The moment my hand touched the ground, I sensed something unusual. I quickly withdrew my hand and, using the light from my phone, saw some black powder on it. My heart leaped with joy.
"So, the workers from before must have made a fire here and left some charcoal," I thought excitedly, grabbing a long piece of charcoal and began writing in my notebook.
Just as I was engrossed in writing by the light of my phone, a dead maggot fell from above and landed right on my hand. I was so focused that I didn't react immediately; I intended to shake it off and continue writing. But as soon as I lifted my hand, an electric shock seemed to course through my mind. Looking up, I saw the Vengeful Spirit that had possessed Hu Fang crouching behind me, its gaping mouth wide open, holding a large stone slab ready to smash down on me.
In a panic, I held the Sheepskin Book in my left hand, turned around, and grabbed the Vengeful Spirit's leg with my right hand, pulling it down hard. It tumbled into the pit, and the stone slab it held fell with a loud thud beside me, nearly crushing me.
Seeing it fall and still dazed, I scrambled out of the pit and ran toward the previous room, thinking I could hide there for a while. But then I realized, "No, that room is too cramped. While the Vengeful Spirit can't pass through walls, it's incredibly strong. If it breaks in, I'll be trapped." With that thought in mind, I circled around the building, searching for a place to hide as I ran.
Suddenly, a large rock whizzed past me and crashed heavily against the wall ahead. The sound suggested it had shattered into pieces. Before I could process what had just happened, several more stones flew toward me. "It's so open here; running like this makes me a moving target! With that kind of force, if I'm hit even once, I'll either be dead or severely injured," I thought while desperately sprinting forward.
I lost track of time as I ran; my stamina was gradually depleting. Combined with lack of sleep, fatigue set in and my speed slowed. Yet behind me, the Vengeful Spirit seemed tireless, relentlessly closing in.
Just as it was about to catch up to me, it reached out its hand to grab me. The moment its fingertip brushed against my neck, light began to emerge around me. A scream echoed behind me followed by a thud as something fell to the ground.
I hurriedly stopped and turned around to see Hu Fang lying on the ground; her face had regained its color. The terrifying visage transformed back into her charming appearance, and I finally breathed a sigh of relief.
"The Vengeful Spirit must have been driven away by the Sun God," I muttered to myself while catching my breath and preparing to help Hu Fang up. But before I could reach her, she rubbed her head and propped herself up with one hand on the ground. Seeing her able to get up reassured me that she was likely fine. I quickly asked, "Are you okay? Are you hurt anywhere?"
She rubbed her temples and shook her head. "I don't know where we are or what just happened. Why do you look like a beggar..." Glancing at my tattered clothes made me sigh deeply. Since she seemed completely unaware of everything that had just occurred, I explained everything that had happened.
After hearing my account, she stared at me in disbelief. "Really?!" I nodded affirmatively. "Absolutely true! You almost got me killed; if you don't believe me, check the footage."
"Oh right! I have the recording." She slapped her forehead as if just remembering.
We returned to the room which was now in disarray. Only the camera remained intact in the corner. Hu Fang rushed over to grab it and sat down on the floor to watch while I stood by the door—perhaps still shaken by what had transpired.
The footage seemed to only capture what happened inside the room; she finished watching it quickly and turned to me with urgency. "What exactly happened to you?!"
I pointed at my clothes. "This is how I look? Can we go home so I can change first? Then we can talk."
After leaving the abandoned factory and walking for quite some time, just when I felt utterly exhausted, we finally managed to hail a taxi. As soon as we got in, the driver joked with me: "Girl, did you pick up a beggar for a boyfriend?" Hu Fang joined in with laughter alongside him, which only fueled my irritation further. It felt as if nothing from last night’s encounter with the Vengeful Spirit had ever happened at all.
Soon, we arrived at the apartment where I lived. I told Hu Fang to wait for me downstairs while I changed my clothes, but she stubbornly insisted on coming up with me. Unable to refuse her, I agreed. I thought that if she came up, I could take the opportunity to rest a bit, as I was truly exhausted.
As I considered this, I found it a bit strange. After a night of running around and being tossed about, why did she show no signs of fatigue? Instead, she seemed full of energy.
Once we got home, she immediately spotted the Box I had taken out earlier and muttered, "Oh, what's that?" She reached out to grab it. Seeing her attempt to touch the Box startled me, and I quickly stepped in front of her before she could reach it.
I blocked her path with my body and said, "You can touch anything else, but not these things." As I spoke, I hurriedly put those items away. Perhaps due to her strong curiosity as a creative person, the more I tried to keep her from touching it, the more she insisted on wanting to see.
With no other choice, I ended up telling her everything about the Box and Yin Li. After hearing my story, she exclaimed in amazement, "How come you didn't mention you had such great material before? From now on, you'll be my source of inspiration." She chuckled mischievously.
I shook my head and thought to myself, "It seems she took my story as just that—a story—and didn't take it seriously at all." Then I reconsidered: "Well, at least this means I can bring her along for similar experiences in the future; that way, I'll have more material." With that thought in mind, I couldn't help but smile.
Seeing me smile made Hu Fang lean closer and ask, "Have you thought of something good?" I quickly cleared my throat and composed myself. "You sit for a moment; I'm going to change into something else." With that, I took the two Boxes into the room.
After changing clothes and coming out, I found her sitting on the sofa engrossed in her phone. I asked if she wanted to go home and rest for a bit. She smiled brightly and replied, "No need! I'm feeling great!" My head drooped as I thought to myself, "But I'm not feeling great at all." Though I wanted to express that sentiment, I held back and said instead, "Then I'll get some things ready; you can keep playing."
I took out the booklet and prepared to start writing. When I opened it up, I was surprised to find that the charcoal writing from before had not disappeared. "It seems like only real experiences will do," I thought as I began to write. After writing for a little while, she leaned over to look and asked, "Are you writing in that Sheepskin Book again?" I nodded and replied, "Yeah~ I'll finish soon; you just keep playing."
Upon hearing this, I noticed her expression darken for a brief moment before it quickly passed. Suddenly Hu Fang grabbed my arm and said, "I'm hungry; let's go eat something first! We haven't eaten all night." As soon as she mentioned being hungry, my stomach grumbled loudly in agreement.
Indeed, we were both hungry. Plus, since Hu Fang kept insisting on going out with me, there was no choice but to tuck my pen and booklet away and follow her outside.
We went to a relatively nice dumpling restaurant and ordered two plates of dumplings. While waiting for our food to arrive, I pulled out the booklet again intending to continue writing when Hu Fang interrupted me once more. "Don't write! Come chat with me for a bit!" she pouted.
Looking at her adorable expression made me feel uneasy instead of affectionate. Tentatively, I suggested, "Let me finish writing first; after that, I'll go wherever you want—how about that?"
To my surprise, she didn't object this time and simply smiled brightly. "Okay!" Just as those words left her lips, two steaming plates of dumplings were placed on our table. Seeing the food arrive made Hu Fang pick one up for me and say, "Eat first; then write!"
As she opened her mouth to feed me the dumpling she had picked up, I noticed a white worm fall out from her mouth. Startled nearly caused me to fall off my chair. Rubbing my eyes in disbelief and looking again, Hu Fang was now picking up another dumpling while blowing on it—there was nothing unusual about her at all.
"It must be that I'm too tired and seeing things," I thought as I started eating too.
In no time, I had devoured over thirty dumplings, my hunger truly overwhelming. I noticed Hu Fang was still eating, so I discreetly took out my notebook and placed it on my lap to write. Occasionally, I glanced at Hu Fang, worried she might catch me.
But she seemed to sense something and asked, "What are you sneaking around for?" I quickly pulled out my phone and waved it, saying, "Just playing on my phone~ Hehe." She shot me a glance and replied, "It's still on the lock screen; what are you playing?"
I turned my phone around to check and realized it was indeed locked. I hurriedly explained, "I accidentally pressed the lock button earlier, haha." "Alright, I'm full now; let's go," she said as she wiped her mouth and stood up.
Seeing this, I quickly tucked away my notebook and got up with her. "Boss, the bill please," a waiter rushed over upon hearing us. "Hello, that will be thirty yuan." I paid the bill and left the dumpling restaurant with Hu Fang. As we walked down the street, I asked, "Where are you planning to go?" She linked her arm with mine and said, "Let's go shopping!"
For a moment, it felt like we were a couple taking a stroll, but my rational mind told me something was off. No matter how open-minded one might be, this didn’t feel right. Just last night when I invited her over, she was hesitant; now her attitude had completely flipped.
As I pondered this, a sudden thought struck me: "Earlier, I mentioned the purpose of this notebook to her; now she clearly wants to stop me from finishing it! But why doesn’t she just reveal her true self and kill me? Is it because of the sunlight? So she can’t show herself directly and has to control Hu Fang to prevent me!"
Suddenly everything became clear to me, yet I felt powerless. It was as if I was walking alongside a ticking time bomb on the street…
