The next day, Susan arrived at the company with her brother, Johnny Blaze, walking into Shasha's office amidst the surprised gazes of her colleagues.
Many were discussing Johnny Blaze, speculating about who he really was. Most believed he was a friend of Susan's, some thought he might be her boyfriend, and very few considered him to be her brother.
Wanda Maximoff was among that small minority. She couldn't fathom why Susan would bring her brother to the office. Was she introducing him for a job? It seemed possible, but Shasha was known for her strictness; how could she accept such nepotism?
As Wanda Maximoff pondered these thoughts, Susan emerged from the office with Johnny Blaze, one deep in thought and the other casual.
After the siblings stepped outside, Wanda secretly followed them, noticing they stopped at a corner outside the office building, seemingly engaged in a discussion.
Getting closer, she overheard their conversation.
"I wasn't sure at first, but now I can say for certain—he definitely has feelings for you," Johnny Blaze said with an air of experience. "Think about it: why would he help you out of the blue? Reed's project has been in the works for years and has failed to secure any investors. But as soon as you got involved, he asked just a few questions and agreed. Isn't that a sign he likes you? Plus, just look at how he treated me earlier; it shows what he thinks of you."
Susan found his reasoning compelling. Upon reflection, it did seem true; his trust in her felt almost like that of a superior towards a subordinate. Yet, the more she thought about it, the more uncomfortable she felt. Whenever personal matters arose, she needed clarity. She was very particular about relationships; ambiguity made her uneasy.
"So what should I do?" This was the first time she had asked her brother for advice on such matters—after all, this guy had probably dated more people than she had eaten meals.
"If it were me," Johnny Blaze replied, "I wouldn't reveal that you know his feelings just yet. Wait until the moment is right when he confesses to you."
At this point, Wanda Maximoff could no longer listen; disappointment washed over her face.
Returning to her own office, Wanda appeared distracted, frequently glancing toward Shasha's office.
It wasn't until she heard someone call her name that she hurried into Shasha's office but couldn't muster the courage to meet her gaze.
Noticing Wanda's unusual demeanor, Shasha couldn't help but ask, "What's wrong? Did something happen?"
"Nothing... nothing at all," Wanda Maximoff waved her hand dismissively and forced a smile. "I just worked late last night and didn't sleep well."
"Is that so? Why don't you finish up your work early and get some rest?"
Hearing Shasha's concern warmed Wanda's heart, but it quickly turned bittersweet.
"By the way, Wanda Maximoff, please record this person's information. He is Susan's brother and will be joining the latest project."
Hearing Shasha's words, Wanda Maximoff couldn't help but ask, "Sir, didn't you say you hated nepotism?"
"I do hate nepotism, but the prerequisite is that the person must have ability. Susan's brother graduated with excellent grades from Columbia University, which is why I decided to hire him." Shasha noticed the expression on Wanda Maximoff's face and suddenly smiled, "Actually, I know your brother as well. He's a good guy. If he's interested, he could work for our company too."
At this point, Wanda Maximoff was taken aback. What did this mean? Was it possible that the sir wasn't hiring him just because he liked Susan?
"I heard your brother has already entered MIT, right?" Shasha asked.
Wanda Maximoff nodded. "Yes, sir. He is still studying there."
Since she took this job, the lives of the siblings had gotten back on track. They no longer lived in secrecy or joined so-called armed organizations. However, with gains came losses; their abilities were now far inferior to their former selves.
Perhaps it didn't matter much for Quicksilver, but for Scarlet Witch, it felt like a waste of talent.
It was clearly impossible to watch her squander her potential like this, so Shasha planned to find an opportunity to develop her abilities.
With that thought in mind, Shasha pondered for a moment and said, "Wanda Maximoff, I want to ask you if you're interested in changing your work environment?"
Wanda Maximoff was taken aback by his words and then turned pale. "Sir, are you trying to get rid of me?"
Seeing her nearly on the verge of tears, Shasha quickly waved his hand. "No, you've misunderstood my intention. I think it's a waste of your talent to be managing these trivial matters."
Talent? What did the sir mean by that?
Wanda Maximoff looked at Shasha with uncertainty. "Sir, you..."
"Actually, from the moment you arrived, I knew you weren't an ordinary person," Shasha smiled reassuringly. "Don't worry; I'm not one of those who shout about burning mutants alive. You should know that I..."
He lightly curled his right index finger, and a vibration filled the air.
Feeling the tremor in the atmosphere, Wanda Maximoff's eyes lit up. "So you are also..."
She originally thought that she was very far from Shasha, but unexpectedly, they were so close, even closer than Susan.
Thinking of this, Wanda Maximoff's expression returned to normal as she took a deep breath. "Sir, what do you want me to do?"
In that brief moment, she had thought it through clearly. Since Shasha could be so honest, why should she care about what kind of work it was? As long as she was needed, that was enough.
Living meant searching for one's own value, and being needed by others was also a manifestation of that value.
Moreover, it allowed her to access secrets about him that others did not know.
Seeing Wanda like this made Shasha feel a bit reluctant. Becoming the Scarlet Witch meant facing battles in the future. Wanda had once led a carefree life, but was it worth it to sacrifice that for her own selfish desires?
In the end, Shasha sighed.
