The greatest function of the Chariot-shaped Artifact was likely to carry items. However, given its sturdy appearance, its defensive capabilities should be decent, but the speed at which this artifact could fly was rather disappointing. Xunuo believed that it wouldn't take half a day before he could shake it off completely. Moreover, while Xunuo could fight his way out with a single strike, if it came down to a real confrontation, he would be powerless to slay the four Cultivators, especially since two of them were equally powerful Tenth Layer Cultivators.
After chasing for less than two hours, the Chariot-shaped Artifact came to a halt. The four Cultivators stared in the direction Xunuo had fled, their faces dark enough to wring water from. One of the Tenth Layer Cultivators anxiously said, "What should we do? Letting him escape—how are we going to explain this to the boss?"
"It’s indeed hard to explain. His artifact is fast; we can use that as an excuse for not catching up. But if he breaks through us and enters the second layer, that’s going to be difficult to justify."
"If we can't explain it, then don’t. Are we supposed to sacrifice ourselves for his brother like mad dogs?"
"........"
After a moment of silence, one replied, "It’s possible."
"Absolutely."
"So... what now?"
"Lin Daoyou, your arm is already useless; there's no need to force yourself any longer. You should expel the Killing Intent quickly; otherwise, if it invades you, it will cost you your life." At that moment, a Green-Robed Practitioner spoke to the Hairpin Dual Bun Practitioner, who had remained silent throughout.
The Hairpin Dual Bun Practitioner’s expression changed repeatedly as he reluctantly said, "Let’s give it a try; losing an arm means losing several methods. Qin Daoyou knows that some of my most powerful spells require both hands to cast."
The Green-Robed Practitioner shook his head. "The two artifacts from Black Skin are made from precious materials, as you know. They were forged in fire and infused with Fire Poison. You’re not unaware of this. These artifacts inflict wounds that are extremely difficult to heal, especially considering your severed arm."
"Indeed. If you continue to divide your focus now and let the Killing Intent invade your body, I fear it will soon be too late for you."
The Hairpin Dual Bun Practitioner finally darkened his expression. With a swift motion, he grabbed his right arm with his left hand and pulled, severing his entire right arm cleanly. Strangely, neither the wound on the severed arm nor the stump at the shoulder bled; instead, the smooth edges of the wound shimmered with points of Azure Radiance. The Hairpin Dual Bun Practitioner then settled into a meditative posture in a corner of the carriage.
An Eleventh Layer Grandmaster clapped his hands against a Chariot-shaped Artifact, causing the massive magical tool to spin and fly back along their path.
The Green-Robed Practitioner’s expression eased slightly as he glanced at the Hairpin Dual Bun Practitioner and murmured, “These two artifacts were personally commissioned by Mad Dog for refinement. He knows their power better than anyone. It’s indeed unrealistic for us to withstand these two artifacts head-on, especially considering Lin Daoyou's injuries, which could serve as evidence of our desperate attempts to intercept.”
The other two practitioners nodded in silence. Only the Hairpin Dual Bun Practitioner’s face twitched a few times, growing even darker.
Xunuo felt relieved when he saw the Chariot-shaped Artifact retreating behind them. He knew that this was still the opponent's Flying Artifact, which had somewhat weaker defensive capabilities. Xunuo's Thunderproof Armored Shell and Black Iron Boat were both renowned for their strong defenses among similar artifacts. Particularly, the Thunderproof Armored Shell not only had exceptional defense but also lacked any significant weaknesses. Even so, Xunuo could clearly sense the increasingly intense heat from the Geothermal Vein on the second level of Purple Sun Fiery Valley. He believed that without artifact protection, one would be scorched to a crisp in no time.
Although the opponent had retreated to guard the exit, Xunuo did not dare let his guard down and continued to fly aimlessly on the second level. He had transcribed information from a map purchased at a Shop onto a jade slip, effectively destroying the original map. However, Xunuo still couldn’t be certain that the enemy had no means of tracking him and thus didn’t dare head directly to his destination. Instead, he made several random loops to confirm he wasn’t being followed before proceeding cautiously toward his goal.
After flying for half a day, Xunuo felt he should have shaken off any pursuers and took out his Map Jade Slip to plan his next route. Suddenly, a massive fireball shot up from below a stretch of yellow sand. The attack came unexpectedly; Xunuo’s Divine Sense hadn’t detected any presence beforehand.
With a loud crash, the Black Iron Boat tumbled through the air several times before crashing down toward the ground. The immense force left Xunuo momentarily dazed; fortunately, thanks to his double-layered defenses, he wasn’t significantly affected and quickly reacted. He first abandoned his boat and cast a floating spell, gently landing on the ground. At that moment, he saw something swiftly approaching from beneath the yellow sand, causing ripples across its surface.
When Xunuo probed with his Divine Sense, he was unable to discern what lay beneath the sand; it seemed this entity could merge itself with the sand seamlessly, prompting Xunuo not to be careless. He tapped his storage bag, summoning both his Flame Fork and Crimson Fire Whip simultaneously. The Crimson Fire Whip formed a fiery net that hovered menacingly above it while the Flame Fork struck down toward the rising sand. With a resounding clang, a three-meter-long Yellow Lizard was knocked out from beneath the sand. The fiery net created by the Crimson Fire Whip suddenly descended to ensnare it. However, just as quickly as it appeared, the lizard shook its body and vanished back into the sand without a trace. When Xunuo probed again with his Divine Sense, it was as if nothing had been there.
Seeing this situation unfold did not cause Xunuo to panic; instead, he smiled faintly and stood still. The Flame Fork and Crimson Fire Whip circled around him at a distance of over twenty feet, furiously digging into the yellow sand like plows creating deep furrows. Suddenly, there was violent shaking beneath his feet; with a sharp exclamation, Xunuo leaped into the air. Instantly, this patch of sandy ground began to churn violently. In an instant, massive vines emerged from below and dragged a Yellow Lizard out from beneath the layers of sand.
Xunuo coldly commanded, “Cut.” The Flame Fork erupted in flames and swooped down onto the Yellow Lizard's back with a fierce strike. Despite delivering what could be considered a full-powered blow from the Flame Fork, all that happened was a flash of Yellow Light on its back; there was no damage whatsoever inflicted on it. Xunuo was greatly astonished by this outcome—this strike was meant to be devastating yet failed to harm such a creature; its defensive capabilities were truly remarkable.
This piqued Xunuo’s interest in acquiring materials from this beast even more. However, he still wanted to observe its other defensive methods. With no hesitation, a Golden Sword sprang forth effortlessly from his side. Nodding slightly while gesturing with his hand, Xunuo suddenly dropped down his Crimson Fire Net to envelop the Yellow Lizard before lifting it high into the air dozens of feet above ground level. With his left hand conjuring a Thunder Ball that shot toward it, an ear-piercing shriek erupted from the lizard as it suffered a gaping wound in its ribs.
Xunuo's eyes gleamed with understanding. Although this beast was powerful, like most monsters, it lacked defenses against the Thunder Law. A twinge of regret flickered in Xunuo's heart. With the beast's defenses broken, killing it would be a piece of cake. Xunuo took the lizard's skin and claws, incinerating the remaining bones and flesh before dashing off in a specific direction.
This was a Third-Grade Monster, the Earthfire Lizard, possessing both earth and fire attributes. Its greatest ability was Earth Escape, which provided excellent defense. Xunuo recognized this creature but had never encountered one before. Slaying a Third-Grade Monster was not difficult for Xunuo; it was just that the beast's Earth Escape technique forced Xunuo to employ some tricks. However, such monsters had very strict environmental requirements, making them rare. Their skin and claws were top-quality materials for crafting Defensive Artifacts, so they were quite valuable. After this encounter, Xunuo dared not summon the Black Iron Boat for travel again.
While Xunuo could easily handle a single Third-Grade Monster, facing a group would force him to flee. Thus, he cast a Spell and continued traveling along the ground. However, without the protection of the Black Iron Boat, he finally felt the heat waves of the Purple Sun Fiery Valley's second layer.
On the surface of this second layer, flames were visible almost everywhere. Of course, these were not real flames but rather Fire Spirit Power penetrating the ground and reflecting as fiery energy. Yet among these flames, there were no pure red flames; they were either pale blue like water or swirling with Purple Flame. Clearly, both Fire Poison and Fire Spirit Power were abundant here. Already afflicted by Yin Sha, Xunuo now had to guard against Fire Poison as well, making his journey extremely arduous.
After five days of travel like this, Xunuo could no longer endure. The deeper he went, the more abundant the fire energy and Fire Poison became. His Thunderproof Armored Shell had reached its limit and could no longer withstand the invasion of denser Fire Poison. The temperature from the Earth Fire here made his Thunderproof Armored Shell glow red hot; at this point, Xunuo felt like a man on fire. He glanced at his map and summoned Bai Wuxi to check how much farther they had to go.
Bai Wuxi had previously warned Xunuo that their souls would rapidly lose power under such dual exposure to Fire Spirit Power and Fire Poison. If Xunuo wanted to harness their strength to capture Firebane Grass, he needed to minimize calling them out beforehand. Summoning Bai Wuxi was a last resort; he needed to pinpoint the exact location of Firebane Grass to devise an appropriate strategy.
As soon as Bai Wuxi appeared, he showed an expression of shock and quickly surveyed the terrain. He pointed at a massive Rift Valley on the Map Jade Slip before sinking back into the Mysterious Yin Pot and not reemerging.
Upon seeing this Rift Valley, Xunuo realized it was very close to entering the third layer's hourglass-shaped narrow waist area—more than half of the distance remained from here. This left Xunuo in a dilemma. Relying solely on his Thunderproof Armored Shell for defense would make reaching that Rift Valley impossible.
If it were merely an area rich in fire veins, Xunuo might dare to take a risk since he possessed Fire Root and could absorb some Fire Spirit Power. He could even take this opportunity to refine his True Essence Magic into pure Fire Attribute mana, suppressing his wood attribute that feared fire energy entirely. While this might significantly reduce his power when casting wood attribute Spells, it would greatly benefit his current endeavor. However, the presence of Fire Poison rendered this plan unfeasible.
Currently, Xunuo still had one Defensive Artifact on hand that could ensure his success: the newly acquired Blue Flame Shield. This Fire Attribute Defensive Artifact would definitely help him achieve his goal. However, it could also potentially reveal his location to opponents, putting Xunuo in a difficult position.
Wishing everyone a pleasant weekend! I'm busy with work...
