Su Yao's headache felt as if her head might split open. She opened her eyes and found herself lying in an unfamiliar room. She tried to recall what had happened, but her memories seemed to have been stripped away, leaving only fragmented pieces.
"You’re awake," a gentle voice said. It was Charlie, Mia's adoptive father.
Su Yao sat up, rubbing her temples, her voice laced with confusion. "Where am I? What happened?"
Charlie sat at the edge of the bed, looking at her with concern. "Mia, you’re in the infirmary at Fox High School. You suddenly fainted, and the doctor said you might be exhausted."
Su Yao glanced around; everything felt so foreign, and a wave of inexplicable panic surged within her. "I... I need to go home."
Charlie nodded and helped her sit up. "Of course, we’ll go home."
Su Yao understood that the home they referred to was not the same as the one in her heart.
She realized that she had been hit by a car on her way to work that morning and somehow ended up here—she might have crossed over.
From the East to the West.
Back at home, Su Yao tried to adapt to this new identity and environment. She opened Mia's diary, a record of a sixteen-year-old girl's thoughts, hoping to find some clues within its pages.
The diary detailed Mia's curiosity about magic and her yearning for power, along with mentions of a boy named Edward.
"Hey, how are you feeling?" Renee, her adoptive mother, entered the room holding a cup of hot tea.
Su Yao took the cup, forcing a smile. "I’m okay, just… I feel like I’ve forgotten so much."
Renee sat beside her, softly reassuring her. "It’s alright, dear. We’ll help you remember."
Su Yao nodded, her gaze falling on the diary again. Gathering her courage, she asked, "Renee, do you know Edward? Is he my friend?"
Renee's expression grew complicated. "Edward Cullen? He’s quite popular at school, but he… he’s a bit mysterious."
A strong impulse surged within Su Yao; she wanted to meet this Edward.
The next day, Su Yao walked into Fox High School, her eyes scanning the crowd for Edward's figure. When she finally spotted him, her heart raced.
"Hi, Edward," Su Yao mustered the courage to greet him.
Edward turned around, a hint of surprise in his eyes. "Hi, Mia. You look... a bit different today."
Su Yao nervously smiled. "I... I fainted yesterday and feel like I've forgotten a lot of things."
A flicker of concern crossed Edward's face. "Are you okay? Do you need my help?"
Su Yao shook her head. "No, I... I just wanted to know if we are friends."
Edward paused for a moment, then smiled gently. "We... can be."
A warm feeling surged within Su Yao; she knew that in this new world, she at least had one person to rely on.
As time passed, the relationship between Su Yao and Edward gradually developed. They began to encounter each other at school, talk in the library, and stroll through the playground.
Their conversations ranged from books to music, from art to science, from humanity to the supernatural.
"Do you believe in fate, Edward?" Su Yao suddenly asked during one of their walks.
Edward looked at her, a deep glimmer in his eyes. "Mia, I believe in choices. I believe we can choose our own destiny."
Su Yao fell silent for a moment before softly saying, "I don't know what my destiny is; I don't know where I belong."
Edward stopped walking and looked at her earnestly. "You belong here, Mia. You belong to the place you choose."
An inexplicable emotion welled up in Su Yao's heart; she knew Edward's words were sincere—he truly loved Mia.
After returning home, she flipped through her diary and discovered that when Mia was fifteen, she had wandered through a forest and met Edward. He had fallen in love with her and decided to attend high school just to be with her.
However, as their relationship grew closer, Su Yao found herself increasingly conflicted. She knew she was from the demon clan and possessed great power, but she was uncertain about how Edward would perceive her true identity.
In her diary, Mia expressed her vague feelings for Edward, and Su Yao sensed a hint of youthful emotion in that.
It seemed that Edward still did not know her true identity.
"Edward, if I told you I'm not an ordinary person, how would you see me?" Su Yao finally mustered the courage to ask.
There was no surprise in Edward's gaze, only understanding and acceptance. "Mia, no matter who you are or where you come from, you are my friend."
A warm current surged within Su Yao; she knew she could trust Edward and rely on him.
Yet, as their bond deepened, Su Yao also grew more fearful. She feared her secret would be discovered and that Edward might leave her because of it.
"Edward, if I did something that scared you, would you forgive me?" Su Yao's voice trembled slightly.
Edward held her hand tightly, his gaze firm yet gentle. "Mia, no matter what you do, I will be by your side."
In this world, Su Yao felt a sense of warmth as she slowly began to accept her identity as Mia.
She started to embrace this identity.
