Liu Family.
The door, painted in a deep black lacquer, was flanked by two large red lanterns hanging high above. In front of the courtyard stood two marble lions, majestically guarding the entrance.
Liu Jingjing turned around to face Fang Lansheng. Bathed in the warm glow of the lanterns, she slowly removed the windbreaker wrapped around her and extended it towards Fang Lansheng, her head slightly bowed.
"It’s time... to return this to you."
The man smiled, the corners of his mouth lifting gently as he took the windbreaker and draped it back over Liu Jingjing’s shoulders with a tender touch.
"Come inside. Remember to wear a qipao next time we meet."
As his deep, clear eyes lingered on her face, Liu Jingjing quickly averted her gaze, a hint of panic flashing in her eyes. Waves of youthful tenderness rippled through her heart. Lowering her eyes, she softly replied, "I’ll go in first!"
The night was as dark as ink, and the moon hung like a hook in the sky.
After bidding her parents goodnight, Liu Jingjing entered the room with her maid. She gently pushed open the large red wooden door, and the dim candlelight illuminated a familiar face, causing the maid to scream in fright. However, Liu Jingjing's expression remained calm; she merely paused for a moment in surprise.
She focused and clearly saw the face before her, then let out a long sigh of relief, leaning in closely with a smile on her face.
"Sister, why did you come back before me?"
"I was about to ask you why you returned so late. After you left, I heard from the people at Pineapple Garden that you almost got hurt. Jingjing, are you okay?"
"Sister, I'm fine. Don't worry about me; I'll be more careful in the future." Liu Jingjing said playfully as she wrapped her arms around Liu Momo's shoulders and buried her head against her.
Liu Momo was at a loss for how to deal with her and could only poke Liu Jingjing's nose lightly, smiling helplessly.
"Then you should rest early. Just make sure not to cause any trouble for Father; the ceramic business at home has taken another hit, and he's quite upset about it."
Liu Momo furrowed her brows. Dressed in a bright red qipao, her dark hair simply styled into a bun, and wearing a pair of beautiful white high heels, she walked with an alluring grace that was captivating.
Liu Jingjing watched the enchanting woman walk away, a hint of reluctance in her eyes.
She lit a candle and gently waved her hand, sending the maid away. Alone, she sat in front of the lamp, flipping through her Chinese literature textbook with little interest, her fingers casually turning the pages.
As the night wind rustled outside, a chill seeped through the window. Liu Jingjing couldn't help but rise, slowly walking toward the window to close it.
Just as her body neared the window, something flew past her face. Liu Jingjing gasped softly, clutching her chest and leaning back slightly.
In the dim candlelight, Liu Jingjing's mouth fell open again as she saw a familiar dart lying quietly on the ground.
At its tip was a piece of paper folded into a square. She cautiously crouched down, her fingers trembling slightly as she picked it up and slowly unfolded it.
"Do not trust Fang Lansheng; he is a spy sent by the Japanese army."
Who did this? Is someone following her?
Lost in thought, she heard a rustling sound outside the door. She set the note down and stood up to investigate, her steps slow yet tinged with tension.
Outside, the cold moonlight still lingered, and the Liu family courtyard was dark, enveloped in silence, with only the sound of the wind howling in her ears.
Returning to her room, the candlelight on the desk flickered up and down. Unbeknownst to her, a tall shadow quietly fell into Liu Jingjing's line of sight. She covered her mouth and slid down against the door, her eyes filled with endless fear, her body trembling slightly.
"Jingjing, it's me, Fang Lansheng."
Her heart began to race violently, but upon hearing that familiar voice, Liu Jingjing's anxious heart finally calmed. She slowly lowered her hand from her mouth.
She closed her eyes and let out a long breath. "How did you get in? This is my home..."
"Come with me to Pineapple Garden!" Before she could finish, Fang Lansheng pulled her through the crack of the door with swift movements.
In the night, his gaze was like the bright moonlight, inching its way into Liu Jingjing's eyes. He turned around and gently ruffled her disheveled hair, saying, "Don't make a sound. Let's go check the side hall."
Moonlight spilled over the crimson wooden door as Fang Lansheng poked a hole in the paper window with his finger, revealing the scene inside with focused eyes.
"He finally showed up, you know? Without this method, I wouldn't have been able to draw him out. The moment I saw him at the girls' school that day, I couldn't forget him. So, only by eliminating you can I get closer to him. I'll find someone to burn some money for me soon; just rest easy on your journey."
In the side room, a woman's voice floated out, singing in a tone reminiscent of a sorrowful actress.
Though she was far away and her words were unclear, her fleeting silhouette resembled someone familiar.
Fang Lansheng withdrew his gaze and turned back with a mischievous grin, looking at Liu Jingjing's curious expression. He pointed inside and whispered in her ear, "There's a female ghost resurrecting in there; we should run!"
"Hey, you called me out just to see a ghost?"
"Ah? Maybe for some other reasons too!" Fang Lansheng shrugged nonchalantly, but his wise and shrewd eyes remained fixed on the Pineapple Garden.
Then, a delicate woman stepped out of the car, dressed in a bright red qipao with her hair elegantly styled in an updo. A pure white gardenia flower was tucked behind her ear, exuding both allure and grace.
Liu Jingjing was instantly mesmerized. She watched as Fang Lansheng's arm wrapped around the woman's waist, his face adorned with an uncommon smile—gentlemanly and elegant. A wave of disappointment washed over her heart.
Liu Jingjing's heart grew cold once more.
In his eyes, she was ultimately just an innocent student.
Watching Fang Lansheng walk into the Pineapple Garden with that woman, his voice was soft: "Momo, I heard the music tonight is quite good. I'll reserve two seats; make sure to dress beautifully this evening."
Even without makeup, her face was still captivating enough to steal one's breath away.
Upon hearing Fang Lansheng's words, Liu Momo's face lit up with ecstatic joy. She smiled and nodded, and Fang Lansheng wrapped his arm around her slender waist.
In this chaotic world, Liu Jingjing remained beneath the stage, feeling thin and small, her gaze vacant and lost.
