Two old men stood at the forefront, one of whom was an old acquaintance of Xunuo. It was the Yellow Robed Scholar, known as Elder Gu, who had once plotted against him in Qingyang City.
Beside Elder Gu was a scruffy-looking old man with a thin frame. Dressed in Taoist robes, he wore a golden Taoist crown and a purple-gold robe, holding a golden Buddhist dust whisk. His eyes, resembling inverted triangles, were fixed intently on the patch of crimson weeds in front of Xunuo.
Xunuo felt a jolt of alarm and quickly extended his Divine Sense towards the old man, only to darken his expression and furrow his brows. It turned out that this scruffy-looking Taoist had cultivated the Basic Skill Method to the sixth level.
The golden-robed Taoist stared at the weeds for a while before suddenly revealing a mouthful of uneven yellow teeth and bursting into laughter. He seemed to regard Xunuo as if he were invisible. After a moment, he finally lifted his gaze to Xunuo and, upon seeing the Purple Juniper Berry in Xunuo's box, chuckled again to himself. "Today, I came out to calculate my fortune and found some opportunities, but I never expected them to be this significant and delightful."
After finishing his speech, he laughed wildly again. Then, abruptly stopping, he said to Xunuo, "I don't know whether to say it's good luck for me or bad luck for you. But since you brought me such great fortune, I'll grant you a quick death."
His expression turned sinister as he commanded, "Hand over the wooden box."
Xunuo's face darkened as he closed the box and kicked it into his embrace. Since the situation had escalated to one of life and death, there was no need for him to plead for mercy.
Seeing that Xunuo remained unmoved, the golden-robed Taoist became furious.
Elder Gu interjected, "Gongyang Zhenren, please calm down. This kid is just asking for trouble. There's no need for you to take action; I will take care of him myself."
The golden-robed Taoist shot a sidelong glance at Elder Gu and scoffed, "If you want to go die yourself, I won't stop you."
This remark nearly choked the Yellow Robed Scholar. The Nanyue Sect had meticulously planned to eliminate Xunuo. Just before their departure, an unexpectedly powerful old Taoist had appeared. This old man had originally come to Nanyue Sect seeking several century-old medicinal herbs.
Seeing the old man's immense power, the sect leader offered him substantial benefits in exchange for assisting Elder Gu in stopping Xunuo. Throughout their journey, the golden-robed Taoist treated Elder Gu and his companions like servants. Elder Gu had long been unable to tolerate this but refrained from offending him due to his evident abilities.
Now that they had encountered Xunuo, Elder Gu naturally wanted to claim credit for defeating him and then use that as an excuse to return alone to Nanyue Sect without enduring any more of the golden-robed Taoist's arrogance. However, he never expected that one sentence from this old man would leave him spitting blood in frustration.
Having witnessed Xunuo's martial prowess before, Elder Gu was confident that he could take Xunuo's life in just a few moves. Thus, despite being insulted by Gongyang Zhenren, he still stepped forward toward Xunuo.
Xunuo believed that even without using any spells, his swordsmanship was far superior to that of the Yellow Robed Scholar. Therefore, he did not bother to look at Elder Gu and instead fixed his gaze on Goat Elder, wary of any underhanded attacks.
Elder Gu, already inflamed by Goat Elder's mockery, felt a surge of anger when he noticed that Xunuo did not regard him highly. Without hesitation, he drew his sword and charged forward from several paces away.
Xunuo remained unfazed as he faced Elder Gu. It was only when Elder Gu closed in to about ten feet that Xunuo suddenly drew his sword from behind and slashed downward with great force. Elder Gu could only see a flash of sword light before he stood there, stunned. He could almost hear Gongyang Zhenren's words echoing in his ears: "If you want to go to your death, I won't stop you."
His body came to an abrupt halt, and the next moment, he collapsed like a pile of mush in front of the crimson weeds. His entire being had been cleaved into dozens of pieces from top to bottom.
Goat Elder involuntarily took a step back upon witnessing Xunuo's astonishing sword strike. With wide eyes filled with shock, he stared at Xunuo for a moment before saying, "I didn't expect you to have mastered such mundane sword techniques to this level."
Seeing the hint of fear in Goat Elder's eyes, Xunuo thought it was a good sign. If he could make Goat Elder retreat, it would save them both from further conflict. Thus, Xunuo sheathed Azure Edge and said, "There is no enmity between us; why bother making an enemy over some mortals? We are both part of the Great Liang Kingdom's cultivation world; our paths will inevitably cross again. Besides, it's better to resolve enmities than to create them..."
Goat Elder pondered for a moment before chuckling darkly. "Don't try to deceive me with your words. To be honest, I am not cultivating within the Great Liang Kingdom and have no ties with you at all. However, if you are willing to hand over those Purple Juniper Berries, I might let you go."
Xunuo pointed at the crimson weeds in front of him and smiled slightly. "Is this what you referred to as Blazing Sun Grass?"
Upon hearing this, Goat Elder's expression changed drastically. He exclaimed sharply, "It seems you don't want to seize this opportunity for survival. Do you think your mere five-layer cultivation method qualifies you to challenge me?"
Xunuo did not respond but raised one hand instead. A ball of flame ignited in his palm; with a quick gesture, it transformed into a fire arrow that shot toward an empty space beside him.
In an instant, there was a loud explosion in that area. A palm-sized talisman appeared out of nowhere and ignited spontaneously without wind, turning to ashes in the blink of an eye.
Xunuo coldly remarked, "If you truly wish to turn hostility into friendship, I might be willing to make some concessions; it's just a pity that your ambitions are too great."
Seeing that his sneak attack had failed and he had wasted a talisman in vain, Goat Elder felt a pang of regret and said, "Since you are so eager for death, I shall grant it to you—but it won't be quick; I will ensure you suffer greatly before your end."
With that, he raised his hand and unleashed a barrage of Water Swords aimed at Xunuo.
This was Xunuo's first time engaging in a battle of spells. He only had the Fire Manipulation Technique at his disposal, which was suitable given the natural counterbalance between water and fire. Thus, he raised his hand again and sent forth a volley of fire arrows to meet the incoming Water Swords. As the two forces collided with a crackling sound, mist rose up around them. Although the fire arrows neutralized most of the Water Swords, several still surged toward him relentlessly.
Xunuo did not evade; instead, he drew his sword to meet the incoming Water Sword, charging forward with a swing. Just as Xunuo moved away, a shower of ice spikes fell from the sky, densely raining down on the spot where he had just stood.
Xunuo narrowly avoided this disaster, but it was not mere luck. After launching his fire arrow, he sensed that Goat Elder had cast another Spell, descending from above. Having dodged two surprise attacks in quick succession was entirely due to Xunuo's superior Divine Sense compared to his opponent.
In fact, Xunuo had realized this as soon as he made contact with Goat Elder. Logically speaking, his Cultivation Method was a level lower than Goat Elder's, making it impossible for him to gauge the other's cultivation level. However, upon probing, Xunuo discovered that Goat Elder was at the sixth layer of Basic Skill Method. This indicated that although he was inferior in magical power, his Divine Sense was significantly stronger. Being superior in Divine Sense meant that Goat Elder's sneak attacks were essentially laid bare before him.
The reason Xunuo charged toward the Water Sword was out of necessity. Blocking a Spell with mundane sword techniques was akin to a mantis trying to stop a chariot. With the Xunuo technique, he managed to sever one lethal Water Sword but still got pierced in the left arm by another water arrow.
Seeing that he had only injured Xunuo and not killed him, Goat Elder grew anxious. He quickly formed a hand seal and began chanting another incantation. Halfway through the chant, he noticed that after breaking through the Water Sword, Xunuo was still advancing toward him without pause.
Goat Elder hastily switched to a different incantation. In the next moment, a bright light enveloped him, forming a blue shield around him. At the same time, Xunuo's Azure Wind Sword flashed and struck against Goat Elder's shield. A clanging sound echoed as the blue Blue Shield trembled momentarily but remained unbroken.
Xunuo continued to slash with his Iron Sword, delivering several strikes against the blue Blue Shield. Although the shield's vibrations grew larger, it still failed to harm Goat Elder within it. Inside the blue Blue Shield, Goat Elder recited his incantation, preparing to unleash a Spell.
Realizing that he could not break through the shield in a short time and acknowledging that he was no match for Goat Elder in terms of magical power after being injured in their first exchange, Xunuo decided against lingering in battle. He sheathed his sword and turned to flee.
Goat Elder had intended to use his most adept Spell to kill Xunuo. This Spell was immensely powerful but required some time to activate. Just as he finished chanting and was about to cast it, he saw his opponent turning to run away. By the time Goat Elder retracted his spell and lowered his protective Blue Shield, Xunuo had already crossed the pond and was far away.
Goat Elder did not expect Xunuo to be so cunning; he would not let this cooked duck fly away. He ordered those following him to guard against any escape routes while pursuing Xunuo in the direction he fled towards Blazing Sun Grass.
