Final Countdown Progress Accelerates
At first, no one answered Xiao Zhongda's call because everyone was immersed in the joyful dinner party. This left Xiao Zhongda feeling extremely frustrated. It slammed the landline down and muttered to itself in the storage room, "What kind of humans are these! Do they think nothing is happening?! Ugh, it's driving me crazy. I need to find them myself."
Although it knew that the sun outside was blazing, as a bat, Xiao Zhongda's nature made it reluctant to go out during the day. Nevertheless, it opened the door and flew toward the center of Song Family Courtyard under the bright sunlight.
Meanwhile, everyone at the dinner table had already dispersed. Jiao An had finally agreed to Qin Weishan's request for solitude, and the two walked into the garden to enjoy their own sweet time together. Xu Yicheng lit a cigarette for Liang Muqi while Wen Yue City accompanied them as they strolled quietly on the grassy area, listening to Xu Yicheng and Liang Muqi discuss whether to continue their research on String Energy. Miao Chengmin and Ming Juan sat on rocking chairs by the villa, with Miao Chengmin talking about how to arrange the Divine Domain Vanguard while Ming Juan leaned against his shoulder with a tender smile. Everyone began planning for the future, no longer worrying about battles.
"Well, I guess I'm just an extra wherever I go," Lu Sha pouted and turned to head back to her villa. Before reaching her residence, she noticed something dark on a bench at a corner of the path. Driven by curiosity, Lu Sha approached and quickly ran forward upon realizing what it was. "Xiao Zhongda? What are you doing out here in broad daylight?"
Lu Sha poked at the completely exhausted Xiao Zhongda, which lay limp in her hands like a lifeless creature. Xiao Zhongda barely opened its eyes but quickly shut them again against the sunlight. In this struggle, its eyes alternated between opening and closing. "I can't take it anymore! I can't find you guys; this daylight is unbearable! Let me rest for a moment—I'm dizzy all over, my body aches, and my wings are cramping..."
"Lu Sha, where are you alone?" An Xiaotian and Liu Xuan happened to pass by and approached with smiles.
"Xiao Zhongda doesn't know what got into it; it came out during the day," Lu Sha explained as she cradled the barely conscious Xiao Zhongda.
"What do you mean by 'what got into me'? You all have no idea how serious this is! Otherwise, I wouldn't be out here under the sun looking for you! Cough cough..." Xiao Zhongda supported itself with its claws on Lu Sha's hands, tapping insistently as its face—though black—looked slightly flushed. "The Quantum String Engine Locator you brought back is fake! It's 3D printed! I really don't know what you all did on your mission that such tricks could fool you! And you guys seem to have set up a vacation plan for yourselves—Jiao An and Qin Weishan are probably getting engaged or something!"
"Wait!" Seeing Xiao Zhongda getting worked up and unable to stop talking, An Xiaotian quickly interrupted it and bent down to ask, "Could you say that again?"
"I've said so much already; do you want me to repeat myself? Fine! I'll tell you again: The Quantum String Engine Locator brought back by Second Team is fake! Fake!"
The three present were stunned into silence as An Xiaotian straightened up, exchanging wide-eyed glances with Liu Xuan.
"Did you know about this?" Liu Xuan asked Lu Sha, his left eye now glowing with a moonlight hue.
"I... I had no idea." Lu Sha thought they were going to blame her. "Our Second Team leader is Sister Jiao An. At that time, internal Human suggested we trade for their survival using the Quantum String Engine Locator. We got it, but Sister Jiao An still summoned Satellite Beam to destroy the bunker, so... we didn't expect this."
"This is bad." Nars covered his face. "Internal Human excels at schemes; you can't trust their words."
"Why would it be fake?" An Xiaotian asked incredulously.
"High-fidelity 3D printing technology!" Xiao Zhongda exclaimed. "They tricked you with fakes; the real Quantum String Engine Locator must have been relocated elsewhere on Earth! Do you understand?! As long as three Quantum String Engine Locators can be activated simultaneously in an equilateral triangle pattern, they can still provide precise transit coordinates for internal Human's starship!"
U City
After the zombie war ended, this city began its reconstruction plan. The flow of people and continuous ground rebuilding projects provided stalkers with opportunities to hide themselves. She moved through various refugee settlements disguised as a human, using her counterfeit currency to trade for living supplies.
"How much are these apples?"
"Six dollars thirty cents each."
An elderly woman carefully selected apples for the stalker disguised as a human and packed three for her. The stalker paid with counterfeit money and pulled up her mask as she walked back to her rented room.
The entire neighborhood was made up of tents built by refugees after the zombie war, engaging in small businesses. Choosing to live in such an environment as the last "familiar face" was not without reason; her greatest advantage was that The Celestial Warriors Alliance could no longer find her. Her mission was complete; now she had only to adapt slowly and live through the days before the emperor's arrival.
The small apartment on the third floor measured eighty square meters and came with a television, which was considered relatively good in this refugee gathering place. As she climbed the stairs, Stalker happened to encounter a neighbor descending with his child.
"Hello, big sister," the child waved at her. Stalker, wearing a mask, nodded slightly and continued up the stairs.
"Daddy, that sister is so strange! I've never seen her without her mask," the child remarked.
"Maybe she's just naturally aloof. People have changed since the war..."
Listening to their conversation, Stalker opened her door. Once it closed behind her, the noise from the outside—motorcycle horns and vendors shouting—diminished significantly. She removed her mask and prepared to turn on the light to cook.
"Put down your things and don't move."
A calm female voice echoed from the living room, startling Stalker. She immediately dropped the groceries she had bought and took a defensive stance, ready for confrontation.
In the darkness, golden patterns stood out vividly, casting a reddish-golden hue on the television screen that mingled with the sunset outside, resembling stirred egg yolk. Taokalanphiel stepped forward and halted in the living room, gazing at Stalker.
"Who are you?" Stalker guessed that she was another new member of The Celestial Warriors Alliance.
"I am Taokalanphiel, captain of the Divine Domain Support Team, code name Light Shuttle," she replied. "You deceived everyone into believing they ended the war when in fact all three Quantum String Engine Locators are still intact, aren't they?"
"So you're here to force me to reveal their whereabouts?" Stalker drew her Light Arc Dagger.
"Put down your knife; you can't defeat me," Light Shuttle advanced. "If you cooperate with us, we in the Divine Realm will handle matters accordingly—"
Suddenly, a flash of cold light! An eight-centimeter throwing knife shot straight from Stalker's shoulder-mounted launcher toward Light Shuttle's face! Light Shuttle instantly transformed into a four-dimensional form; the knife passed through her illusion and shattered the glass behind her. In an instant—so quick it was beyond description—she appeared before Stalker and sent her crashing against the iron gate of her rental unit!
The gate buckled under Stalker's weight, and she felt a wave of nausea wash over her abdomen from the impact. In that brief exchange, she realized just how much faster Light Shuttle was compared to her. As Light Shuttle prepared to grab her, Stalker melded into the shadows and darted toward the rooftop.
Light Shuttle lost sight of her target; she didn't know that her opponent could merge into shadows. "Squad, move out and seal off this area," Light Shuttle ordered through the communicator provided by Divine Realm's dimensional contact center.
As soon as she finished speaking, Stalker had already slipped through shadows to appear at the rooftop's edge behind Light Shuttle. Reacting quickly, Light Shuttle turned around just in time to catch a blade with her hand; it pierced through her palm, causing sudden agony that made her double over.
Light Shuttle had inadvertently injured herself; Stalker seized the opportunity to leap down and was concealed by an awning hanging over a vegetable stall below. Amidst gasps of surprise, the awning tore as she crashed down onto a small stall filled with vegetables. The vendor approached to inquire what had happened when Stalker stood up, pushed past onlookers, and sprinted toward the narrow end of the street.
However, she hadn't run far when seven people from within the crowd began running alongside her. They weren't there to race; they were members of the Divine Domain Support Team. One individual leaped high enough to land level with the top floor of a nearby building before dropping down in front of her and blocking her path.
Stalker didn't want to be delayed; she charged forward with a flying knee strike that knocked him to the ground before slipping back into shadows to continue fleeing. Realizing their opponent could merge into shadows, pursuing Support Team members activated small drones while running. The drones launched from their hands and followed Stalker closely before flashing in front of her in midair, creating an area of obscured light that enveloped her.
The entire area plunged into absolute darkness—there was no escape! Stalker lost her ability to create shadows and had no choice but to revert to her original form. A flash of gold illuminated as Light Shuttle caught up with her and knocked her down with a punch.
"Can you cooperate now?" Light Shuttle transformed back into three-dimensional form as other team members surrounded Stalker.
"Heh, what good does capturing me do?" Stalker scoffed while sitting on the ground. A light curtain ejected from her arm's equipment revealing a button. "If I press this button, the Quantum String Engine Locator will activate immediately; the other two Quantum String Engine Locators will follow suit! Once activated and launched into outer space, none of you can stop it!"
Light Shuttle seized Stalker's hand before she could press it and shouted to other team members: "Cut off her arm!"
At that moment, the drone's battery ran out, and the area that blocked the light vanished in an instant. Everyone's shadows reappeared under the sun. As a team member raised their knife, the Stalker melded into the shadows, leaving a Grenade on the ground.
"Grenade!" The team members exclaimed in shock, quickly retreating. However, Light Shuttle grabbed the Grenade and hurled it into the air with all their might. The Grenade exploded mid-air, creating a cloud of black smoke. By the time everyone regained their composure, the Stalker had already vanished without a trace.
"Damn it!" Taokalanphiel stomped their foot in frustration and sent a message to Divine Realm. "Quickly notify Miao Chengmin! The three Quantum String Engine Locators are still intact and should be activated! The Chaos Crystals are all within him; once he descends, Ban Sa's primary target will be him!"
