After finishing lunch, Jiang Xi returned to her own Jinlan Courtyard with Han Yue and Han Shuang. As they passed through the corridor, a cold, angry voice rang out, "A Maan, is this the courtyard you cleaned? With your sneaky attitude, the young lady will not spare you when she returns."
The maid A Maan, who was being reprimanded, explained, "Sister A Jin, I just cleaned it thoroughly."
A Jin raised her hand and slapped her across the face, the sound echoing in the air. "Still trying to argue? You have quite the nerve. Why don't you go pick up that comb?"
A Maan's face immediately bore the imprint of five fingers, but she dared not say anything. With tears in her eyes, she turned to pick up the comb.
A Jin continued relentlessly, "Look at you acting all wronged as if I’ve mistreated you. Who are you crying for? You have no sense of decorum at all."
At that moment, Leyin called out loudly, "The young lady has returned; hurry up and welcome her!"
As soon as the words were spoken, the maids in the courtyard turned their heads. A Jin smiled and exclaimed, "Miss, you're back!"
A Maan crouched down to pick up the Phoenix Comb that should not have been in Willow Courtyard, not daring to make a sound.
Jiang Xi stepped past A Jin and helped A Maan up. Noticing the swelling on her face, she asked with concern, "What happened to your face?"
A Maan lowered her head even further, trembling slightly as she replied, "It's my fault; I'm clumsy."
A Jin turned around with a smile and said, "Miss, A Maan is just a bit clumsy. I'll send her to the kitchen to help out later; please don’t hold it against her."
Jiang Xi glanced coldly at A Jin and replied indifferently, "Who said I wanted to hold it against her? When did Jinlan Courtyard become your place to assign tasks?"
Jiang Xi's sudden change in demeanor left A Jin stunned. She knelt down anxiously, her body trembling slightly. "Miss, did I do something wrong? Please don't be angry; I will definitely change."
Jiang Xi shot her a cold look. "You have many faults." Without waiting for A Jin to respond, her gaze returned to A Maan.
"A Maan, remember this: there is only one master in Jinlan Courtyard—me. No one else has the right to boss you around. If you continue to cower and let others bully you, I will sell you off."
A Maan nodded in fear. Leyin approached and gently patted A Maan's shoulder, reassuring her, "Don't worry; the young lady is kind and won't sell you off. But from now on, you need to learn to be tougher. People tend to bully those who are weak and submissive; the more you hesitate to resist, the more they will take advantage of you."
A Maan glanced nervously at Han Yue, realizing she was being defended. She couldn't help but look again at A Jin still kneeling on the ground and pressed her lips together in silence.
A Jin was the maid sent to Jiang Xi by Huo Xingwen, and she always considered herself the top servant in Jinlan Courtyard, looking down on others.
The other maids were aware that their young mistress had feelings for Huo Xingwen, so they tolerated A Jin's behavior, which only made her increasingly arrogant and overbearing.
However, A Jin was quite skilled at putting on a facade; every time she was in front of Jiang Xi, she acted lively, sweet-tongued, and obedient, which endeared her to Jiang Xi.
But now, Jiang Xi had come to her senses. She looked down at A Jin and said, "In the past, I was polite to you out of respect for Huo Xingwen, but that doesn’t mean you can act like a tyrant here. After kneeling for two hours, you will return to Huo Residence and never show your face in front of me again."
A Jin stared at Jiang Xi in disbelief. "Miss, I was sent here by Young Master Huo."
Jiang Xi coldly replied, "That's why I'm sending you back. What's wrong with that? I no longer need you here."
With that, Jiang Xi turned and walked into the house.
A Maan silently glanced at A Jin before also turning to follow Jiang Xi inside.
A Jin often relied on her connection to Huo Xingwen to bully the other maids around Jiang Xi, leaving them too afraid to speak up. Seeing A Jin kneeling there now brought A Maan great satisfaction; she secretly scoffed—serves her right—and followed into the room.
Juxiang and Haitang attentively served Jiang Xi while cautiously probing, "I heard that Miss has broken off her engagement with Huo Xingwen."
Jiang Xi responded with a casual "Hmm," indicating she was listening.
Juxiang couldn't hide her excitement. "It's true! That's wonderful! Huo Xingwen is utterly unreliable; how could he ever make you happy? You should have done this long ago."
Haitang quickly coughed to remind Juxiang not to get carried away.
Juxiang immediately panicked, but Jiang Xi spoke lightly, "Do you also think Huo Xingwen is unreliable? It seems I truly was blind before."
Juxiang hurriedly replied, "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder; it’s not your fault, Miss."
Haitang gently massaged Jiang Xi's calves and cautiously asked, "What made you suddenly fall out with Huo Xingwen?"
Jiang Xi responded calmly, "After being blind for four years, there has to be a moment of awakening. I can't be a blind fool my whole life; otherwise, I'll just end up being foolish on my own."
Juxiang gently comforted her, "Miss, please don't speak so harshly about yourself."
Haitang, still somewhat doubtful, cautiously asked, "Are you sure you want to sever ties with Young Master Huo? What if this is just a temporary quarrel or some misunderstanding?"
Jiang Xi closed her eyes, and images flooded her mind: arrows raining down, flames engulfing the surroundings, corpses scattered everywhere, and the scene of strong arms holding her tightly until death.
"If this is a misunderstanding, then it’s one that will likely never be resolved in this lifetime."
Jiang Xi smiled softly. "In any case, my path with Huo Xingwen has come to an end. If he dares to come looking for me again, he shouldn't blame me for being ruthless and forgetting the past."
Both Juxiang and Haitang sighed in relief. It seemed the young lady was determined to cut ties with Huo Xingwen, which was wonderful news. That hypocritical man who spoke sweetly but had a treacherous heart was not worthy of her affection; she deserved someone much better.
Suddenly, Jiang Xi turned and called out, "Han Shuang, when does your lord usually return home?"
Han Shuang stood by the door and slightly bowed as she replied, "Miss, the lord heard you were going out with the madam at noon and returned to the residence early to wait for you."
Jiang Xi immediately sat up, leaning forward with a hint of surprise in her eyes. "When did this happen?"
Han Shuang answered, "It was when you went out shopping with the madam."
