A breath of air brushed past her ear, and Li Niannian trembled, dropping a shower of dry leaves around her. Her body shook like a leaf in the wind.
"Um, no, wait, Manager... why are you... I don't understand what you mean..." Her voice quivered with confusion and uncertainty.
He fixed her with a stern look. "Am I not being clear enough?" There was a hint of dissatisfaction in his gaze.
"Um, are you just being impulsive?" she asked cautiously, worry flickering in her eyes.
Xu Yuandao nearly lost his temper at this foolish woman; could she be any more clueless?
Just days ago, he had run into Li Niannian's mother, her words still echoing in his mind.
"Yuan Dao, there's nothing much for me to say. You know what kind of daughter you have at home. Nian Nian is both foolish and clumsy, and she's so slow when it comes to relationships. I've always worried she would end up with the wrong person."
"I don't mean to pressure you; after all, feelings can't be forced. A boy as outstanding as you really deserves better than my Nian Nian."
"Your parents are very eager for our families to become in-laws. Honestly, both Nian Nian's father and I feel quite embarrassed to refuse. If you're feeling troubled by this, it's alright; just let me know. I know some nice girls I could introduce you to..."
Having such a worrisome daughter indeed caused her parents a great deal of heartache. If she were to marry a bad husband in the future, the Li couple would likely never find peace in their old age, let alone enjoy any comfort.
Li Niannian was such a muddled and silly girl; even after getting hurt, she would still think of others first. It wasn't hard to imagine someone like her being sold off and still helping the traffickers count their money.
Thus, he came up with an idea: to trap her and make her his own.
"Am I not good enough for you?" he asked coldly, his eyes glinting with a hint of frost as he stared directly at Li Niannian.
"Good enough? Good enough!" Li Niannian replied like a startled animal, mechanically responding while trembling slightly and avoiding his gaze.
"Oh? Is that so dismissive?"
Knowing full well she didn't mean "no," he continued to tease her, the corners of his mouth lifting in a smirk.
It's unfair, sir!
That's not what I meant! I meant that Manager, you are definitely good enough! A Manager is worth at least a hundred of me—no, a thousand or even ten thousand! Li Niannian's face flushed crimson as she waved her hands frantically in explanation.
"Is it really that cheap?" Xu Yuandao chuckled, his bright smile leaving Li Niannian momentarily stunned.
Lately, she had been feeling strange. Why did her heart race inexplicably whenever she saw Xu Yuandao? Could it be...
Could it be that she was sick?!
She truly felt unwell.
Li Niannian thought she was in deep trouble, especially when she saw Xu Yuandao getting closer to other female employees. It made her feel like an ant on a hot pan, restless and anxious.
She squirmed in her seat, furrowing her brows, her eyes filled with worry.
"How could this happen—"
Li Niannian leaned over her desk, frustratedly tugging at her hair, making it a messy tangle.
Wasn't she used to this kind of situation before?
She couldn't understand why she was so concerned about the Manager being surrounded by flowers. Whenever she saw him smile, her heart would soar out of the atmosphere, never to return.
"What's wrong with you?"
She immediately replied, "It's just that the Manager..."
Wait a minute, that magnetic voice sounded familiar, unlike anyone else... Li Niannian slowly lifted her gaze and found herself staring into Xu Yuandao's deep, unfathomable eyes.
Oh no! A shock ran through her as her body froze instantly.
Especially with the teasing glint in Xu Yuandao's eyes, her cheeks flushed with anger, resembling a ripe apple.
"What about me?" he kindly reminded her, still wearing that mischievous grin.
"Nothing!" Li Niannian suddenly stood up. In her haste, her chair tipped backward with a loud crash.
Clutching her folder tightly, she stood upright and declared, "Manager, I’m going to deliver these documents to the procurement department!" Then, like a startled rabbit, she dashed away in a hurry.
"Running so fast, aren't you afraid of falling?"
Xu Yuandao's prediction was undeniably accurate, as a wail immediately followed.
Recently, the distracted Li Niannian had been making frequent mistakes at work and had faced plenty of scolding from Xu Yuandao. Normally resilient under pressure, she found herself unable to hold back tears, her eyes reddening as they brimmed with unshed sorrow.
"Steel!"
"I really don't understand why the company hired someone like you!" Xu Yuandao frowned, his face contorted with anger as he shouted.
"But I've been trying my best..." she murmured defensively, her voice tinged with a hint of grievance, her head bowed like a child caught in wrongdoing.
"Is this the extent of your effort? I don't need excuses; show me your results." His tone was icy, deeply wounding Li Niannian and providing her with a reason to storm out.
"Hey, Nian Nian!" She fled too quickly for him to call her back.
Damn manager! That awful manager! Is it so satisfying to belittle others?
With tears of frustration glistening in her eyes, Li Niannian ran straight into Manager Ma from the HR department, knocking the documents out of her hands.
Manager Ma was notorious for her ruthless demeanor, and at that moment, she was already in a foul mood, ignited further by Li Niannian's clumsiness.
