jian before refusing to enter the Wedding Chamber.
"Uncle Guang, Liu Niang, I can't do this."
"Dead girl, I didn't hold it against you for letting that fat sheep slip away last time. This time, you must obey and do as we say," Liu Niang said, casting a fierce glance at Qin Jian, who was entranced by Mini Flower. Her seductive eyes sparkled mischievously as she flicked out a long, slender tongue to lick Qin Jian's handsome face. With a soft sound, Liu Niang retracted her tongue, savoring the taste in her mouth with a greedy smile.
"That damned wife," I muttered under my breath as I quickly pulled Mini Flower from Qin Jian's neck.
Once Mini Flower was removed, Qin Jian shook his head, furrowing his brow. He looked around and opened his mouth to speak, but I hurriedly leaned in and whispered, "Qin Jian, it's me, Ma Qi. Don't make a sound; just follow their lead."
Yu Lei's eyes brimmed with tears as she glanced helplessly at Qin Jian, who pretended to be confused. She pleaded with Liu Niang, "Mother, I've helped you capture many strong men over the years. After you drained their essence, they became your puppets while I became an unforgivable ghost. Mother, I can't continue like this..."
Liu Niang's anger flared at Yu's words. Suddenly, her height surged as a chilling aura of black energy enveloped every cubic meter of the room. At the same time, Yu took flight and grabbed Qin Jian, making a run for the door.
Liu Niang let out a maniacal laugh as countless tentacle-like claws erupted from her body, resembling the spider demon from Journey to the West. They lunged toward Yu from all directions.
What struck me as odd was Lao Guang's indifference to the chaos unfolding before him. He leisurely sipped his tea without a care in the world.
"Old Crow, are you just going to watch?" Liu Niang roared in fury, her claws splitting into several paths as they aimed to seize Yu and Qin Jian's escape route. It was time for me to intervene; after all, I had an Invisibility Talisman. Grabbing a burning candle, I recited an incantation and directed it toward Liu Niang's monstrous claws.
As soon as the killing talisman was unleashed, Liu Niang's ghostly claws ignited spontaneously with a sizzling sound and an acrid smell reminiscent of burning roots.
In an instant, Liu Niang let out a shriek as her claws recoiled rapidly. Her massive body shook violently, causing the entire house to tremble as if it might collapse. I covered Yu and Qin Jian as they made their escape. Their reactions differed when they saw the flying candle.
Qin Jian recognized my presence; though surprised, he remained silent. In contrast, Yu sensed an invisible force trying to take Qin Jian away and instinctively pulled him behind her in a protective gesture.
As for Lao Guang—he was actually Crow.
The very Old Crow Liu Niang referred to. With a gloomy expression, he sipped his tea and when he saw the candle fly up, his sinister face twisted into a cruel smile. "Liu Niang, we have guests arriving; let me entertain them." As he spoke, he revealed his true form—a gigantic crow with dark feathers.
The crow spread its wings wide and spat something at me; instantly, my Invisibility Talisman failed. I reappeared just as Yu widened her beautiful eyes in shock and exclaimed, "Ma Qi!"
Yù shouted, "Ma Qi!" Old Crow paused for a moment, and I let out a hearty laugh. "Old Crow, your Ma Grandpa has arrived. How do you plan to entertain Ma Grandpa?" As I spoke, I silently recited an incantation, breaking my index finger, and a drop of blood shot toward Old Crow's dark, evil eyes.
This move was risky; if I missed the timing, it wouldn't just waste a drop of my blood but also raise Old Crow's suspicion.
The blood droplet flew toward one of Old Crow's eyes in a strikingly three-dimensional manner. Under the reflection of its pupil, the droplet magnified infinitely. Caught off guard, the droplet smoothly entered its eye, spreading like a drop of water hitting the surface.
The blood invaded its brain cells and cornea, bursting like a crushed egg. Old Crow let out a furious howl as its entire eyeball shattered. In that moment of madness, it flapped its wings and flew away. Liu Niang's ghostly claws were damaged and severely wounded; she attempted to shake the house down to bury us alive.
Dust filled the air, thick and heavy. I couldn't afford to think too much as I grabbed Qin Jian's hand and, with Yu's help, sprinted out of the dark corridor that was actually just a hollow tree trunk. I could hear the thunderous sound of collapse behind us, feel the ground shaking beneath my feet, and sense death closing in.
A massive ghostly Willow Branch tilted dangerously toward us.
With a loud crash, a bolt of lightning struck nearby. Was it going to rain? As I ran, I glanced up at the pitch-black night sky. Just moments ago, it had been clear, promising sunny weather ahead; now dark clouds rolled in with thunder and lightning—autumn storms were rare but not unheard of.
