"I can't let her succeed!" I clenched my fists and said angrily.
While I was speaking with my grandfather, that woman noticed us.
"You old fool, you finally came back!" she sneered, cursing at us.
"My daughter died so pitifully; I'm taking you home right now!"
"Not a chance!" Grandfather scoffed.
"What did you say?"
"Do you believe I’ll call the police and have you arrested?" The woman pointed at Grandfather, shouting.
"Call the police?" Grandfather chuckled coldly. "Take a good look at this document; does it say anywhere that the body should be handed over to you after retrieval?"
He pulled out the document and waved it in front of her.
"You..." The woman's expression changed, leaving her speechless.
Indeed, the document only stated that Grandfather was to go for Body Retrieval, without mentioning that the corpse was to be given to her.
"Fine, old man, so you're playing this game with me, huh?" The woman’s eyes glinted as she spoke with a cold smile. "I'll show you what happens when you try to outsmart me!"
With that, she gestured to the man in black behind her.
"Go, kill these two bastards!"
At her command, the man in black stepped forward with heavy strides. He charged at me and Grandfather like a black bear.
"Grandpa, get out of the way!" I pushed him aside, preparing to confront this Corpse Puppet.
"What are you doing? Are you trying to get yourself killed?" Grandfather exclaimed in shock as he hurriedly grabbed my arm.
"But Grandpa, didn't you say this jade pendant can protect me?" I asked, pulling out the pendant in confusion.
"The pendant can only offer protection; if you fight this Corpse Puppet, you're just asking for death!" Grandfather replied exasperatedly.
"Huh?" It dawned on me what he meant just as the Corpse Puppet reached me.
He raised his fist and swung it toward my chest with full force.
I couldn't dodge in time and was sent flying by a punch.
A sharp pain shot through my chest, and I was propelled five or six meters away.
"That hurts!"
I clutched my chest, unable to suppress a cry of agony.
It felt like several of my bones had broken, and my organs had shifted out of place.
"Get out of the way!"
Grandpa rushed over and pulled me aside.
The Corpse Puppet swung its fist down towards him.
Grandpa raised his cane, trying to block the blow from the Corpse Puppet.
But the Corpse Puppet's strength was overwhelming; it shattered Grandpa's cane and continued its assault toward his head.
"Grandpa!"
My vision blurred with rage as I struggled to rush forward to save him.
At that moment, the village chief's son and a group of villagers charged in.
They picked up stones from the ground and hurled them at the Corpse Puppet.
However, the Corpse Puppet showed no sign of pain, allowing the stones to hit without flinching.
"Quick, get the fishing net!"
The village chief's son shouted loudly.
Several villagers produced a fishing net they had prepared earlier and ensnared the Corpse Puppet from behind.
"Dad, hurry and use the loudspeaker to call for help!"
The village chief's son yelled again.
"Okay!"
The village chief nodded and grabbed a loudspeaker, calling out to the entire village.
"Attention villagers, someone is causing trouble in our village!"
"Everyone hurry to Grandpa Zhou Tai's house! We need help!"
He shouted several times in succession.
Soon, a cacophony of footsteps echoed down the village street.
"What’s going on?"
"Is there trouble?"
"Who dares to cause a ruckus in our village?"
"Damn it, they must be tired of living; let’s deal with them!"
In no time, hundreds of villagers gathered at Grandpa's doorstep.
Armed with hoes, wooden sticks, shovels, and other tools, they surrounded the woman and the Corpse Puppet.
"What... what do you want?"
The woman's face turned pale as she shouted in terror.
With a roar, the villagers charged forward.
Some struck at the Corpse Puppet with hoes while others lashed out at the woman with sticks.
Before long, she was left bruised and battered.
The woman and the Corpse Puppet fled in a disheveled manner, rolling and scrambling away from the village.
"Looks like we need to perform a Soul Summoning Ritual to find out what happened to your brother," Grandpa sighed.
"Summoning souls?" I was slightly taken aback.
"Yes."
Grandpa set up the Altar at home.
He instructed me to hold the Soul Banner, which bore the names and birth dates of the two individuals, and we made our way to the crossroads.
At the crossroads, he placed four candles and began to wave the Soul Banner.
"Heavenly Clarity and Earthly Spirit, soldiers follow orders, troops turn with the seal, obeying commands, I invoke the decree of the Maoshan Patriarch, urgent as the law commands!"
"Zhou Tian, Zhou Tian, return home!"
"Liu Li, Liu Li, return home!"
As Grandpa waved the Soul Banner, he shouted their names.
With his movements, the air around us grew colder.
The flames of the four candles flickered as if they were about to extinguish at any moment.
I quickly lit four incense sticks, placed them in the incense burner, and stepped back.
"Symbols rise, orders are carried out, troops turn with commands, I beseech the Five Ghosts of Zhongfang—Yao Bisong; the Five Ghosts of Beifang—Lin Jingzhong; the Five Ghosts of Xifang—Cai Ziliang; the Five Ghosts of Nanfang—Zhang Zigui; and the Five Ghosts of Dongfang—Chen Yuanzai; descend swiftly to the mortal realm! If there is something to request, come quickly! Hear my command and act swiftly!"
Grandpa scattered a handful of Joss Paper and covered the Yellow Talisman inscribed with their birth dates with a Bagua Mirror.
Then he poured chicken blood over the Bagua Mirror, allowing it to drip slowly into a bowl.
Grandpa picked up a brush and made a mark on the eyes of the two Paper Men.
