Chapter 117: Dead Loop (Part Twenty-Five)
Lin Tai's dream was to become a qualified national football player; he loved football more than anything else. I am not a fortune teller, and these are not my predictions, but rather the emotions of Lin's Mom, who couldn't hide her joy upon seeing Chi Xinrong, even as she felt utterly exhausted over Lin Tai's situation.
Perhaps seeing Chi Xinrong brought her a glimmer of comfort! Unable to resist, she took out the photo album that chronicled Lin Tai's growth. The album had a beautiful name: Memory Album. While the Memory Album did not provide Lin's Mom with anything to change her mood, it did lead her to tears as she flipped through the photos of her son growing up, eventually breaking down into sobs.
In the sealed world of Lin Tai, no one knew where this world was located; I certainly didn't understand how it existed or how it came to be. All I knew was that I entered this space filled with loneliness, fear, and an overwhelming chill through some kind of sensing.
As for Lin Tai and his companions— they were a group of grotesque Infant Souls whose existence led Lin Tai astray. They guided him toward an evil world far from the light, casting aside his lifelong dreams.
The Evil Soul that appeared between Lin Tai and me was actually his Heart Demon, obstructing him from escaping the sealed world with its trickery. I absolutely refused to believe that evil could triumph over good; this is not just a saying but a truth that has existed since ancient times. I formed a seal with my hands and recited an incantation: "Exorcism binds demons, protects life and body, grants wisdom and clarity, brings peace to the heart and mind, Three Souls forever, may the spirit not be lost, Urgent Command!"
As soon as the incantation was uttered, the Evil Soul blocking me from Lin Tai covered its ears and screamed, "No... don't..."
Ignoring the deafening noise that felt like it was tearing my eardrums apart, I grabbed Lin Tai's hand and ran—shaking off the heart-wrenching cries and the incessant mischief of the Infant Souls. Finally, we saw a door bursting forth with countless beams of white light; this was Lin Tai's heart door. I held onto him and urged, "Hold on tight and rush through with me."
Lin Tai had completely lost his will; he followed my lead without question. We raced toward that white light in a desperate bid for time. Just as we neared it, a scream escaped from Lin Tai that startled me into looking back.
At his feet appeared a pair of terrifying hands—pale and almost devoid of color. At the other end of those hands was a mutilated upper body. Just one glance at those hands alongside the bloodied torso and that horrifying ghostly face would ensure that anyone would never forget this moment; it was like a nightmare that made your heart tremble every time you recalled it.
I panicked; there was no time to think further. I insisted to Lin Tai to keep moving forward before turning around and kicking at whatever was gripping his leg. I heard a sharp crack and thought I had sent it flying, but instead heard a monstrous cry as it opened its gaping maw wide to bite down on Lin Tai's leg.
I could smell the metallic tang of blood in the air; I heard Lin Tai's agonizing scream and saw that creature's vicious gaze as it sank its sharp teeth deep into his flesh, blood flowing freely down his leg.
Everything felt so real; it didn’t seem like something happening in Lin Tai’s sealed world. In an instant of shock, I didn’t have time to think—I stomped down hard on whatever was biting Lin Tai’s leg: "I stomped on it several times before biting my tongue to spit out bloodied saliva at it."
In an instant, I felt lighter all over; whatever had been entangling me loosened its grip. Everything around me turned white before I suddenly jolted back to reality. I found myself back in the familiar place—the bedroom—where Lin Tai lay peacefully on the bed. Chi Xinrong held the Memory Album in her hands, looking at me with ecstatic joy while trying to maintain composure as she nodded at me.
Lin Dad and Lin's Mom both looked toward Lin Tai.
Lin Tai lay motionless, indistinguishable from a corpse; the only difference was that his complexion looked much better than before. Then his finger twitched slightly before he slowly opened his eyes amidst his mom’s sobs.
"Son... Son..." Lin's Mom was so emotional that she didn't know what to do, hugging and kissing him, which made my heart ache. I, too, was born to parents but was not raised by them; how I wished I had a mother who loved and cared for me like that.
I silently called out in my heart: Mom!
It seemed she sensed something, suddenly turning to look at me, then walking towards me step by step. At that moment, everyone in the room was astonished, and in the silence, she wrapped her arms around me and said with deep affection, "Thank you. Without you, there would be no my son."
Hearing those words felt a bit ambiguous to me; it seemed they were meant for Lin Dad instead, as he was the one who gave life to Lin Tai. Unfortunately, it was also his wife's overindulgence that ruined that life.
She was always afraid he would fall, constantly hovering around him, refusing to let him participate in any sports activities, effectively cutting off his dreams and aspirations. Staying away from football was the best way to repay her.
Lin Dad was more composed and calm. He looked lovingly at his son, who was still weak after waking up, and gently asked, "Are you hungry? Let Cow Sister make you some soup."
Lin Tai furrowed his brows tightly. He moved his hand down and pushed aside the blanket to reveal unblemished skin with only a patch of invisible bruising. Everyone watched him as he seemed entranced, grabbing at the invisible bruise, scratching and digging at it. Then he stared at his fingers and laughed foolishly, "Retribution, retribution... Come on! I'm not afraid of you..."
Lin Tai's behavior frightened everyone in the room. Lin Dad lost control of his emotions and grabbed my collar, demanding, "What’s going on? What is this?"
I fixed my gaze on Lin Tai and replied word by word, "Evil Soul bit him."
"Evil Soul?"
"Yes. It trapped itself in its own world; others cannot enter this sealed world. In that world, it's not just him; there are many unknown things existing as well." As I spoke, I glanced at Lin's Mom.
Lin's Mom was now the owner of Lin's Pharmacy; she occasionally went to the clinic to help people with their ailments.
Feeling uncomfortable under my gaze, Lin's Mom turned her head away sheepishly and walked towards Lin Tai, softly comforting him: "Your leg is fine; you'll be okay. How about when you have more strength, Mom helps you walk?"
Lin Tai's lips moved slightly as he stared blankly at me.
In his eyes, I saw despair towards death, fear, and a plea for help. Honestly, I didn't want such a living person to lie in a coffin while I handled the funeral arrangements and sent him into the furnace to instantly turn into a handful of ashes.
I also wanted to help him. I scanned the people in the room; the fat man looked tense, unsure of what to do next. Lin Dad was sweating profusely, his eyes fixed on Lin Tai, as if he were afraid of something.
Lin's Mom stayed close to Lin Tai, incessantly asking if he was hungry, repeating the same pointless question.
Finally, I focused my gaze on Chi Xinrong, who was holding a photo album, and said, "Please bring me a bowl of water."
"I'll go get it right away."
Chi Xinrong understood and hurriedly set down the album before rushing out.
"Oh, I'm sorry. I was so busy earlier that I didn't have time to make you tea," Lin Dad said. He had forgotten about making tea; in his eyes, we were just people from the lower class who didn't deserve such treatment. Now that his son had woken up, he instructed Cow Sister to make tea for me.
I waved my hand dismissively. "It's not that I want tea; I just want to use the water to calm his mind."
