"Are you still there?"
I didn't know if Long Qi was still around. He had been sent to the villa to protect me, or perhaps to protect the child that Song Moting had never intended to eliminate. Now that I had been brought back to the Song Family and Yingying was gone, I wasn't sure if a bodyguard would still be following me.
Fortunately, my phone suddenly vibrated, and I saw that familiar number. The room was dark, with no lights on, and Long Qi's whereabouts were a mystery. At that moment, I didn't want to interact with anyone; I just lay there in a daze and sent him a voice message.
"Long Qi, my child is gone."
His voice sounded even more hoarse than mine as he replied, "It's my fault."
"How can you blame yourself for this?"
He fell silent, offering no response.
In the stillness, I heard faint footsteps approaching. I sensed Long Qi quietly entering the room. In the darkness, I couldn't see much, but as he drew closer, I caught a strong smell of blood on him; he must still be wearing the same clothes from yesterday.
He stopped by the bedside and handed me an exquisitely packaged box. Inside was a high-tech baby monitor, displaying an animated Little Tiger running across the screen. The setup interface was complicated, but he had only adjusted two basic functions.
But it didn't matter; it would never be used again.
I curled up and stared at the ceiling, trying hard to keep my eyes wide open. Tears finally overflowed, rolling down my cheeks in large drops.
Choking back sobs, I repeated, "Long Qi, my child is gone."
A rusty scent enveloped me as he embraced me. This was the first time he had crossed that boundary. His eyes were hotter than the flame tattoo on his wrist, the only light in this pitch-black night.
His tone was surprisingly gentle. "It's all over now; I will always be here with you."
As our skin touched, I felt his suit was somewhat damp. He released me and stepped back a few paces, helplessly saying, "You, born with a silver spoon in your mouth..."
"Who knew how damp the terrace would be at night? With this weather, it looks like it might rain tomorrow."
"Really? Then remember to bring a jacket."
He nodded and replied affirmatively.
After everything that happened, I was physically and mentally exhausted. I told others I was unwell and locked myself in the Song Family villa, not stepping outside.
In the first few days, I tossed and turned, unable to sleep.
I didn't know how Long Qi managed his shifts, but every time I called for him, he responded immediately. He always maintained a state of being on call.
"My mother, once a rising star in the jewelry industry, has a very poor relationship with the current vice president of Song Group. One day, that Old Witch went crazy and wanted to marry me off to a coal boss from a remote mountain area."
"Miss..."
Long Qi seemed to sense what I was about to say and wanted to speak up to stop me, but he hesitated because of his position.
I gently shook my head, signaling him not to worry.
I wanted to say something. I wanted to share it with you, my Bodyguard.
"That Old Witch implied that a woman like me, who tarnishes the Song Family's reputation, could still create value for the company—what a blessing that would be."
"She made too much sense, so that night, I plotted to climb into her Precious Son's bed. Since they said I was dirty, I decided to completely fall from grace for them to see."
"That old woman must have been baffled as to why it ended up with Song Moting putting a stop to the marriage."
I wasn't sure if Long Qi could grasp the deeper meaning behind my words.
