After wandering around Taihua Palace for what felt like an eternity, I finally realized with frustration that I couldn’t find my way back. As my gaze drifted, I collided head-on with a man approaching me.
Startled, I instinctively stepped back, and when I focused on him, I was taken aback. The man wore a light yellow brocade robe, his hair tied up with a jade crown. He stood tall and had a handsome face.
He was so handsome! His looks could easily outshine any popular male singer or actor; if he were in modern times, he would bring immense profit to our entertainment industry!
My eyes sparkled with admiration.
“You are the one who killed the Xiongnu King, Zhi Su? What happened?”
It was only when he spoke that I snapped back to reality, revealing a rather comical expression as my face flushed slightly.
“I can’t find my way back to Qixiang Garden.”
“I’ll take you there,” he offered.
“ Prince He, the Empress Dowager is still waiting for you!” a eunuch behind him interjected.
“It’s not far; I’ll be back soon.”
So he was Prince He, He Zheyang! When I first entered the palace, Xiao Luo had mentioned him. He was known for his intelligence and martial prowess but held a lower status among t Prince He s because he was born to a commoner woman favored by the late emperor.
By the time he escorted me back to Qixiang Garden, we had walked for quite some time, and my heart continued to race as I unconsciously tugged at the hem of my clothes.
It turned out that even someone who prided herself on being composed could turn into a lovesick fool in front of a handsome man.
After several days of snowfall, once it lightened up, I heard that the plum blossoms in the imperial garden were blooming spectacularly. So, I threw on a red cloak and rushed out to admire the flowers.
Who brought me to this isolated era with no internet?
Every day, aside from looking at those complicated traditional characters in the ancient books that I barely understand—my eyes start to hurt after a while—the only way to pass the time is to admire the flowers.
I never expected to run into He Zheyang. He was standing in Plum Blossom Sea, staring blankly at the plum blossoms, with some snowflakes occasionally falling on him. He would gently brush them off with an elegant and leisurely motion.
" Prince He, why bother with this futile task? If you brush them off now, more will fall shortly after."
I couldn't help but say, "It would be much prettier with the branches covered in snow! Just look over there!" I pointed to a nearby untouched area, my arm tracing an arc through the air.
Seeing He Zheyang obediently glance in the direction I pointed, I suddenly felt embarrassed. Nevertheless, I calmly said to him, "Look how beautifully those plum blossoms are blooming! Are you also here to enjoy the plums, Prince He?"
He Zheyang nodded. "Let the cold snow awaken my mind."
"Oh! Then you continue to awaken. I won't disturb you any longer." I turned to walk back, feeling a strange sensation in my chest that made me hesitant to be alone with him. Just looking at him made me inexplicably nervous, and my steps quickened.
After taking a few strides, I couldn't resist turning back and saying, "It's a bit chilly; don't stay out too long, Prince He!"
With that, I hurried away, my figure quickly disappearing at the end of the path.
What I didn't see was that Prince He watched my departing silhouette until it vanished from sight, then a smile crept onto his lips, barely noticeable.
A few days later, when the snow had melted, the Emperor led a group of people out for a hunting expedition, leaving the vast palace feeling much emptier.
Bored in the palace after reading for a while, I decided to join Xiao Luo in the Imperial Garden. As soon as we arrived at the garden, I heard Yun Yao's voice: "Who put this flower pot here? Don't they know it's blocking my way?"
At that moment, she happened to see me and called out, "Miss Zhi Su, could you help me move this flower pot that's blocking the way?"
"This kind of heavy work is not something a lady should do. Let me handle it," Xiao Luo said as she stepped forward to lend a hand. However, Yun Yao's expression darkened, and she stepped on Xiao Luo's hand, her eyes filled with arrogance. "Lady? What title has the Emperor conferred upon her?"
Seeing the tears welling up in Xiao Luo's eyes, I felt a pang of sympathy and said, "Let her go; I'll move it right away." Just then, with a loud crash, the flower pot fell to the ground and shattered into pieces.
Yun Yao swiftly stepped forward and slapped me across the face, her arm swinging quickly as her palm landed heavily on my cheek. "Are you blind? How dare you break something in the palace!"
The slap made my head spin; I had never been hit before in my life. Anger surged within me as I glared at her. "Wasn't it your fault?"
Yun Yao seemed taken aback by my retort and shouted angrily, "How dare you! You make mistakes and still refuse to repent!" With that, she pushed me, causing me to stumble backward into the cold pond behind me. My body arched through the air before splashing into the water.
"I'll see if you remember this lesson in the future!" Yun Yao shot me a glare as she flicked her sleeves and walked away.
Xiao Luo was terrified and pale with fear; only after Yun Yao had gone far did she dare to call for someone to help me out. Her face was filled with anxiety, her voice trembling with tears.
The weather was cold, and I was already shivering uncontrollably. In my daze, I saw He Zheyang rushing towards me, his steps hurried as he took off his robe and draped it over my shoulders gently.
Noticing how I was trembling, he placed his hands over mine, wrapping his warm palms around my icy fingers, his eyes filled with concern. It felt as though I had been tucked into a warm blanket, and soon I drifted off into a deep sleep.
When I woke up, I found myself staring into He Zheyang's weary face. "You've been here all along..."
