In a tangled mix of emotions, Nian Leiyin welcomed Zuo Dao and his companions into the manor.
Thunder Sound Manor sprawled over a vast area, which was no surprise given its reputation as one of the great cities. Zuo Dao had expected the manor's hall to be grand and luxurious, but upon entering, he discovered something entirely different.
There were flowing streams beneath bridges, winding paths leading to secluded spots, and flowers blooming in abundance, all shaded by lush green trees. It resembled a park from another world. The architecture within the manor was intricate and far from simplistic. As Zuo Dao surveyed the entire estate, it became clear that the designer had aimed to align with the principles of Dao.
The proximity to Dao had little to do with cultivation level; rather, it was intricately tied to personal insight. The layout of the manor was refreshing and tidy, subtly revealing a feminine touch.
"I assume everything in this manor is designed by you, my friend?" Zuo Dao smiled.
Seeing Zuo Dao's smile made Nian Leiyin feel a bit uneasy.
"Young Master Zuo, how did you figure that out?" Despite her unease, she felt compelled to respond.
"The entire manor exudes an aura that is identical to yours," Zuo Dao replied without hesitation. Feng Yikong and the others struggled to suppress their laughter at his words. Only Young Master Zuo would dare discuss such matters in front of a woman, especially one at the Nascent Soul Great Perfection stage.
Nian Leiyin wanted to be angry, but recalling Zuo Dao's earlier smile softened her resolve. What kind of monster was he?
"You flatter me; it was merely a stroke of luck," Nian Leiyin said, feeling a bit pleased with herself. During one of her cultivation sessions, she had inadvertently aligned her aura with the Dao, allowing her to break through to the realm of Nascent Soul Great Perfection. Some insights remained with her, leading to the creation of this manor.
Aside from Zuo Dao, no other cultivator had been granted entry into the manor; even elders from first-rate sects or sect leaders lacked such qualifications.
This was also part of Nian Leiyin's intention. She barred other cultivators from entering for fear they might glean insights from the manor's arrangement. Allowing Zuo Dao in was her way of testing whether he truly lived up to his reputation.
Nian Leiyin was not particularly old; she was barely two hundred years old. A cultivator at Nascent Soul Great Perfection under a hundred years old would certainly cause quite a stir if discovered. Most existing Great Perfection cultivators were over a thousand years old—antiques by any measure. What did being a hundred years old signify? Perhaps it meant being at the Foundation Establishment Period or at best, a Golden Core True Person? Nascent Soul Great Perfection was beyond imagination.
Nian Leiyin had her pride and sharpness. From the moment she learned about Zuo Dao's existence, she harbored thoughts of competition. However, she never expected to be outmaneuvered right from their first meeting. She initially thought she could surpass him through their affinity for the Dao but soon realized that after Zuo Dao entered the manor, his presence influenced its entire atmosphere.
It was a complete defeat.
The defeat of this proud woman revealed an even graver issue: there was a strong possibility that he would become entangled with her.
From the initial question posed by Zuo Dao to her eventual listening, this transition occurred in a remarkably short time, leaving Second Ancestor and Seven Disciples in stunned silence. It was indeed the style of the young master.
Amidst the twists and turns, the group arrived before a building entirely constructed from stone, showing no signs of human embellishment, which made it appear even more natural. As they approached, Zuo Dao felt a tingling sensation throughout his body and exclaimed.
"Top-grade Thunderstone!?"
"You have a keen eye, young master. This is indeed top-grade Thunderstone, worth ten thousand spirit stones. The entire house is built from raw ore, which can greatly aid a Cultivator's training," Nian Leiyin said with a light laugh.
"If you like, you can stay here long-term."
What was going on? I never said I wanted to stay! This old woman can't possibly have taken a liking to me, right? Absolutely not! I'm only fifteen or sixteen; I can't let someone several hundred years old ruin my life!
"Ahem. Ahem. Long-term stay? Well, just right, Innocent needs some quiet time for reflection; he can stay for a while. Are you Innocent?"
Nian Leiyin furrowed her brows, about to speak when Zuo Dao interjected.
"Innocent, come out and greet Master Nian; hurry up and thank the Lord of the Mansion."
Innocent felt an overwhelming sense of indignation; he had seen shamelessness before but never to this extent. Even selling someone would involve some negotiation first, right? To be sold off like this without any conditions was absurd. He could only think to himself: what bad luck.
With no other choice, Innocent stepped forward and bowed respectfully to Nian Leiyin.
"I am Innocent, greetings to Senior Nian."
Before he could finish his sentence, Innocent and the others felt a wave of murderous intent rushing toward them. Zuo Dao had already slipped behind the group, stifling laughter.
Based on his past experiences with countless soap operas, Innocent was about to pay a heavy price for what he had just said. Although he couldn't fully grasp Nian Leiyin's character in such a short time, it didn't hinder his judgment.
A peak talent in cultivation and an innocent girl in emotions. Though she was over a hundred years old, her temperament remained as youthful as that of a girl.
Innocent was not even a hundred years old, and meeting him with the courtesy of a junior was already a major taboo in front of Nian Leiyin. Yet, he had done just that. Zuo Dao couldn't help but laugh inwardly, while Innocent cursed him silently.
The overwhelming killing intent did not intimidate him, for he knew that as long as Zuo Dao was present, the other party would not dare to act. However, he felt frustrated, wondering what he had done to offend this woman before him.
"What are you? A senior?" Just as he was lost in thought, Nian Leiyin's voice rang out.
"Am I really that old? Even you have to call me senior?" A sense of grievance enveloped Innocent, and the others quickly understood Nian Leiyin's meaning. They all took a few steps back, leaving the poor Innocent standing alone against Nian Leiyin.
"Innocent, you really should know better. Master Nian is in full bloom; how can you call her senior? You should at least refer to her as a fairy," Zuo Dao chimed in, always ready to add fuel to the fire.
"This..." Innocent felt a deep resentment. How had he ended up with such a master?
"I'm sorry. I sensed that the Lord of the Mansion possessed immense cultivation but didn't expect him to be so young, which led to my rudeness towards the fair lady. Please forgive me, fairy." What is talent? Just look at Innocent's words; in one sentence, he used three different titles—praise upon praise—that made Zuo Dao marvel at how well this child had learned during his time at the Listening to the Water Pavilion!
Innocent was already quite handsome, and with his elegant demeanor and articulate speech, he found it hard to provoke any anger from Nian Leiyin. The sudden surge of killing intent was merely instinctive.
"What kind of people are Zuo Dao's subordinates? This one alone could make most women feel ashamed." Initially thinking that this group was merely mediocre besides the Second Ancestor, Innocent's appearance completely changed her perspective. "Monsters! A whole bunch of monsters! A big monster leading a pack of monsters!" Though she didn't want to admit it, after scrutinizing them one by one, she realized there wasn't a single weakling among them, and their youth was strikingly apparent.
A sense of helplessness surged within Nian Leiyin.
