The strands of hair brushed against my neck, blurring my memories. I felt that she was my wife, beautiful and enchanting. A close glance revealed the lovely curve of her lips as she gently kissed mine. This surreal sensation was strange and ethereal! A wave of suffocating discomfort washed over me, and instinctively, I moved my arms. Suddenly awakening, I opened my eyes to find all illusions vanished, and I felt a bubble of saliva trickling from the corner of my lips. A lobster startled by my awakening scuttled away, its antennae twitching as it leaped into a mass of floating aquatic creatures. 0

As I came to, dazed and bewildered, I couldn't recall what era this was or how long I had been asleep here. I only vaguely remembered the universe ablaze with fire, a colossal star exploding with such force that it pulled me into a black hole's vortex... It was this chain around my neck that had dragged me down into this unknown body of water, where I perished... After what felt like countless years, I awoke again. 0

The year was 2035—April 10th, 2050, at exactly 9:08 AM. The temperature was moderate; there was no sun, and the sky was ominously overcast. 0

A heavy combat vehicle sped along the rugged mountain road, its rumbling vibrations startling birds resting in the trees by the roadside. 0

Inside the combat vehicle sat several young faces—recent graduates from some university. The cramped space felt stifling, filled with an oppressive sense of anxiety and suffocation. 0

The young students had little thought for the future. Naive and inexperienced, they still enjoyed joking and playing around. Occasionally glancing outside at the desolation beyond, a flicker of surprise crossed their eyes before they returned to teasing another classmate. 0

The boy being teased turned crimson with embarrassment, unsure of how to respond. He looked at his seniors with a mix of shyness and anger but soon lowered his head in resignation, too intimidated to speak! His mind was preoccupied with a strange and perplexing question. 0

Before boarding this vehicle, he couldn't recall how he had joined the volunteer group in any form. His name was Xiao Qiang, from the Chemistry Department. As he looked down, his thick eyebrows stirred slightly; his exquisitely shaped nose twitched at the sides while he stubbornly pressed his thin lips together... 0

Lost in thought, he tried to ignore the noise around him. He wondered: Do I have family? Where are my parents? The memories were hazy and fragmented, making it impossible to piece together a complete picture. 0

“Xiao Qiang, you’re having this for lunch today…” said a classmate grinning while holding a glass container. His suggestion immediately drew responses from others… 0

Xiao Qiang's thoughts were interrupted as he stared nervously at the tiny Bloodline Worms floating inside the glass container, instinctively leaning back… 0

“You weak freak, hahaha.” The tall boy who mocked him laughed heartily, casually picking his nose. He wiped his finger on his pants leg with a flourish, provoking discontent from another girl. 0

“Wen Kai, you’re going too far.” A playful reprimand halted Wen Kai's antics. Xiao Qiang looked up gratefully at the senior who had come to his aid and nodded in appreciation. 0

The senior was the belle of the Chemistry Department, the kind of girl you wouldn't forget after just one glance. Her name was Lin Yu. In front of numerous admirers, she maintained a low profile, rejecting all advances from males with an indifferent attitude. 0

"You’re disgusting. Why would you keep such a parasite around?" a classmate protested. 0

"Please, you all like cats and dogs as pets, but I prefer this little creature that crawled out of an anus," Wen Kai said boldly, his provocative gaze directed at Xiao Qiang, who had been silent with his head down. 0

"By the way, have you heard about the bizarre incident a few years ago when someone used mutated creatures against our allies?" A classmate recalled the strange events that occurred during a recent terrifying war when Bloodworms were mentioned. 0

"What happened?" Wen Kai asked, intrigued. 0

Xiao Qiang perked up his ears, silently listening. 0

"I’ve heard about it too. The enemy didn’t use any soldiers; they just put these things into our allies' water supply..." The classmate's expression changed as he recalled the horrifying scene from back then. 0

"What happened next?" someone pressed on. 0

"Well, it was terrifying... It’s said that the entire garrison on that island was wiped out. Besides some tattered uniforms, their bones were nowhere to be found." 0

"Alright, let’s not talk about this anymore..." Lin Yu noticed Xiao Qiang's face turning pale upon hearing this and quickly stopped the discussion. 0

It was clear that Xiao Qiang was very frightened; she knew what he feared. After all, their internship destination was that legendary deserted island where the entire garrison had perished! 0

The specially designed military Combat Vehicle was covered by a layer of soft, green protective shielding. The body was made from copper alloy composite materials, soundproofed and capable of withstanding short-range fire from the latest fourth-generation AUG submachine guns. 0

Led by team leader Lin Yu, the fourth volunteer squad set out to observe and learn from the research results of scientists who had previously stationed on the island. There were five of them in total, and before departure, each signed a Life-and-Death Contract. 0

Of course, the meaning of signing the Life-and-Death Contract is primarily to ensure confidentiality. Ultimately, they will only be able to return home after successfully completing their planned tasks and locating the missing individuals on the island, along with gathering reliable data. 0

The so-called home has become an empty house with no one inside. The shadows cast by the various harms of war weigh heavily on people's hearts like a rock, and without military confirmation of safety, no one is willing to take the risk of returning home. 0

Their family members, friends, and other human groups reside in the Stratum. This is a regression that humanity never anticipated during the era when they became high-tech slaves. Many years ago, geologists discovered traceable human footprints in the Stratum dating back over 500 million years. 0

War seems to have become a thing of the past, with multiple races facing a precarious fate; no one is low enough to provoke unnecessary conflict during their flight. 0

In the generation of their grandparents, scientists made precise calculations. Since 2014, if nothing unexpected occurs, humanity could still inhabit Earth for another 1.75 billion years. 0

On the eve of war breaking out, humanity, driven by self-interest, not only generated waste but also deliberately created sources of pollution. As a result, the time humans could live on Earth suddenly shortened… 0

The five of them had never experienced war nor seen the unique neon lights of a big city. They grew up in nursery boxes, some not even knowing who their parents were. 0

They also had another rather cool title: War Orphans! 0

Xiao Qiang remained silent, lost in his chaotic thoughts as he contemplated Wen Kai's earlier threats. The sight of the bloodworms in the glass vessel, resembling strands of hair, made him feel uneasy and nauseous. 0

Unconsciously, he linked the perverse Wen Kai's pet to the missing persons on the island. The thought of those bodies crawling with thin, red, slimy bloodworms sent an inexplicable chill down his spine. 0

But then he reconsidered; it didn’t make sense. If the legends were true, how could such tiny bloodline worms possibly consume so many bodies overnight? 0
