Chapter 4: The Strange Light
What the hell!
This is the first time I've seen a ghost backfire.
And seeing Zuna's contorted body twisting into various difficult positions, it was as if her body had become a tool, being manipulated at will. One moment she was flipping over, the next she was upside down, and then she was pulling her tongue out with her hands.
Despite the agony etched on her face, her hands were uncontrollably tugging—
A chilling sensation gripped me, sending shivers down my spine and making my scalp tingle. I nearly jumped out of my skin.
Fortunately, I had the habit of carrying talismans with me. In a moment of desperation, I pulled out an Exorcism Talisman and pressed it against Zuna's forehead.
"Ha ha ha..." To my surprise, she reached up and grabbed the talisman, grinning wickedly as it spontaneously ignited.
This ghost was formidable, filled with malice and resentment—this was going to be tough.
I formed a hand sign for Taishang Laojun and chanted incantations: "Luo Wei, Diyama Rolo, Indestructible, slay demons and exorcise evil. Taishang Laojun, Urgent Command..." With a swift motion, I pressed the talisman onto her forehead. A flash of golden light erupted, and Zuna let out a scream that wasn't her own.
Her mouth widened to reveal a set of sharp, distorted teeth.
The Evil Spirit's grotesque, charred face peeled away from Zuna's, howling and struggling before snapping back into place. She tilted her head back, long hair cascading down as she looked at me from behind with a disdainful gaze and a sinister smile that ignited my anger—
"Five Thunder Spell..." I quickly changed my hand signs, focusing my mind and drawing energy from my dantian as I shouted: "Five Thunder Spell unleashed, may all forms perish—die!"
With a thunderous explosion, Zuna staggered and collapsed to the ground, covered in dirt.
Seeing her lifeless state made me think that the mischievous Evil Spirit was probably in a similar condition. It was time to use the Soul Absorbing Talisman.
I felt confident that extracting the Evil Spirit with the Soul Absorbing Talisman would be no problem.
I took out the Soul Absorbing Talisman and pressed it against my forehead, increasing the intensity to absorb souls.
Just at that moment of extreme tension, the door opened.
A person walked in behind me. I was facing away from them, and before I could turn around to look or explain, a heavy blow struck me on the head, causing a splitting headache. When I turned around, I could only see one face.
It was Zhu Gang who ambushed me.
In the dark, murky space, I couldn't see anything.
But I have Demon Eyes.
As the thought crossed my mind, my eyes truly began to see. I realized this was an unfathomably dark space, resembling a hollow pebble, and I was situated within that hollow area.
I felt lost and bewildered when suddenly a voice called out from an even darker place.
"Ma Qi..."
Hearing that voice brought me joy. Was it Lao Luo?
"Lao Luo, where am I?"
"You are in the Dark Realm. Focus on your surroundings."
I am in the Dark Realm?
What is happening!
What just occurred? I thought carefully, my head pounding. Crouching on the ground, it felt very hard beneath me, as if I were standing on a stone slab.
I struggled to piece together the events that had transpired.
Suddenly, it hit me—I had been ambushed.
But where was I?
Had I died?
Or had I arrived in the Underworld? If that were the case, how could I still hear someone calling my name?
As I grappled with my confusion, a truly innocent girl stood before me, startling and unexpected.
Her face bore an innocent expression.
In her eyes, there was a strange light.
This peculiar light reminded me of something I had seen once in the eye of a dead fish.
I recalled a time when my grandfather received a large order and brought home a fat fish to treat us.
The fish was dead, yet its eyes held a glimmer. A very strange glimmer—
"Brother, I want some water," she said.
She called me brother and wanted water.
Yet I had no memory of her at all. Who was she? Why did she seem so familiar?
I took a step closer to her.
In the pitch-black environment, it was just me and her.
The light surrounding her became increasingly apparent as I drew closer. I had a feeling that following her would be dangerous. A shiver ran down my spine, and I stopped to ask, "Sister, who are you?"
"My brother has a terrible memory; I am Yin Yin."
"Yin Yin, how did you end up here? Don’t you know that everyone at home is worried sick about you?"
Yin Yin shook her head and bounced closer to me. "I’m having a great time here. Do you want to play with me?"
"Ma Qi... get a grip. What you're seeing isn't real; something is controlling your consciousness and mind. You need to pull yourself together; otherwise, the consequences will be dire."
"Lao Luo, where are you? Over there!"
I called out into the darkness, my hand unable to see anything as if it were trapped behind a heavy curtain.
Ma Qi, you’re being reckless and overly confident.
You’re too weak against Evil Spirits and people alike.
I couldn’t hear Lao Luo’s voice. My hand went cold and tightened as I looked down to see Yin Yin holding onto me. Her innocent smile made my scalp tingle with fear.
"Ma Qi, don’t be scared. Quickly block out Demon Eyes. If you can’t see her, you won’t be taken away. I’ll light a guiding lantern for you; follow the light and ignore everything else. No matter what you see or hear, don’t look back."
So it was the Demon Eyes causing me to see these unreal figures?
Damn it, this Demon Eyes is utterly useless.
I focused on blocking my mind's presence, adjusting my state, and shutting off the Demon Eyes.
When I opened my eyes again, I found myself completely alone.
No one was around, and the overwhelming darkness was frightening. I felt uneasy all over, a sense of dread creeping in.
Creak—an eerie sound suddenly broke the silence of the empty space. A door appeared in the darkness; wasn’t that strange?
The half-open door radiated a dazzling light, presenting a breathtaking scene that was utterly enticing. I found myself drawn toward that light.
“Ma Qi, that is the Door of Death…”
Lao Luo's voice echoed in the space, filled with a magnetic pull. At that moment, his words played a crucial role.
Like a compass, they helped me discern my direction and gave me the courage to survive.
Hearing him call it the Door of Death, I hurriedly stopped in my tracks.
What lay beyond that door?
I had once read about strange omens of death in my grandfather's book, which mentioned that the door to that world was filled with temptation.
I stepped back.
I shouldn’t look up; I should keep my head down, resolute not to gaze at that door.
When I looked up again, a faint flicker appeared before my eyes—a tiny spark dancing in the darkness.
It seemed close, yet as I walked toward the flickering light, it felt incredibly distant.
“Brother, I want to drink water.”
A voice calling from behind me inexplicably conjured an image of a cute cartoon doll-like girl in my mind.
I desperately wanted to turn around and tell her that I would get her some water when I returned.
But in the end, I held firm, hardening my heart for the first time and not looking back.
"Brother, look at me, I am Yin Yin. I am so pitiful... Please, help me."
I told myself not to look.
I strode forward, heading toward that flickering spark of light hidden in the darkness.
The cries from behind felt like echoes from another world, but the spark was right before me. In the dim light, I saw myself.
There was a bed, and I was lying on it.
That lamp was the guiding soul lamp leading me home.
