First, someone mysteriously had their arm bitten off in the middle of the night, but strangely, when he woke up, he had no idea what had happened.
Later, a doctor was called in, and after multiple diagnoses, it was suspected to be pica. At first, everyone believed it to be true, thinking the person had contracted some strange illness. However, as more and more people began to exhibit similar symptoms, many couldn't bear it any longer and left the town. Only a few elderly residents and those of us who were in business were left with no choice but to stay.
Every night at midnight, people would start running into the streets to eat themselves. This bizarre behavior continued until noon the next day. Out of fear, no one dared to go out during the day; only after six in the evening would some venture out to buy daily necessities.
Most of the children who went to school and those who worked had left this town, returning only during holidays. Some even decided never to come back, leading to this once poor but lively town falling into such despair.
After hearing all this, I realized how strange it was. However, due to my mission, I didn't linger too long. I intended to tell Mr. Death about this later, but since the mission took so long, I had completely forgotten about it until now.
Yao Long showed an embarrassed expression.
"If what you say is true, then this place is indeed suspicious. But if you don't know what it's called, how are we supposed to find it?" I asked.
Death Apostle chimed in, "Yeah, without a place name, are there any distinguishing features?"
Yao Long pondered for a moment. "Features... I can't remember much, but I do recall the route we took during that previous mission. If we follow that route again, we should be able to find that town."
"Well, while it's a bit troublesome, it's still a good plan. It's just that..." I hesitated.
"Just what?" Death Apostle asked.
"Just that Li Zhisheng is still in the hospital, and we don't know if the Void Spirit implanted in Hu Fang will harm her. We haven't even thought of a solution yet; our only clue is some experimental footage," I said as I got up and paced around the room.
"I feel like we're missing someone; oh right, it's Li Zhisheng who's not here. How is he doing? Is it serious?"
At that moment, Death Apostle surprisingly expressed concern for Li Zhisheng, which caught me off guard. "He's fine; he just has a broken bone in his hand and needs surgery for a steel plate. Reluctantly, I had no choice but to leave him in the hospital."
Upon hearing this, the Death Apostle pondered for a moment and said, "How about this? You've been back for a while now, so take me to see Li Zhisheng. Yao Long, you stay here and keep an eye on Hu Fang. If anything comes up, just call us..." He took out his phone and handed it to Yao Long, saying, "Shen Xu's number is in there; you can call him directly when the time comes." With that, he stood up and prepared to leave.
I thought to myself that it made sense. Since returning, everyone had eaten except for Li Zhisheng; he must be starving by now. With that in mind, I followed the Death Apostle out.
On the way, I bought a few trays of buns and some vegetables for Li Zhisheng before arriving at the hospital.
As we reached the door of the ward, I could hear Li Zhisheng's voice inside. Although I couldn't make out what he was saying due to the muffled sound, he seemed to be talking about something quite cheerful.
I murmured in confusion, "Has Li Zhisheng gone crazy? There’s no one he knows in this hospital, and he doesn’t seem to like dealing with strangers."
Turning around to stand at the door and peering inside, I saw Li Zhisheng animatedly chatting with a girl in the bed next to him. He didn’t even notice me and the Death Apostle standing at the entrance.
Seeing this, I cleared my throat a couple of times. Hearing the noise, Li Zhisheng turned his head and exclaimed, "Oh! Shen Xu, why are you back? I thought you wouldn't come until tomorrow."
I walked over to his bedside with the food in hand. "I was worried you hadn't eaten yet, so I brought you something."
To my surprise, Li Zhisheng replied with a chuckle, "Oh, I forgot to tell you! I've already eaten. This beautiful girl over here helped me get my meal." He pointed at a girl sitting on the bed next to him who was smiling at me.
She had long black hair cascading down her shoulders and delicate features with a hint of blush on her cheeks that made her look quite adorable. She wore a hospital gown, and three of her fingers on her left hand were wrapped in thick bandages; it seemed she had injured her fingers.
"You really are something," I scolded Li Zhisheng softly. "Look at how injured her fingers are, and you still made her get your food. Your legs are fine; it's just one hand that's not working. Honestly..."
He chuckled sheepishly and said, "Well, she was being kind enough to help me; it would have been rude to refuse."
After hearing this, I chose not to engage further with him and turned to the girl in the adjacent bed. "Thank you for taking care of my friend..."
I placed the food I brought on the bedside table. "Since he has already eaten, let this be a token of my gratitude for taking care of him..."
The girl waved her hands repeatedly. "I didn't do much; it was just a small effort. You don't need to be so polite..." Seeing her trying to decline, I smiled and said, "Then I'll leave it here. You two can eat it whenever you want." Then I looked at her hand. "What happened? How did you hurt your finger?"
The moment I asked that question, her expression darkened instantly, the shift so rapid that it caught me off guard, and the atmosphere around us became tense.
Behind me, Li Zhisheng tugged at my sleeve with his active hand and whispered, "Don't bring up her sad story. I just asked her once, and she fell silent for a while. I finally managed to make her laugh, and now you're asking again..."
Given how close the two beds were, even a whisper could be easily heard. At that moment, the girl seemed to have heard Li Zhisheng's words. She raised her bandaged finger and slowly began to unwrap one of the bandages, saying softly, "Since you're all so curious, I'll let you see..."
Hearing her speak like that made me feel there was more to her injury than met the eye. At this point, not just Li Zhisheng and I, but even Death Apostle behind us was staring intently at the girl.
As she gradually unwrapped the bandage, a small white object began to reveal itself at her fingertip. At first glance, I thought it was plaster, but to my surprise, it turned out to be a piece of bone...
