But things did not unfold as the Mad Dog had anticipated. The Black-Horned Bear seemed to be enraged by Xunuo's Against the Wind Boat, brazenly soaring overhead with fury. It chose to attack the Mad Dog's Giant Flying Vessel Artifact first.
The Black-Horned Bear's golden horn flashed with light, unleashing several golden blades that struck the Giant Flying Vessel Artifact simultaneously. The Mad Dog's Flying Vessel held out for only two breaths before it exploded with a loud bang, showering blood and severed limbs. At that moment, five small Flying Artifacts darted out from the Fire Sea, zipping past the Black-Horned Bear. Only two of the Black-Horned Bears, infuriated, gave chase, while the rest redirected their wrath toward the group of Fire Cloud Bats.
The Black-Horned Bear's horn glimmered with golden light as massive golden blades sliced through the Fire Cloud Bats, scattering them in an instant. These hairless creatures initially resisted by spitting fireballs, but soon realized their predicament. The fireballs that struck the Black-Horned Bear merely made a puff sound and were easily shaken off, barely more than an itch. However, each blade from the Black-Horned Bear could fell several Fire Cloud Bats.
In a short time, fewer than a hundred Fire Cloud Bats remained. With a long howl, the Fire Cloud Bat King led a retreating group of remnants. In contrast, the Fireline Toad, which thrived alongside Firebane Grass, seemed to vanish into thin air and had yet to appear on this battlefield. Somehow, it managed to slip past unnoticed by the Black-Horned Bear and pursued Xunuo closely.
Seeing that the Fireline Toad was the first to catch up, Xunuo was not surprised and unleashed a Bloodstorm Gale in response. Although the Fireline Toad was adept at evasion, it was not without vulnerabilities; during its two attempts to escape, it would always have brief moments of pause. At close enough range, Xunuo's Bloodstorm Gale could fully exploit its speed advantage and effortlessly send the Fireline Toad flying back. Each strike of Bloodstorm Gale inflicted only minor damage on the Fireline Toad, even under conditions where its defenses were significantly lowered.
However, Xunuo did not expect his spell to severely injure his opponent; he only needed to keep it at bay. The Fireline Toad was more wary of this Wind Blade Spell than it was of Xunuo's Flame Fork artifact. Though each cut from the spell left shallow wounds that were not large, they never healed completely.
At this moment, most of the wounds on the Fireline Toad had already healed; this was a testament to its formidable physicality as a beast. Most beasts heal astonishingly fast when their physical strength surpasses their injuries. Yet these few unhealable wounds continued to bleed profusely and emanated a chilling cold that seeped into its flesh.
Left with no choice, the Fireline Toad had to expend some of its mana to repel this chill. Meanwhile, Xunuo's spell was incredibly swift and sharp, making it impossible for the Fireline Toad to evade or withstand; naturally, it grew increasingly furious.
Xunuo quickly charted a viable route on his map. Finding a path without concern for returning was much simpler. All he needed to avoid were beasts with strong flying abilities or formidable offensive power; he did not need to worry about how many beasts there were.
As the Giant Flying Vessel Artifact collapsed, Mad Dog leaped onto another Flying Artifact—a delicate piece resembling a dragonfly that was swift but had poor defenses. Its owner was a burly man with a beard who pushed the artifact to its limits and was the first to burst out of the Fire Sea, vanishing in an instant. Only one flame-encased Flying Artifact managed to keep up; all others were quickly left behind.
This artifact also became the first to catch up with Xunuo's Black Iron Boat. However, they did not face Xunuo first but rather the frenzied Fireline Toad. Suddenly appearing, it unleashed a barrage of fireballs toward this Flying Artifact. The bearded man cursed loudly and urged his artifact forward with all his might; its defenses were only marginally stronger than Xunuo's Against the Wind Boat—if hit by those fireballs, escaping unscathed would be difficult indeed.
However, the Dragonfly-shaped Flying Device made a few jumps, or rather, moved as if teleporting, and leaped out of the Fire Sea. Immediately after, a giant blade over five zhang long flew out from the Dragonfly-shaped Flying Device and instantly struck the back of the Fireline Toad. The Fireline Toad let out a howl and vanished; the next moment, it appeared elsewhere with a deep gash along its spine, exposing bone. The frenzy in the Fireline Toad's eyes was replaced by profound fear, and as its body trembled, it completely disappeared.
Mad Dog, with a fierce glint in his eyes, gripped the Golden Blade that flickered with flames and coldly said, "Since he dares to seek death, I'll make sure to kill him cleanly." He pointed ahead at the Black Iron Boat and commanded, "Chase." The bearded man broke into a cold sweat and steered towards Xunuo.
Xunuo had anticipated Mad Dog's magical prowess, but witnessing his devastating blow to the Fireline Toad still left him shaken. Xunuo couldn't be certain if he could withstand such an attack, so he resolved to ensure that Mad Dog would not enter his attack range.
Xunuo's path forward would take him through two territories inhabited by low-level monsters. These two groups of beasts belonged to species that could not advance to high-level monsters; their final form was Second-Level Monsters. However, these two groups were massive, each consisting of nearly ten thousand beasts, with some possessing the ability to fly. Xunuo could see that the Flying Artifact behind them had extremely poor defenses. He believed that as long as he persisted in leading Mad Dog into any one of those monster groups ahead, he could either damage or outright destroy his Flying Artifact. Only then would Xunuo have a chance to escape to the third layer.
Xunuo slapped his storage bag and threw out dozens of attack talismans. He knew he couldn't compete with Mad Dog in spells or artifacts; even if he could match him, simply activating spells and artifacts was far beyond his reach. However, with most of his Divine Sense restored, Xunuo could control the talismans with precision. The power of talismans was unrelated to magical energy; it was activated by Divine Sense. Although Xunuo hadn't fully recovered his Divine Sense, he could manipulate hundreds of talismans at will. He could adjust the timing and location of activation based on circumstances in an instant. This was a unique skill of Xunuo as an Alchemist and Array Master that ordinary Cultivators could only envy.
When Mad Dog saw this array of talismans flying towards him, he grinned coldly. He realized that this pretty boy could kill his brother and escape from so many beasts; he must have some skills. But for him to rely on talismans to stop him felt insulting even to Mad Dog himself, especially since they were merely intermediate talismans. Without hesitation, Mad Dog hurled the flaming blade in his hand.
The giant blade lived up to expectations as it whirled around, causing countless talismans and spells to explode in the distance, revealing a thunderous Fire Sea ahead. Just as Mad Dog's mocking laughter faded away, several auxiliary spells surged from within the thunderous Fire Sea and detonated right before the dragonfly-shaped artifact almost instantaneously. The dragonfly-shaped artifact jerked chaotically under the frantic manipulation of the bearded man before finally appearing at a diagonal distance behind.
Clearly, the bearded man had pushed this artifact to its limits and activated some secret technique to achieve this feat because his face was flushed while flames erupted from above his head, yet his breath had dimmed significantly.
Mad Dog wore a similarly desperate expression as he puzzled over how Xunuo managed to evade his attacks using talismans when he heard the bearded man say, "I know who he is now."
Upon first seeing Xunuo, the bearded man felt a sense of familiarity but couldn't quite recall who this pale-faced Cultivator was. The ensuing life-and-death trial had left him no time for further contemplation. However, Xunuo's precise control over the talismans reminded him immediately of a Bounty Notice he had seen before.
The Insect Path's Bounty Notice regarding Xunuo had spread far and wide. Not only in places like Three Star City or Cloud City where Cultivators gathered but also in areas where Cultivators were rare or occasional visitors; this Bounty Notice had been issued everywhere. Now that Xunuo had distanced himself from Three Star City and arrived at this remote location without casting any transformation spells, it triggered the bearded man's memory of that Bounty Notice. Of course, this also stemmed from Xunuo's unique methods typical of Alchemists. The most prominent identifiers on that Bounty Notice were Heavenly Shadow Spike, Against the Wind Boat, and powerful Divine Sense.
Mad Dog was not interested in who this pale-faced Cultivator was; in his eyes, this pale-faced Cultivator was already dead—there was no need to know who he was. What Mad Dog considered now was how to deal with the current situation. Clearly, his Dragonfly-shaped Flying Device could not break through the array of talismans. The Mad Dog thought for a moment and then threw out a Golden Sword Artifact. He said to the Bearded Man, "Chase."
The Bearded Man felt a twinge of worry deep down, primarily about his own Flying Artifact. However, the Mad Dog's tone was icy, leaving no room for negotiation. The Bearded Man had no choice but to slap his artifact, and within a few flashes, the Dragonfly-shaped Flying Device closed in on the Black Iron Boat ahead.
Xunuo's first Talisman was laid out over a large area, intending to force the following Flying Artifact to navigate around it. To his surprise, the opponent chose to break through forcefully. Fortunately, Xunuo had prepared some countermeasures; several Talismans managed to bypass the opponent's destruction, causing them some trouble. Now seeing that the opponent had two artifacts positioned in front and behind the dragonfly-shaped device, Xunuo understood that they still intended to push through. Consequently, Xunuo adjusted his strategy. He pulled out an Attack Talisman with one hand while grabbing several Invisibility Talismans with the other, wickedly wrapping the Attack Talismans inside.
