Riding the Black Iron Boat, Xunuo found that its speed far surpassed that of the lightweight Spell. In less than a day, he sensed a significant drop in the surrounding temperature. Here, even relying solely on the Thunderproof Armored Shell was enough to repel the Fire Poison aura.
Ultimately, a battle was unavoidable. Without completely eliminating these two factions of beasts, Xunuo could not relax and refine his Yin Sha. He was currently selecting a battlefield that would be advantageous for himself. Xunuo still intended to utilize the power of the formation to deplete most of their combat strength while providing himself with the most secure defense.
Xunuo had already planned the location for the formation: the bottom of a deep ravine. This choice was made to limit the opponents' escape abilities as much as possible. In open terrain, whether it was the Fire Cloud Bat or the Fireline Toad, they could maximize their escape techniques, leaving Xunuo at a disadvantage and inevitably dragging him into a grueling war of attrition. This was not what Xunuo wanted to see.
In the narrow bottom of the ravine, they would have no choice but to engage in direct confrontation. With the assistance of the formation, Xunuo would have a clear advantage. Just before reaching his chosen location, he abruptly halted the Black Iron Boat and leaped out, frowning as he gazed ahead.
As an expert in formations, Xunuo was highly sensitive to the faint aura emanating from them. Hidden within the mountain hollow ahead was a large formation. He had traversed this path before, and this formation had undoubtedly been set up not long ago.
The placement of this formation was extremely clever. There were beasts lurking on both sides of the hollow, and with beasts pursuing from behind and this formation blocking his way ahead, Xunuo felt as if he had nowhere to turn. He quickly formed a hand seal to unleash the Wind Blade Spell, intending to reveal the opposing formation for his next move.
However, before Xunuo could act, the power of the opposing formation relaxed, and nearly twenty Eleventh Layer Grandmasters emerged. Among them were two Eleventh Layer Cultivators who had previously clashed with Xunuo at the Second Layer Entrance. Yet what caught Xunuo's attention first was a Thin Black Cultivator leading them. Clad in a Crimson Robe, he had high cheekbones on his dark face, thin lips, and small eyes that appeared devoid of pupils, entirely white. As this Cultivator stepped forward, an unmistakable killing intent radiated from him.
Xunuo's heart trembled at just one glance. The depth of this Cultivator's power was substantial; although not as profound as Mei Sanli's, it was on par with Thunderstorm's. The two sides exchanged cold glances, and the Thin Black Cultivator's gaze felt like that of a corpse, making Xunuo extremely uneasy. One of the Cultivators who had fought with Xunuo suddenly exclaimed, "Little thief, you're quite bold to gather so many helpers." The group of practitioners erupted in laughter at this remark.
Xunuo paused for a moment before turning around to see that both Fireline Toad and Fire Cloud Bat had appeared in his line of sight. Feeling cornered here already made him frustrated; hearing those words ignited his anger as he retorted sharply, "You have plenty of helpers too, but you’re still useless." With that said, he unleashed Against the Wind Boat and shot off at an angle.
Xunuo knew he couldn't afford to get entangled with them here; fleeing at top speed was his only chance for survival. The pursuers behind him were already in disarray; let them fight it out among themselves. These Cultivators believed Xunuo was merely meat on the chopping block with no chance of escape; as for the beasts trailing him, they thought their numbers and assistance from formations made them invincible.
Little did they expect how decisively Xunuo fled; by the time many practitioners clumsily summoned their magical artifacts, he had already distanced himself significantly. A few powerful Cultivators managed to launch their artifacts toward him. While unleashing Against the Wind Boat, Xunuo also activated his Blue Flame Shield behind him; though several artifacts struck against it violently, they were merely remnants of their strength and failed to reach Against the Wind Boat.
At the forefront, the Thin Black Cultivator let out a furious shout and released a massive Flying Vessel, carrying the group of cultivators as they rushed to chase after Xunuo.
Xunuo had chosen this direction, where a few Third-Grade Monsters known as Black-Horned Bears were lurking nearby. These beasts were enormous, possessing both metal and earth attributes, making their attacks and defenses extremely formidable. However, they lacked the ability to fly, and even on land, their speed was not particularly fast compared to other monsters of the same grade. Xunuo had initially avoided breaking through this area not because he feared being outrun by them, but because he knew he couldn't defeat these Black-Horned Bears.
Since Xunuo had opened this path, he would eventually have to return the same way. The safest approach was naturally to eliminate all the monsters along the route, ensuring a much safer return journey. This way, unexpected encounters would pose fewer worries. Just like this time, when he was being hunted by the Fire Cloud Bat and Fireline Toad, he managed to reach this point without leaving any traces behind.
This time, Xunuo chose to break through here by exploiting the Black-Horned Bears' inability to fly. He relied on the Against the Wind Boat's astonishing speed to quickly shake them off. The Giant Flying Vessel Artifact released by the Thin Black Cultivator was essentially an enhanced version of the Black Iron Boat; however, its enhancements were focused on carrying capacity rather than speed or defense. Thus, they could only watch as Xunuo flew further away while the Fireline Toad and Fire Cloud Bat rapidly closed in behind.
The local cultivators who had lived in the Purple Sun Fiery Valley for years understood these monsters well and had various means to deal with them. Without waiting for the Thin Black Cultivator to give orders, they unleashed a barrage of spells and artifacts at the first Fireline Toad that caught up.
The Thin Black Cultivator was the leader of the largest faction in Purple Sun Fiery Valley. His surname was Hei (Black), and others referred to him as Mad Dog. He accepted this nickname that suited his character and did not mind others calling him that; over time, his real name became forgotten. In contrast, his brother Black Skin was aptly named for his appearance and even saved on a nickname, preserving his true name instead. Both brothers were notoriously fierce individuals who had carved out a territory for themselves here and gained some renown in Purple Sun Fiery Valley.
Though Mad Dog was reckless, he held deep affection for his brother Black Skin. The two Supreme Magical Artifacts owned by Black Skin were once Mad Dog's most prized possessions. These artifacts were crafted from a complete Third-Grade Fire Python along with several precious materials; they were versatile for both offense and defense. It was believed that with these two artifacts in his possession, Black Skin would be nearly invincible in Purple Sun Fiery Valley.
However, about ten days ago, a secret method that connected their souls was interrupted, prompting Mad Dog to realize something had happened to Black Skin. He sealed off the entrance to Purple Sun Fiery Valley and began a massacre throughout Mountain Valley. True to his name, his slaughter was indiscriminate; anyone or anything he encountered—human or monster—was ruthlessly killed. With many subordinates and familiarity with the terrain, he quickly cleared out the first layer of Purple Sun Fiery Valley.
At this point, he received various reports indicating that his brother might have been killed by an outsider cultivator; at least it seemed that Black Skin's two artifacts were in this person's possession. Mad Dog then led over ten elite subordinates into the second layer of Purple Sun Fiery Valley in pursuit.
As Xunuo suspected, those two artifacts had once been blood-sacrificed by Mad Dog; although later traces of blood sacrifice were erased when given to Black Skin, a faint connection still remained. Especially when Xunuo summoned one of those artifacts, that connection became increasingly pronounced. Mad Dog lay in ambush in this hollow because he sensed the presence of the Blue Flame Shield approaching.
Mad Dog did not immediately kill Xunuo because he doubted that one person could slay both Black Skin and another Eleventh Layer Grandmaster. He suspected that Xunuo might have help or that some other force within Purple Sun Fiery Valley was involved. He wanted clarity on the situation to eradicate any threats completely.
However, before he could speak up, this white-faced cultivator suddenly vanished without a trace, driving Mad Dog into a frenzy of rage. Although Mad Dog's group had sufficient means to deal with monsters in Purple Sun Fiery Valley, they soon found themselves in trouble due to the incoming Fire Cloud Bats.
The speed of the Fire Cloud Bats could not catch up with Xunuo's Against the Wind Boat, so they vented their anger on the mad dog's Flying Vessel. Countless fireballs rained down, and the massive Flying Vessel resembled a giant target, shaking uncontrollably as it was bombarded by the fireballs.
The cultivators on the Flying Vessel knew that this type of beast was relentless. Since their Flying Vessel couldn't outrun the enemy, they shouted angrily and engaged in a counterattack against the Fire Cloud Bats. The peculiar evasion technique of the Fireline Toad allowed it to match the speed of Xunuo's Against the Wind Boat, but after being intercepted by these cultivators, it found it difficult to pursue Xunuo any longer. Treating the cultivators on the Giant Flying Vessel Artifact as allies of Xunuo, it unleashed its full power in attacking the Giant Flying Vessel Artifact. Thus, both sides of beasts surrounded the Giant Flying Vessel Artifact and fought fiercely.
In an instant, this battlefield erupted in flames and thick smoke as it chased after Xunuo. Xunuo's Against the Wind Boat was much faster than them and temporarily escaped from the chaos of battle, quickly flying into the territory of the Black-Horned Bears.
The Black-Horned Bears had long been on high alert in their territory. The intense magical fluctuations and soaring fireworks from the fierce battle around the Giant Flying Vessel Artifact had already stirred these Black-Horned Bears into action. Moreover, as this battle group rushed toward their territory, their anger intensified. They all stared at the fiery clouds and let out deafening roars.
The mad dog felt a shiver upon hearing that sound. The Black-Horned Bears were incredibly sharp in both offense and defense, despite their lack of speed. Whether it was their innate abilities or close combat, facing even one would require all-out effort from them. Charging into a group of Black-Horned Bears was practically a death wish.
However, the mad dog believed that reaching the territory of the Black-Horned Bears could very well be the end of their journey. He also doubted that this white-faced cultivator could pass through the domain of the Black-Horned Bears. As long as they could stop the white-faced cultivator, he could rush over to capture or kill him, thus ending this battle. They might not be able to outrun the Fire Cloud Bats or Fireline Toads, but escaping from the Black-Horned Bears was certainly feasible.
