Chapter 19: The Examination of Ghosts (Part Three)
Wu Shengxiu revealed that Zhou Xiao and Ji Xiaoying were not married.
She had a boyfriend in prison, and when he got out, he learned that she was with Zhou Xiao. He then began to cause trouble for Zhou Xiao one after another.
Zhou Xiao deeply regretted it but found himself unable to shake off Chi Zhi Ping's harassment.
In a desperate situation, he broke up with Ji Xiaoying. However, due to a financial dispute, he faced further difficulties from Chi Zhi Ping, resulting in Zhou Xiao being beaten and suffering three broken ribs, which landed him in the hospital. He developed depression and later jumped off a tall building to commit suicide.
This love triangle turned into a complex quadrangle.
Desire for love brings life; hatred brings death!
I felt overwhelmed.
It is difficult for even a wise judge to resolve family matters. The examination of ghosts had to come to a temporary halt; I needed to visit my grandfather.
On my way to see him, I had to make proper arrangements for the others.
It wasn't that I was trying to show off; I genuinely didn't understand the difference between the Qing Ghost and the Red-Clothed Evil Spirit. That's why I carelessly mentioned this matter to my sickly grandfather.
Wu Shengxiu was a Qing Ghost. Upon hearing this, my grandfather's eyes widened like dead fish, unable to catch his breath. His head tilted, and then—oh no—
My grandfather passed away.
It was truly unfortunate that he died at such a time.
If word got out that my grandfather had passed away, the business at Ma Wu Funeral Home would undoubtedly plummet, and the work at the station might be taken over by other shops. Therefore, Fatty and I agreed that we couldn't let anyone know about my grandfather's death. We would handle Ji Xiaoying's matter first and then secretly hold a funeral, burying him in a place with excellent feng shui as a way to repay his kindness in raising us.
Looking at my grandfather's frail body, his gray hair, and the few whiskers that always stuck up from his chin made my nose tingle with emotion—I wanted to cry—but I couldn't allow myself to do so.
Although we were not blood relatives and shared no biological ties, both Fatty and I were raised by him.
I held back my sorrow alongside Fatty, one of us bathing him while the other prepared the coffin.
After taking a few steps, a thought suddenly struck me.
Oh no, I lent the coffin to Wu Shengxiu.
The reason Wu Shengxiu hadn’t fully transformed into a Ghostly Spirit yet was that her conscience still lingered. Out of consideration for this, I had allowed her to lie in my grandfather's coffin for a while after his passing. As for Ji Xiaoying, I temporarily stored her within a talisman.
There was a purpose behind placing Wu Shengxiu in my grandfather's coffin.
My grandfather's coffin was no ordinary one; it was inscribed with runes on all sides and designed to be warm in winter and cool in summer. It had good ventilation and even mechanisms to prevent pests from entering.
The runes inside the coffin were all high-quality Supernatural Scriptures. My grandfather had thought ahead that if he passed away and both Fatty and I were too busy to handle his affairs, we could simply lie down in the coffin and be guided to wherever he needed to go.
The runes could dispel the resentment of Evil Spirits, reducing Wu Shengxiu's hatred bit by bit.
Although Wu Shengxiu wanted to become a Ghostly Spirit, her malevolence wasn’t enough for her transformation. However, when she entered this coffin, she still managed to endure the excruciating test of the Exorcism runes that penetrated deep into her bones.
I had a premonition that with that tiny spark of conscience deep within Wu Shengxiu, she might experience a miracle and gain the chance for reincarnation.
I stood frozen before my grandfather's dark coffin, unsure of what would happen if I awakened Wu Shengxiu at this moment.
After hesitating for a moment, I ultimately decided not to awaken her. I glanced at the Exorcism Talisman I had affixed to the coffin and turned back towards the house.
"What? You want to put Grandpa's body in another coffin?" Fatty firmly disagreed, insisting that I immediately clear out Grandpa's Ice Coffin and properly lay him to rest.
Other coffins were not refrigerated; they were merely places where I occasionally lay down to think.
"Look, Grandpa's body is still soft. Even though there’s no pulse, we can’t definitively say he’s truly dead. If he’s in a state of suspended animation and we put him in the Ice Coffin, that could lead to serious trouble."
Fatty was easy to convince.
In my opinion, he was all brawn and no brains, possessing nothing but brute strength.
Hearing this, Fat scratched his scalp and nodded with a grimace, "You make a point, Sparrow." Damn it, I hated being called Sparrow. He used to have Grandpa to back him up, but now that Grandpa lay lifeless on the bed, I couldn't tolerate him any longer.
Without thinking, I grabbed his collar. His eyes widened in panic. "What do you want to do?"
"I want you to accompany Grandpa in death."
At my words, Fat turned pale with fear and waved his hands frantically. "No way! I don't have a wife yet! You can't just take my life like that! Grandpa will come back and beat you up!"
"No way! Grandpa loved you the most. If you don't accompany him, he'll be lonely."
I pushed Fat toward Grandpa's side. They were almost touching faces, and his complexion turned a shade of liver as he begged for mercy. "Brother Qi, I'll listen to you from now on! Please don't do this!"
That's exactly what I wanted to hear.
When Grandpa was alive, he let Fat have his way. I couldn't hit him when he called me Sparrow; I had to endure his insults and bullying. Now, I was the boss, and Fat had to bow his head and work quietly.
I released my grip and coldly said, "You pick up Grandpa and put him in the coffin. I need to prepare for Ji Xiaoying's funeral."
I was preparing for Ji Xiaoying's funeral arrangements, but in reality, I wanted to investigate Chi Zhi Ping's current situation.
I heard that Wu Shengxiu was quite influential regarding Chi Zhi Ping.
He was also part of the Top Ten Youth.
And then there was that time he went to jail for taking the fall for someone else; afterward, he received immense gratitude from that person and soared to win the honor of being one of the Top Ten Youth.
We weren't in an office; we could only help ghosts until the end.
Wu Shengxiu transformed into an Evil Spirit seeking revenge but failed due to Chi Zhi Ping's complicated background and the assistance of powerful allies.
This matter is a bit tricky.
I sat cross-legged beside my grandfather's coffin, deep in thought.
The candlelight flickered, casting shadows on the mottled walls of the dark room, the reflections trembling.
Fat arrived at the door of the dark room and gently knocked, "Brother Qi, I'm going to sleep for a while."
"Go ahead!"
This was nice; Fat had never spoken to me so submissively before. It felt good this time.
I stood up and addressed the coffin, "Wu Shengxiu, you love Zhou Xiao. Would you like me to bring him to see you?"
Wu Shengxiu in the coffin responded with a soft "mm."
"If you have the chance to reincarnate, would you be willing to cooperate with me for your soul's liberation?"
"I would."
Next, I needed to summon Zhou Xiao's spirit.
Those who commit suicide by jumping from heights have lost their souls and wander aimlessly. Unless someone performs a ritual to guide them, they cannot reach the City of the Wronged Dead and wait for their natural lifespan to end before having a chance to reincarnate.
Zhou Xiao's birth date and time were provided by Wu Shengxiu.
I formed hand seals and chanted incantations—
A chilling wind swept through, and soon after, the door creaked open.
I didn't need to turn around to know that Zhou Xiao had arrived.
"Did you call for me?"
"You are filled with guilt, hitting walls everywhere, with nowhere to go, wandering alone in the Yin-Yang Realm. Sigh! If I had known it would come to this, why did I bother in the first place?"
"Who are you? How do you know so much about me?"
I couldn't help but notice that Zhou Xiao was quite handsome. Even as a Deadbeat, he was still a striking ghost. He was furious, his face pale and blood oozing from his seven orifices as he glared at me.
"Don't scare me. I've seen so many dead people that I'm numb to it. It's not me looking for you; it's her."
"Who?"
I walked over to the coffin, peeled off the Exorcism Talisman, and opened the Coffin Lid.
