Chris's chosen escape route was perplexing, leaving Shasha and Erika with no clues for a while. As dawn approached, with faint sunlight about to break through the clouds, the two almost decided to give up when they unexpectedly found a discarded dollar bill.
In the wilderness, a not-so-old dollar bill lay on the ground, and Shasha couldn't think of anyone else but Chris.
As Erika bent down, puzzled and ready to pick up the bill, Shasha stopped her. "Wait, you’ll ruin the remaining clues."
Erika paused, then asked in confusion, "It's just a bill. At most, it proves that guy was here. Can you really figure out which way he left from where the bill fell?"
Shasha remained silent, simply observing where the bill lay quietly before her. She began analyzing the angle at which it had fallen and where it aligned best. This was one of Liquid Snake's abilities—superior insight and simulation skills.
Before long, Shasha confirmed the direction and pointed north. "Over there."
Erika listened skeptically. However, after following Shasha for a short distance, they found another bill lying quietly on the ground, almost like a signpost. This time, her expression changed; she looked at Shasha with newfound respect.
Although Erika had been trained as an assassin and possessed various qualities of one, each skill had its specialty. When it came to intelligence gathering, infiltration, assassination, and situational awareness, Liquid Snake undoubtedly excelled.
When one person observes another accomplishing what they cannot do themselves, feelings of jealousy or admiration often arise.
Erika felt no jealousy; all she felt was admiration.
"You don't need to look at me like that; you just have to observe more closely," Shasha guided Erika toward the direction she had determined as they walked slowly.
Erika shook her head in response. "At least among the people I know, no one has your level of insight."
Shasha instinctively opened her mouth to say, "Isn't Daredevil like that?" but she halted in her tracks.
Erika noticed the sudden seriousness on Shasha's face and asked, "What did you discover?"
Shasha was observing their surroundings. They were in a valley, surrounded by hills, which felt eerily quiet.
"It's too quiet. I just realized that throughout our journey, aside from our conversation, we can hardly hear any other sounds. There are many creatures in the wilderness; it’s impossible for there to be complete silence."
Upon hearing this, Erika also recognized the issue. She quietly gripped her steel spike, entering a state of alertness to prepare for any unexpected situations.
"I suspect someone deliberately led us here, and Chris is most likely in that guy's hands." After inheriting everything from Liquid Snake, Shasha had also inherited his intelligence. In the past, she might have sensed something was off but would never have thought it was a deliberate trap.
"Target Eye?" Erika instinctively guessed who it was, as only that person would choose to make a comeback.
Shasha nodded and drew her pistol from her waist, shouting into the empty wilderness, "I know you're here. We've arrived. If you want to hide, go ahead; I will find you and take you down myself!"
Her voice echoed, and after a moment, a low chuckle responded, "That's the best joke I've heard. To me, you're just a slightly stronger ant; I could crush you anytime."
"But it's this ant that has hurt you. You must have never been injured before, right?" Shasha teased. "Such a powerful being like you getting hurt by an ant must be infuriating for you, right? You must feel quite unwilling to accept it."
"Shut up! If I weren't playing with you guys, do you think you'd still be alive?" The angry voice revealed how furious Target Eye was from the shadows. But then he suddenly laughed again. "I know what you're trying to do; you want to provoke me into revealing myself. I won't fall for it. If you want to find that guy, you'll have to rely on your own strength!"
As his words faded, silence enveloped the area.
Shasha could only shake her head in resignation; no one capable of being a killer was foolish, and there were no idiots in the Marvel Universe.
"What do we do now?" The decisive Erika seemed to choose to follow Shasha's lead at that moment.
Shasha noticed the change but didn't pay it much mind. She honestly shared her thoughts, "That guy must have put Chris in a very safe place. The reason he went to such lengths to lure us here is to hunt us down as his prey. However, hunters have a common flaw; they tend to leave traps or obvious hints to showcase their abilities. So we can use this as our breakthrough."
Erika nodded, acknowledging that Shasha was indeed correct; she had encountered such people before.
"Target Eye is essentially a self-centered lunatic. If I were him, I would definitely be watching from an unexpected yet reasonable location, ready to give my prey a 'surprise' when they least expect it."
Just as those words left her lips, there was a slight rustle above them in the treetops.
As if she had known all along, Shasha raised her gun and shot without hesitation at that spot.
Bang!
The sound of the gunshot echoed, and a figure leaped out from the treetops.
