Chapter 4: End of the Demon Realm (Part One)
Sister Qin's husband was a burly man with thick eyebrows and big eyes, his features quite handsome. As I looked at him, I couldn't help but notice a resemblance to Qin Jian. Just then, I overheard someone asking, "Who bought the woman that Zou Guizi sent over this noon?"
"I did."
A dark-skinned man, probably in his fifties, raised his left hand while holding a torch in his right as he stepped out from the crowd to stand in front of Sister Qin's husband and the questioner.
"You've bought yourself a wife; take good care of her. Shan Ji Ge will look after you from now on. Also, make sure to get her pregnant soon; that way, you can secure her heart and feel more like a family." Shan Ji Ge said, wielding a machete threateningly at a timid tall man who stood there nervously. He patted the man's shoulder and added, "As for your cow eating Qin Mingliang's grass, just take it out and slaughter it. Share the beef, and this matter will be settled."
Next to the tall man stood a short but fierce-looking woman who protested angrily, "Cows eat grass; what's wrong with having to slaughter one for compensation?"
Her argument made some sense. A cow eating grass was just a handful of grass after all; it seemed unreasonable to slaughter an entire cow for that. Moreover, I felt it was unfair for the whole village to come together to divide someone's cow over such a trivial issue.
"This is unreasonable; you can't do this," I couldn't help but step forward, ready to act as a fair judge. But as soon as I stood up, silence fell over the crowd. All eyes turned toward me as if I were some kind of monster that had dropped from the sky.
At that moment, I realized their clothing was vastly different from mine. The women wore coarse fabric while the men had something tied around their waists that barely covered their backsides and groins, exposing their muscular thighs and chests. They looked like savages standing right in front of me.
I felt like an outsider, so conspicuous that I became the center of attention. Suddenly, I felt utterly frustrated—how did I end up in this wretched place surrounded by such oddities? They were arguing endlessly over a cow eating grass, and here I was, not only failing to avoid trouble but jumping right into it.
They began to close in on me with predatory looks that were more terrifying than seeing a ghost. My heart raced as I quickly pointed in one direction and stammered, "I... I came from over there." The crowd followed my finger.
In that direction was nothing but darkness; they couldn't see anything. Panicking, I took off running but stopped abruptly with a nervous laugh: "There really is a wall over there; you just can't see it now. Baymax can see it; it's a green wall! If you climb over it, you'll find our era..." My explanation was weak and incoherent; they clearly didn't understand what I was saying. In the end, my words only served to infuriate them further. They surged forward all at once, beating me mercilessly until they had me firmly restrained. Someone grabbed my backpack and started pulling out my belongings one by one.
They pulled out the nearly lifeless Crested Serpent.
After extracting the Crested Serpent, some gasped in shock while others knelt down on the ground, chanting in an unintelligible language. Then they dragged me off to a dark dungeon where they left me without another word.
I lay on the damp ground feeling drowsy as I listened to the sounds of wind outside and something whipping through the air along with footsteps. Could it be Qin Jian searching for me? Hope surged within me as I propped myself up and slowly crawled toward the window where faint moonlight seeped through.
Outside, shadows danced among the trees, but there was no sign of Qin Jian.
I grasped the window slats made by Nanzhu with both hands, trying to shake them loose, but it was quite difficult. Despite being made of bamboo, they were very sturdy; without considerable strength, it was impossible to loosen them. Just as I was attempting to wiggle the Nanzhu window slats, I noticed a shadow flicker in front of me.
"Hi, hello." The newcomer was a woman, her voice soft and gentle, suggesting she must be quite beautiful.
My phone, backpack, and the ghost-catching tools inside my backpack had all been stolen. I was worried about that snake and Qin Jian. Seeing someone greet me, I hurriedly waved at her, "Can you help me?"
"How can I help you?" She boldly stepped closer and asked.
"What's your name?"
"My name is Qin Shuying."
"What is this place?"
"This is Qin Family Village."
"Isn't it hidden deep within the forest of Decayed Village?"
"You know it and still ask?"
So, Decayed Village really does exist?
"You still haven't told me how you want me to help you."
"Have you seen that snake?"
"The Red Snake?"
"Yes. Can you take care of it for me and then quietly release it?"
"It's injured, very seriously. We need to apply Immortal Grass to help it recover."
"Thank you, Qin Shuying. Your name is as beautiful as you are."
"What is your name?"
"Ma Qi."
"That's a strange name. Mochi is something you eat. Can you eat it?"
"I... I'm a person, not something edible."
"We are descendants of Qin Shubao. Our ancestors fled into the depths of the forest to hide from pursuers. I don't like this place. If I get the chance, I will definitely go out and see how vast this world is."
"If you let me out, I will take you with me."
Qin Shuying took a timid step back after hearing this. "My father thinks you're dangerous. There’s a sword in the backpack, along with a mirror and talismans. You are an Evil Sorcerer."
"I am not an Evil Sorcerer; I am a Mortician. Do you know what a Mortician does?"
"What do they do?"
"They bury the dead. When a person dies, their soul needs to be guided, and then they are buried."
"It's such a waste to bury the dead; they could last us through the winter."
Eating human flesh! I gasped in shock—"You eat the dead?"
"Not like that. We don't eat the dead; we integrate the souls of the deceased into our flesh and keep them in our hearts forever. Not every deceased person's flesh can be consumed; we cannot eat the flesh of an Evil Person, as their meat and organs are rotten..."
"Goodbye, you need to think of a way to let me go, please..."
Qin Shuying looked at me, her expression amused as she chuckled, "Are you afraid we will eat you?"
"What else could it be?"
Qin Shuying clasped her hands behind her back and scrutinized me for a moment. "We won't easily eat someone whose origins are unknown. Instead, we will uncover the truth and make you work here, and you'll never be able to leave this village."
Her words chilled my heart completely. In my despair, I still wanted to plead with her, "Please, don't! I have so much to do, and besides, I need to save someone."
"Who do you want to save?"
I opened my mouth, wanting to say that Bone Jade was just a ghost. But even if I told Qin Shuying, she wouldn't understand. Sighing, I shook my head. "Forget it, she doesn't exist; she's a ghost."
