In the midst of the conversation, the woman displayed a pitiful expression. Seeing this, I was momentarily at a loss for how to react, standing there in a daze.
However, Yao Long coldly remarked, "You just wanted that person to kill us, and now you're putting on this act. Are you not clearly telling us that you want to set us up? We aren't foolish enough to fall for this..."
"Don't mind her, let's go!" With that, Yao Long turned to leave. At that moment, the woman hurried a few steps forward and called out to me, "No, that's not it! I was forced..."
Hearing her voice, a surge of killing intent emanated from Yao Long. He abruptly turned around and shot an arrow that landed right beside the foot she was about to step forward with. He growled fiercely, "I warn you, it's already merciful of me not to kill you. If you come any closer, don't blame me for being rude!"
Although I felt somewhat dazed from lack of sleep, I could still sense that something was amiss. Even so, I decided to hear what the woman had to say; perhaps she could provide some relevant clues.
With that thought in mind, I gestured for Yao Long to calm down and said, "Alright then, if you want us to take you with us, give me a good reason. If your reason satisfies me, I might consider bringing you along."
Upon hearing this, the woman hesitated slightly. I urged her on, "So? What's it going to be? We can spend our time here waiting."
"Okay, I..." she replied decisively. "Actually, I'm a native of this village. Later on, some bandits came and killed everyone in the village. To survive, I agreed to help them with their murderous and thieving activities..."
Hearing this made me inwardly sigh at how poorly crafted her story was. Just based on her use of Gu Technique alone, how could those ordinary bandits possibly threaten her?
I didn't interrupt her but patiently listened as she continued. "The bones you saw in the house were actually the remains of the previous residents of this village; they were ruthlessly slaughtered by those bandits..." She paused slightly here, looking as if she wanted to say more but hesitated.
After a moment's hesitation, she spoke again: "I believe you've noticed that I can use some Gu Technique. However, even so, I'm still no match for the Bandit Leader. He uses a strange kind of witchcraft; every time I'm about to use my poison against him, he discovers it and ultimately..."
At this point, she suddenly knelt down with a thud and covered her face as she began to cry. The originally beautiful woman now looked even more pitiful with tears streaming down her face. However, this did not make me forget that she had just tried to kill us. So I asked her, "With your abilities, even if you can't kill him outright, escaping should still be possible for you, right?"
I voiced my doubts to see how she would respond. To my surprise, upon hearing my words, her cries grew even more sorrowful as she said, "You don't understand! The Bandit Leader placed a curse on me because he fears I might escape. No matter where I go, he can sense me. Each time I try to flee, he always catches me and brings me back. That's why I want you to take me away from here..."
Though her words did not completely alleviate my concerns, I thought about it and realized that if she intended to set us up for harm, keeping her close would allow us to monitor her actions more easily than if she were lurking in the shadows planning an attack against us. Moreover, if what she said was true, then taking her along would undoubtedly save a life.
Thinking of this, I looked at Yao Long. At that moment, Yao Long seemed uncertain. He was skilled in combat and tracking clues, but whenever it came to making such decisions, he was as confused as a monk who couldn't find his way.
"What do you think?" I asked, fully aware that Yao Long was in the dark, but I wanted to see if he had noticed any clues.
To my surprise, Yao Long shook his head in confusion. "I'm not good at making these kinds of decisions. You should decide..." Seeing him change from his previous resolute attitude, I realized he might have some belief in that woman.
"Alright then, we'll take her with us..." I patted Yao Long on the shoulder and gave him a glance, signaling him to be cautious. I wasn't sure if Yao Long understood my meaning, but he nodded thoughtfully.
When the woman heard my agreement to take her along, she was overjoyed and quickly got up to thank me repeatedly.
Seeing this, I said, "Since I've agreed to let you come with us, you need to tell us about the original situation in this village and the bandits so we can come up with an effective response."
She wiped her tears and promised, "I will definitely tell you everything I know..."
"Good. Now I need you to tell us where would be safer?" I asked.
"There’s an abandoned house behind the village. Inside it is a basement that the bandits don’t know about; I've never hidden there before..." she replied.
"Alright, lead us there..."
With that, Yao Long and I followed the woman toward the place she mentioned. Along the way, I kept a vigilant eye on her every move, fearing she might suddenly turn on us, while Yao Long was responsible for checking if there were any bandits around.
After some winding paths, we arrived at the entrance of the house she mentioned. The dilapidated door fell to the ground with a loud crash as we pushed it open, shattering into countless pieces and filling the air with dust.
Covering my mouth and nose, I followed the woman inside. She glanced around before finding an old wooden key from a rickety shelf and then led us to a back room.
"This is it..." she pointed at a locked cabinet inside the room.
Due to the heavy smoke and dust in the room, I couldn't speak; I merely nodded slightly, indicating for her to open it.
Seeing this, she responded with a soft agreement and walked over to the cabinet door. With a click, the lock on the cabinet was released, and she pulled the door open.
At that moment, a dark entrance appeared before me. Looking up, I saw a staircase sloping downward into an unfathomable darkness.
"Below is my place. Should we go down?" the woman said softly.
I fell into deep thought. "It's still unclear whether this woman is friend or foe. If I rashly enter such a place with her, it could be detrimental to us. Moreover, she has some kind of curse on her; no matter where she goes, she will be discovered. If we hide with her, we would undoubtedly be caught..."
After pondering for a long time, Yao Long noticed my silence and asked, "What's wrong? Are we going down?"
Without directly answering Yao Long, I muttered to myself, "It seems that we can't just go down like this, but not going down isn't an option either. The situation is unclear; if we just go out like this, it might be even worse for us... Is there really no other way?"
